Man Appointed Leadership
Paula Coffman Leadership Professor Smith: Oct. 25, 2012
Man Appointed Leadership Children often ask their parents: “Everyone else is allowed to do this, why can’t I ?”And parents usually reply: “ Well, if everyone else jumped off a cliff would you want to as well?” Sadly, most children desire to be like their peers, regardless of the con-sequences. The children of Israel proved to be no different than most modern day children, in their desire to imitate their pagan neighbors. For 400 years, after the death of Joshua and Caleb the Israelites had been in a cycle of rebellion against God. They would follow God for a season, and then drift into pagan worship. God would then allow them to be overtaken and severely oppressed by their neighbors. In their distress, they would cry out to God and He would send judges, political and military figures, to rule and rescue them. Gideon was an example of such a judge. The people had done evil in God’s sight and he gave them over to the hands of the Midianites. ( see Judges 6:1) Gideon was hiding from the Midianites, threshing grain in a wine press when the angel of the Lord appeared to him with a commission: “The angel of the Lord came and sat down under the oak in Ophrah that belonged to Joash the Abiezrite , where his son Gideon was threshing wheat in a winepress to keep it from the Midianites.”Judges 6:11 (NIV) “When the angel of the Lord appeared to Gideon, he said, ‘The Lord is with you, mighty warrior.’ “ But sir, Gideon replied, “if the Lord is with us, why has all this happened to us? Where are all his wonders that our fathers told us about when they said: ‘Did not the Lord bring us up out of Egypt?’ ” “But now the Lord has abandoned us into the hand of Midian.” Judges 6:12-13. (NIV) Gideon highlighted his weaknesses, and told the Angel that he was from the smallest tribe of Israel, and the least member of his family. However, Gideon eventually accepted his commission and lead Israel to defeat their

During the time of Samuel, Judges ruled the people in Israel. The Israelites said to Samuel, “ You are old, and your sons do not follow your ways; now appoint a king to lead us, such as all the other nations have.” (APA, NIV, 1 Samuel 8:5) They desire a king because they thought the other nations having a man, as a leader will help them win their fight battles. Having a king would allow them to be lazy, and have someone else make all the calls and take on the burden of responsibilities they would have to deal with. The Israelites did not trust God’s judgment after the countless times he has provided for them. They wanted to be just like the other nations not knowing what God had in store for them. God being a favorable God give them what they wanted.…

Throughout the history of Israel we can see the hand of God intervening in shaping of a nation which was chosen to carry out God’s will. All the events, whether it was Egypt’s frustration in trying to prevent the Hebrew people from leaving the land to worship their God, or Canaan’s surrender to Joshua are seen in history as divine intervention from God. “In other words, human politics could succeed only to the extent that they accorded with God’s will.”(Old Testament Survey pg.423).…

God placed authorities over our lives to test us on how we respond and honor those authorities. All authorities are ordained by God. Romans 13:1-2 states that every soul is subject to the governing authorities and that God has appointed all authorities regardless of their past roles and experience. John Bevere writes that “When we oppose God’s delegated authority, we oppose God Himself (Under Cover, Chapter 8)!” Prior to this course, I have encountered many authorities where I have questioned their leadership ability. Although I didn’t realize it at the time, my questioning was a form of disobedience towards God. Since then, my view on authority has completely changed. I now know that God places each authority in our lives for a reason. One primary reason is to test the motives of our heart. God wants to see how we act towards our leaders especially during times when we are treated harshly. John Bevere states that the greater hardship you endure, the greater the authority God entrusts in you (Under Cover, Chapter 13). God grants us an opportunity honor him by how respond to authority. God wants to see us advance in life and utilizes his delegated authorities to test whether or not we can are ready for our next promotion. This was evident in the story of the Tale of Three Kings, where David was tortured and abused by King Saul. During this tough period, David never grew in contempt of King Saul, instead he kept his honor which eventually lead up to his succession as the next king of Israel. God will not promote us if he thinks we are not ready to handle it.…
