Summary: In Don Thompson’s article entitled “5 Dead, Including Gunman, in Series of North California Shootings” which was published November 14, 2017, it begins with the author defining the unfortunate occurrences of the multiple victims involved in a shooting in Red Bluff, California. It is clarified that the suspected shooter has been shooting “... Hundreds of rounds, large magazines,” a witness reported. Oddly enough, the shooter had also been reported for a domestic violence incident that most of his neighbors were “aware” about. Though the devastating occurrence was one that changed the lives of many Red Bluff citizens, there remains information that is still unknown to the public eye. As Thompson opens his article, he begins to summarize…

The book American Sniper is written by Chris Kyle that is a captivating, thrilling, and very dramatic autobiography that follows his life as he turns from a bustin’ broncos cowboy into the deadliest sniper in U.S. history with over 160 confirmed kills. Chris was born in Odessa, Texas on April 8, 1984 and was truly the definition of a patriot. He loved the country he grew up in and that motivated him to enlist as a Navy Seal in 1999. When reading his book it was brought to my attention just how much soldier's sacrifice when going off to war. The stakes really are higher than just their individual life, for almost all of them have people who are relying on them back home, because not only is their duty to their country but also to their families.…

Just after school began on a Friday morning in Sandy Hook, Connecticut, Adam Lanza opened fire in the main office of Sandy Hook Elementary. What followed was the mass murder of 20 students and 6 staff members (Stroller, Strauss & Stanglin, 2012). A mass murder is defined as “single episodic act of violence, occurring at one time and in one place…where three or more people are killed with no cooling off period between killings” (Kitaeff, 2011, p. 81-82). Investigators estimate that from the time Lanza began shooting until he turned the gun on himself was less than five minutes. Lanza, 20 years old, then turned the gun on himself, he was found dead inside the school. In all, he fired from three weapons, Glock and Sig Sauer pistols as well as an AR-15, military style rifle. Police reported that Lanza first shot his mother in the forehead then drove her car to the school and began firing (Stroller et al, 2012).…

According to Moore, the shooting was effectively due to the media’s victimization of black males. Because of the victimization of black males, the media dramatically sparked fear into the American public, causing people to purchase guns for their safety. In this case, the media inhumanely singled out a group of people and exploited them for their best interests. This victimization is best described by Barry Glassner in a conversation with Moore when he says “If you turn on the TV, look at the news, what are you going to hear about? Dangerous black guys, right? Unnamed black guy who is accused of some crime. You’re going to see black guys doing bad things, or hear stories about black guys doing bad things. And we’ve heard this our whole lives” (Moore 2002). Interestingly, Glassner chose to use the word ‘unnamed’ in the context of a black male being accused of a crime. This implies that he believes the media is forging incidents to fill a political agenda. The political agenda, in this case, is helping the corporation Lockheed Martin gain support in their pro-gun campaign. Therefore, the people running the media are not humane because they don’t have sympathy for others; they victimize a group of people to fulfill their political…

Recently, an interesting and heated controversy about the regulation of semi-automatic firearms has been taking place in the United States of America. This controversy has arisen because of recent tragedies that have occurred throughout the country. A couple of these tragedies include the mass shooting in a movie theatre in Aurora, Colorado, and the mass killing of twenty children and six faculty members at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut. Two other recent events that have sparked the controversy were the shooting in Tucson, Arizona where Congresswoman Gabriel Giffords was shot and at Virginia Tech University where thirty-two people were killed and seventeen were injured. In all of these events, semi-automatic weapons were used by the shooters. In a video with Officer Leroy Pyle of the San Jose Police Department, Pyle explains the difference between fully automatic and semi-automatic firearms. The main difference is that automatic firearms will continuously fire rounds with one pull of the trigger while a semi-automatic firearm will only fire one round for each pull of the trigger. This is the same or similar technology that is present in many hunting rifles and shotguns (Pyle).…

On an unseasonably cold March morning in 1993, high school sophomore Edward Gillom exited his first period classroom and made his way through the crowded hallways of Harlem High School. After engaging in a heated argument, allegedly over a girl, with Ronricas “Pony” Gibson and Ricoh Lee, Gillom pulled out a .38-caliber gun and opened fire. Gillom’s shots fatally wounded Gibson and left Lee with a non-fatal gunshot wound to the neck (Washington Ceasefire, 2011 pg 1). The shooting in Harlem, Georgia sparked national attention as one of the first high school shootings and added to the alarmingly high rates of gun violence by adolescents during the 1990s. According to the Virginia Youth Violence Project, forty-two homicides took place in American schools in 1993 (2009 pg/par). While the rate of gun violence in American schools has decreased substantially since the early 1990s, the death rate for adolescents due to firearms in the United States is still higher than in any other industrialized nation (Vittes, Sorenson, &ump; Gilbert, 2003 pg/par). The current generation of American teenagers has grown up surrounded by gun violence: in the news; in their video games; and in the television programs they watch. In the last twenty years, the United States has seen an upsurge of gun related crimes among adolescents; as a result, political leaders and their constituents have become outraged at how accessible the nation’s gun laws make firearms to children and the mentally unstable to obtain, especially considering the dramatic decrease of gun control, which will inevitably lead to increased gun crimes involving teenagers and young adults.…
