Miss Strangeworth Character Analysis
Roses are beautiful and full of perfume, but the thorn may hurt you. Similarly, it is the same in life. There are many people who don’t look like what they seem. Miss Adela Strangeworth, a character in a story “The Possibility of Evil” by Shirley Jackson, is a seventy-one-year old woman who wants to stop the evil from her town. However, her efforts made her become a condescending perfectionist with a god complex.
Miss Strangeworth shows condescension throughout the whole story. She always thought “the town belonged to her” because “[her] grandfather built the first house on Pleasant Street” (Jackson, 1941, p. 163). She liked to sleep in the afternoon, knowing no doorbell or phone would ring, because “no one in the town would dare to disturb

Her house was so clean that “even the stones of the front walk were swept and clear” that” there is a legend about tourist once mistaking it for the local museum” (Jackson, 1941, p. 168). Her perfectionism not only displayed in her house but also her appearance. When she went out, she would always “[take] up her hat---Miss Strangeworth’s hat were proverbial in the town” (Jackson, 1941, p. 172).Such a perfectionist cheated almost everyone in the town.
It is complex of her to appear to be kind but rebarbative actually. At first, she seemed like very polite and considerate. “She had to stop every minute or so to say good morning to someone” as well as “ask after someone’s health”. (Jackson, 1941, p. 165).Actually, she always wrote letters in sneaky words to stop the evil from her town and “never signed up her name” (Jackson, 1941, p. 163).She thought it could stop the evil but it disturbed other people’s lives.
Miss Strangeworth is the perfectionist but sneaky person that is very different between appearance and reality. It looks like the roses that are not as perfect as we think. Likewise, someone’s appearance may cheat you thus only what he or she did can help you know he or

Mr. Peters describes her disposition as “unconcerned”, reverting the reader to seeing Mrs. Wright as the antagonist and her late husband as the protagonist. This idea that Mrs. Wright is a villain, establishes boundaries between who is the hero and villain. This places the reader on the side of the woman. This shifts considerably as the plot thickens. While in the home, the men begin to comment on the display of the kitchen- complaining of its filth, and labeling Mrs. Wright as a bad housewife. The women quickly come to her defensive, but are shut down as worrying about trivial things. Mr. Peters even exclaims, “well, can you beat the women! Held for murder and worrying about her preserves!” (4). At this point in the plot, I got the sense that the men hold a great deal of power over the affairs of the women, and that they have little respect for their duties. Although it bothered me that the men made a mockery of the women, I still saw Mrs. Wright as the villain of the story. Flashing forward a couple scenes: the men now have exited the kitchen, leaving Mrs. Peters and Mrs. Hale alone to gather some supplies for an incarcerated Minnie. They discuss her as a child as well as who she is currently, both having positive remarks for who she is.…

She didn’t care, she thought it was her job to look after the people of this town. To demonstrate, while Miss Strangeworth was at the post office, delivering the letters, Linda Stewart came towards her crying saying, “I can’t tell you, I just can’t, it’s just nasty.” Miss Strangeworth obviously did something cruel, Linda just won’t tell her. Miss Strangeworth turned away and went to mail her letters. As she slid her letters into the slot two of them went in, and one of them fell outside onto the ground. She didn’t notice that she dropped one. Furthermore the next morning after Miss Strangeworth woke up she saw a green envelope lying on her floor. Miss Strangeworth opened the envelope. She began to cry silently for the wickedness of the world when she read the words: “Look out at what used to be your roses.” Clearly Miss Strangeworth’s cruel character came back to haunt her that morning. Jane Austen's detail allows the reader to see another apparent character trait in Miss Bates, her lack of intelligence. Miss Bates has "no intellectual superiority" and "never boasted beauty of cleverness." Perhaps her lack of intellect is the reason a few people of Highbury were annoyed by Miss Bates. She did have some wisdom, though. Miss Bates was not totally ignorant. Indeed, there is much practical wisdom, genuine concern, and touching kindness peppered throughout her humble flow of eager-to-please manner. She had trouble recognizing when she was doing or saying something wrong. On the other hand, Miss Bates is a "great talker upon little…
