Modern Militia Movement
The modern militia movement took off in the mid-1990s, with the first large militias appearing in 1994 and growth continuing over the next several years. The movement reflected widespread anger over what was seen as the meddling of a relatively liberal administration in Washington—from gun control to environmental laws to a variety of other federal mandates. But what really ignited the movement was the bloodshed in Ruby Ridge, Idaho, and Waco, Texas. In 1992, during a standoff between white supremacist Randy Weaver's family in Idaho and federal agents—a confrontation that began with Weaver's sale of an illegal weapon—Weaver's son and wife were killed, along with a U.S. marshal. The following year, some 80 members of the gun-loving Branch Davidian …show more content…
With more than 200 active anti-government militia groups. White supremacist movements, though not experiencing the same increase in size, have demonstrated greatly increased levels of agitation, including calls for violence.
Over the past year, right-wing extremists made headlines through violent acts and plots, including a fatal shooting at the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C., the deadly ambush of three police officers in Pittsburgh, and the gunning down of a physician in his own church in Kansas, among others. The arrest of nine members of the anti-government Hutaree Militia, accused of a plot to kill law enforcement officers and their families to create a confrontation with the government that would spark a broader uprising, was just the most recent example of an extremist militia group making

And the fact that the president is Obama who is african american it has injected a strong racial element into even those parts of the radical right, like the militias, that in the past were not primarily motivated by race hate. Contributing to the racial animus have been fears on the far right about the consequences of Latino immigration. Militia rhetoric is being heard widely once more, often from a second generation of ideologues, and conspiracy theories are being energetically revived or invented anew. "Paper terrorism"—the use of property liens, bogus legal documents and "citizen's' grand juries" to attack enemies and, sometimes, reap illegal fortunes—is again proliferating, to the point where the government has set up special efforts to rein in so-called "tax defiers" and to track threats against judges. What's more, patriot fears about the government are being amplified by a loud new group of ostensibly mainstream media commentators and

Perhaps one of the most famous counter protests happened after the September 11 attacks. One young man Jared Dailey , stood across from the group and held a sign that displayed, “NOT today Fred.” Two days later the number shifted from 1 to 86 people standing across from the group. In future protest against the group the slogan that began Dailey used has been popular in use. As a means to counter the Westboro Baptist church organizations such as, The Boston Center for the Arts and an ad-hoc group in Richmond countered the protest by doing pledges and then donating the money to LGBT (Lesbian, Bisexual, and Trans-gender) organizational projects. Others have arranged protest and hackers have been known to hack the Westboro batiste Church websites and disable them from the internet. There have been violent actions also against the group. The lives of many were to change on the day of April 20th, 1999, at Columbine High School. With the death of twelve students and one teacher, it was to be the deadliest mass murder committed on an American high school campus. The massacre, committed by senior students Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, sparked debate over gun control laws; whether the availability of guns across the United States, especially to young people such as these, was socially acceptable. This event is what sparked Moore to create his documentary, ‘Bowling for Columbine’.…

and 12:08 p.m. a mass school shooting occurred at Columbine High School in Columbine, Colorado. The type of attack was a school shooting, mass murder, murder-suicide, arson, and attempted bombing. On that day there were a total of 15 deaths including both Eric Harris and Dylan Kalgold, the perpetrators. They had various motives including: bullying, personal stress, terrorism, and a video game reenactment. That is crazy right? What kind of person would use actual human beings to reenact a video game? This massacre sparked a huge debate over gun control laws. Secret Service researchers found to believe that Zero- tolerance policies and metal detectors are unlikely to be useful during these moments of attack. In a split second something can happen. Most attackers usually had access to and had used weapons prior to the attack. School shootings are a partial percentage of the death rates that rise every single…

As of today there are 784 hate groups operating in the United States of America, yet this is only including the groups and their chapters that are known. These groups are known to participate in criminal acts, rallies, marches, speeches, meetings, leafleting or publishing. In our very own home town the group known as the KKK is extremely active and well known. North Carolina’s specific chapter is known as the Loyal White Knights. They believe themselves not to be a hate group, but a worker of their God. They claim to hate the actions of the group such as race-mixing, drugs, homosexuality and abortion, but not the specific group itself. Their claim is based off of biblical scripture (Lev.20:24-25) that whites and darker races are to live separately “as God intended.” In their website they say “ this government will continue to pass Anti-White laws, such as the Hate Crime…

Bodies lay motionless under a collapsing infrastructure; planes are taken under siege by a villainous force; bullets wound bystanders and officers attempting to ensure safety. The thought that all illegal immigrants enter the country in search of a better life is deceiving. Among the many faultless immigrants hide those who wish only harm due to radical beliefs. Illegal immigration gives people a chance for a new life, it enlarges the population of incarcerated immigrants, and its potential to introduce terrorists signifies that the United States must increase border security. Illegal immigration into the United States has the potential to introduce terrorists to the population and reduces national…

The major events, which helped to incite the movement, include the Ruby Ridge and Waco standoffs, the Brady Law and the Assault Weapons Manufacture Ban. The first groups began forming at the end of 1993; by mid-1994 (Sonder, 2000) there were a variety of such groups in many states across the country. While the media noted the emergence of this movement, little attention was paid to the phenomenon until late 1994, when civil rights organizations such as the Southern Poverty Law Center and the Anti-Defamation League released reports on the militia movement. According to the Southern Poverty Law Center most of these citizens' armies have few members and are not involved in violent activities (Sonder, 2000). They are interested mostly in the purchase and use of firearms, in discussions of patriotism, and in playing weekend war games. However, there are more than a hundred of these groups, which probably have ties to…
