Mathew 7: 21-23
Matthew 7:21-23
The Message (MSG)
21-23 “Knowing the correct password—saying ‘Master, Master,’ for instance—isn’t going to get you anywhere with me. What is required is serious obedience—doing what my Father wills. I can see it now—at the Final Judgment thousands strutting up to me and saying, ‘Master, we preached the Message, we bashed the demons, our God-sponsored projects had everyone talking.’ And do you know what I am going to say? ‘You missed the boat. All you did was use me to make yourselves important. You don’t impress me one bit. You’re out of here.’
Matthew 7:21-23
New King James Version (NKJV)
I Never Knew You
21 “Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven. 22 Many will say to Me in that day, ‘Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Your name, cast out demons in Your name, and done many wonders in Your name?’ 23 And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness!’

Commentary
21: Not--but (ou--all). Sharp contrast between the mere talker and the doer of God's will.
22: Did we not prophesy in thy name? (ou twi swi onomati eprophteusamen;). The use of ou in the question expects the affirmative answer. They claim to have prophesied (preached) in Christ's name and to have done many miracles. But Jesus will tear off the sheepskin and lay bare the ravening wolf. "I never knew you" (oudepote egnwn ma). "I was never acquainted with you" (experimental knowledge). Success, as the world counts it, is not a criterion of one's knowledge of Christ and relation to him. "I will profess unto them" (omologhsw autoi), the very word used of profession of Christ before men ( Matthew 10:32 ). This word Jesus will use for public and open announcement of their doom.

But they will never follow a stranger; in fact, they will run away from him because they do not recognize a stranger’s voice’. Jesus used this figure of speech, but they did not understand what he was telling them.”…

It is interesting that Paul uses the phrase “although they knew Him, they did not glorify him as God,” (NKJV, Rom.1:21). This phrase speaks to his disbelief that anyone who knew God could be so “futile and foolish” and in verse 22 he states that these people were “professing to be wise, they became fools” (NKJV, Rom.1:22). Today, the worldview of the word…

“Ask”. The intent is to show that through the passages of Matthew 7:7 and Luke 9:9 that God is willing to provide for his faction everything one could desire on earth. All his followers have to do is to ‘Ask’ of Him (God). 7 “Ask, and it will be given to you; search, and you will find; knock, and the door will be opened for you” (Mark 7:7).…

When we pray as Christ taught us we find ourselves saying, “Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.” When the will of God is obeyed, the kingdom, the reign of God is made present. It is easier to say this than it is to enact it. Every time I sin I put the kingdom of God away from me: but God’s will cannot be thwarted. It is up to me to remain within God’s kingdom, for if the gates close while I am without I will find myself in the eternal darkness where there is wailing and gnashing of teeth. And as Christ warns us, “But of that day and hour no one knows.” (Mt…

Walter Kaiser warns against using the New Testament to reinterpret passages of the Old Testament while discounting the meaning of the original author. Kaiser states that the meaning established by the original author is important and to ignore it “is to make nonsense out of the revelation…” He does acknowledge, however, that while the author may not have a sense of writing prophetically, the Holy Spirit promulgates the underlying theme of the “Promise”. This approach provides a basic framework with which this passage may be viewed.…

The first three chapters are dedicated to demonstrate the need for a new theology. In chapter one, he throws down the gauntlet in front of the so-called dead and ineffective systems of theology that have been followed traditionally (1). His appeal specifically revolves around the college men and women of his day. He argues that “if our theology is silent on social salvation, we compel college men and women, working men and theological students to choose between an unsocial system of theology and an irreligious system of social salvation” (7). In chapter two, he discusses the challenges that arise in changing systems of theology. He calls theology “esoteric” and argues that the gospel was given by and to laymen (15).…

Against such there is no law” (p.674). This verse speaks of how true character is developed through the situations that people face. Actions almost always speak louder than the words people speak. When actions are not proper, good, or following in the manner that true character would deem appropriate, then the devil is at work and people must fight this if they are to show Jesus and his ways to the…

“Most official religious leaders of the Jews… were blinded by sin and could not discern light. Centuries of distorted teaching had prejudiced their thinking that they could not recognize the true Messiah.” (Hester, 1963, p. 155). They expected a Messiah with riches, and not this common humble man. They did not like his choice of disciples who were also “humble, working men – fishermen, farmers, and even a publican who was hated. He did not practice or teach his followers to practice many established observances so dear to the Pharisees – such as fasts, washing hands before meals, and so on” (Hester, 1963, p. 154).…
