Love, it is a rather common word in today’s society. The basic noun definition is an intense feeling of deep affection, while the verb definition is to feel a deep romantic or sexual attachment to (someone). Seems simple enough correct? Not exactly, although in the modern world language, love is used regularly to express ones feelings, it is often misused. In order to use a word correctly, it must be understood, remembering that love is in the eye of the beholder. To understand a word, it should first be realized that, the meaning of a word changes over the decades, and along with it, the context it is used in. So where did the word love originate from? The word currently used in the English language originated from the Old English word lufu, which has Old Germanic and Indo-European roots shared by Sanskrit lubhyati, ‘desires,’ Latin, libet, ‘it is pleasing,’ or libido, ‘desire.’ Although these all point toward a romantic meaning behind love; that is not wholly accurate either, due to the English language’s tendency to have more than one definition or context one can use the word in. There are many different types of ‘love’ that a person can express.
In the Greek language, there are four different words for showing affection to an individual. Agápē is the most commonly used Greek word, which literally translates to ‘brotherly love,’ ‘love of god for a man of god,’ or ‘to will the good of another.’ The other three are érōs, philía, storgē, all have different meanings that people today, use with just one word. Eros is ‘love, mostly of the sexual passion,’ philia, ‘affectionate regard of friendship, mostly among equals,’ and storge, ‘love, affection;’ these are all correct definitions and ways to express love, and all of them are very different, some, not romantic at all, while others strictly relating to
