Michael Guillen's Five Equations That Changed The World
The tip that I appreciate the most in Larry Miller’s (2010) “12 Tips for New Teachers” states “Whenever possible, connect your classroom discussions and curriculum to students’ lives, community, and culture” (p.40). Looking back, the classes in which I truly feel like I learned and enjoyed myself had teachers who connected what we were learning to aspects of our personal lives. An absolutely perfect example is the book that I am reading for a STEM course this semester. While the thought of math and science is typically daunting for me, along with countless others, Michael Guillen’s (1995) Five Equations that Changed the World: The Power and Poetry of Mathematics is undoing the years of confusion and hatred towards those two subjects.
