When I started this class 9 weeks ago I did not know much about the different types of diversity that we have in the United States. Since people can be identified by several different things it is important for you to know the different things that is considered part of their identity. On page 62 of SDL by Damon A. Williams’s book, he asserted that ‘it is vital that academic institutions engaged diversity issues in their curricular and curricular activities.’ Like Damon I understand that the growing diverse society that we are currently living in required everyone to be knowledgeable of diversity. This means that cultural competency education should be implemented in postsecondary curriculum. Indeed, it is ironic to believe that children and adolescents whom went to school with students that most likely look like them would be able to quickly cope with a postsecondary diverse curriculum. Nevertheless, it seems that, colleges are the best place to create a curriculum where student learn to be cultural competent.…

The information I learned about diversity may not fit into the intended point of the class. Thinking back as far as I can remember the way I related to others was and still is decided on the way the mutual consideration for respect for whatever the purpose for the need to relate. At a point in my life I would have had no problem saying ‘’I Steven Hodges am proud to have a divers mindset in regard to being open to everything, and everyone imaginable under the sun’’. It is unfortunate that the word diversity seems to have been tainted and used like a tool to cloud and impede the accomplishments made, or at least started by people like Martin Luther King JR. The information I have gathered about diversity in the US is that so many people are too worried about other people and how diverse they are; but they them self-need to ask themselves how divers they truly are. I feel that too many people have a sense of entitlement and these same people freely point out the differences of other people who may not share the same opinion as them. Yet if they are so divers why can they not accept that people are different and we all do not have to think and feel the way the next person does.…

During this course I have learned about diversity, race, ethnicity, cultural differences, stereotyping and prejudice. Much of the textbook reading has enlightened me on the immense diversity in the United States and in the world at large. The decisions that I partook in during this course have allowed me to interact with many diverse people from various backgrounds which is much like the way the United States and society is in general work. I really never thought about diversity in the way that was taught in this course; people come from many backgrounds and have rich and full cultures who live right here in my own community. Now that I see these cultures in a different light due to this course I can enjoy them more and not feel like they are so different from me and when they are different I can embrace those differences.…

I would have to say that I have learned a lot of information by taking this cultural diversity class. I know that there are minorities in the United States, but I was unaware of many of the discriminations that have happened over the years. I have always thought that we were all equal and that is how I have raised my children. We may come from different backgrounds, have different colors of skin and speak other languages, but we are all people living our lives and trying to become successful. I can now see the challenges that many minority groups have to face in the United States and understand why there are so many different programs available to the minority.…

I think that diversity is incredibly important, especially in the case of education; it allows others to work with those who have a different background than their own, through which they may learn something they could not learn from school. As a nurse, diversity is even more important, because you will be caring for a diverse population in your patients, thus, you must be sensitive to their needs and background in order to be successful. I contribute diversity to the class because of the way I was raised. I am open minded and accepting of everyone because, as I child I lived on three different continents. This allowed me to interact with those who had different beliefs and came from cultures aside from my own. This upbringing led me to develop a strong desire to learn more about other people, cultures, and their traditions or beliefs. For instance, when I had a class with an exchange student from Cambodia, I was intrigued by his life, and was thrilled to learn more about about his life and experience in Cambodia, as well as his new experiences in America. My upbringing has taught me that even though someone may have different beliefs than myself, I should still respect them and their…
