Marketing Is an Art or Science?
Marketing is an art and science
Before making any argument about this I would like to share my own view point
MARKETING IS AN ART:
Yes it’s quite true that marketing is an art, or we can call it beauty of innovation, creativity and imagination. Marketing is a world where “dreams become realty”. Marketing is also an art because it involves non-verbal ways of communication processes that involve delicate and hidden messages for specific audience. I am calling marketing an art because it creates conscious and unconscious connections between consumer and advertising. To make my point clear I would like to give an example of DALDA, in the Dalda oil ad they use a tag line “JAHAN MAMTA WAHAN DALDA” what basically they try to do they just try to create a bond between DALDA and TRUST of mother. With the art of marketing they directly address their ultimate consumers because in any family women makes the decisions of food items. That result in conscious and unconscious emotional tie developed between consumer and product (brand). But the pieces of art can convey a range of meaning so it also depends on how it is received. So we can say marketing can be a (unique) experience but depending on the reaction of individual towards it. To enhance the feelings of individuals towards a product companies used many colors and these colors are also used to convey message in a much artistic way. For example if we examine the logo of COCA-COLA what they convey? When we think about the red color what is the first thing springs to mind love and power. That’s why the coca-cola selects this color for its logo because brightness and spark in colors brings attraction and elevate a product. So we can say “marketing is an art”.

MARKETING IS A SCIENCE: After reading my points under art we assume that marketing is all about Art, but no it’s not. Marketing is a science because it’s all about satisfying the consumers. For this purpose companies use scientific models, scientific formulas and

I will admit that when I hear the term Marketing the first thing that comes to mind is advertising. I know there is more to marketing but this is the first thought, and I think this is common. However, while marketing is advertising it is much more than just that. Our course materials states that marketing is the performance of activities that seek to accomplish and organization's objectives by anticipating customer needs and directing a flow of need-satisfying goods and services from producer to the customer. I am quickly learning that marketing has two parts; the one part is where a company that produces a certain good or service that is more of a want than a need meets customers expectations and wants. Then there is marketing for the needs in life, the goods and services that keep our lives going on a daily basis.…

As a personal definition, marketing is a strategy to promote consumer awareness and positive feelings towards a brand or product in order to encourage the consumer to purchase or use that product. In more specific terms, the American Marketing Association (2012) defines marketing as “the activity, set of institutions, and processes for creating, communicating, delivering, and exchanging offerings that have value for customers, clients, partners, and society at large.” A simpler definition of marketing, as identified by the U.S. Small Business Administration (2012), are the activities and strategies that result in making products available that satisfy customers while making profits for the companies that offer those products. The key factor that all three definitions have in common is that the overall purpose of marketing is to appeal to consumers by showing them how a product or service can meet their needs and to influence them to purchase that product or service. A successful marketing strategy can catch a consumer’s attention and make the product or service stand out in a crowd of competitors who offer similar products.…

Art With A Strategy Jef I. Richards states, “Creative without strategy is called ‘art.’ Creative with strategy is called ‘advertising.’” I believe Jef is right, each advertisement is a creation with strategy to best capture the attention of potential consumers to sell their product. Marketing can be defined as ‘the activity, set of institutions and processes for creating, communicating, delivering and exchanging offerings that have value for customers, clients, partners and society at large’ (American Marketing Association, 2007). From this definition it can be seen that marketing is the process by which an organisation communicates with customers to promote, create a sense of value and ultimately sell their concept or product (Gamble, Gilmore, McCartnan-Quinn and Durkan, 2011). As previously stated marketing is not a singular function but a process. This process consists of a four basic elements; identifying a want or need within a market; creating a strategy to market a product to fulfil this need; delivering and communicating value to the customer; and the retaining of customers through the maintenance of this perceived value (Kotler, Brown, Burton, Deans and Armstrong, 2010, pg. 6).…
