Looking Back and Looking Forward

In my younger years I had some pretty distorted views about the world around me thanks to my parents, mostly my mother, but as I have grown up and am now an adult those views have changed immensely and made me a better person.

My name is Justin Firpo and I grew up in a decent sized town called Fullerton, California. Let me backtrack a second. I was born in Dallas, Texas, but raised by my adopted parents in Southern California from age 3 months until 18 years old. Fullerton was your standard definition of a town for people who were of the upper middle class to the lower upper class income classifications. This paper is being written with the intent to describe to you how my upbringing at a very early age, my own secretly kept views, and later events in my adolescence has shaped me into who I am today.

I am from a neighborhood of folks who are well off financially with decent sized houses and nice cars. My parents, Marikate and Robert Firpo, were

    America the Lazy

My parents both came from Ghana with no one to help them in 1971 (my father) and 1974 (my mother). Most of my family actually all came from Ghana, Africa to America, so I guess I’m a first generation American. They were both sent to America by their parents in hope to obtain jobs and hopefully be able to bring their siblings to America as well so they could do the same. My parents were both very intelligent students who met in school back home but parted ways when my father left America. They both happened to meet by chance at a church in the Bronx. They soon married and started a family. I grew up in the Bronx as a very poor kid. My parents enforced the need to obtain an education through their own example. So with that the pressure of being something beneficial to society was heavily pushed upon me and my other siblings. I remember my mother frequently saying “If I were you guys I would be a doctor to make my mother proud”. I particularly remember as the middle child of five…

I was born in the suburbs of the Bronx and raised in the Brooklyn, New York. At a young age, I never understood the amount of hard work my parents had gone through to raise me and give me a great life I have today. They emigrated from South Korea to this country in hopes of the American dream. They had their definition of the American dream as working hard to become successful. They were strong believers in that hard work would result in great results and rewards. My parents took huge sacrifices in order to make it to this great nation. They had left their families, their jobs, and their culture to start a new life. My father went from being a chemical engineer to making a small living as a delivery man for a clothing company while my mother worked as nurse in a small clinic in downtown Brooklyn. We didn’t live in the best of neighborhoods, but it was sufficient enough to provide shelter and food. It took a lot of pain and long hours for my parents to provide for me and they have taught me the most crucial life lessons. They told me that the most important lesson is life is to always put other people before you. They explained how if you are always there to help others and be there for another person, they will return the favor to you. This helped shaped my identity as to be a caring person who is always willing to help out those in need. Throughout the rest of my life, I would encounter this life lessons…

Throughout my childhood, I’ve been exposed to a variety of socioeconomic environments which have given me a broad world view. When I was four years old, my family emigrated from Pakistan to Detroit. My parents, who were trained physicians in Pakistan, weren’t licensed to practice in the U.S. My father became a bartender and my mother a maid to pay for our one bedroom apartment in the projects. It was difficult but my parents sheltered my brother and I the best they could. I remember when the only thing in our pantry was a jar of peanut butter and a bag of sliced bread. Times were tough, but I have the utmost respect for my parents for getting us through. I’ve also come to understand how people who live below the poverty level can survive.…

The two essays I chose for my final portfolio were Maira Kalman’s “Back to the Land” interpretive essay and Josh Neufled “A.D. New Orleans After the Deluge” interpretive essay. I found it quite easy when it came to deciding which two interpretive essays I would have to choose for evaluation because I was able to analyze both the purpose and audience clearly in the two essays. Also, with both Kalman and Neufeld’s essays I received positive responses, and felt that I could confidently write about both and maintain a controlling purpose. I found similar themes in the two essays that included: hopelessness, people who were affected by something that they couldn’t control, and the use of imagery as an effective medium. In the process of writing my interpretive essays, I learned about the complications of representing “truth” and I tried to spread this knowledge to my readers by maintaining a controlled purpose, interpreting the two essays, and using examples from both essays and explaining them further.…
