Long John Silvers: A Short Story
“oH MY GOD” I shriek. Jeffrey is flailing desperately in the water, half swimming, half drowning. I quickly search my surroundings for any items of use. I find a lifejacket and toss it over the side.

“G-get he-l-lp” he sputters. I nod quickly. I’m about to make leave until I hear incoherent screaming. I run back to the side. Jeffrey is hastily swimming away from something. I try to spot what it is. Is that a shark fin…?

I’m running around until Long John Silvers stops me. Long John Silvers is Jeffrey’s uncle who used to be a sailor or “sea dog” as he likes to refer to himself. He seems to have a permanent scowl on his face. He doesn’t talk very much.

“Help. Jeffrey. Water...SHARK” I wheeze out. Long John Silvers nods. He seems to understand my nonsense.

He looks up at me. He looks slightly relieved.

“Are you going to save me?!” he shouts. He glances back and in panic, continues to swim wildly. “You have to save yourself!” I yell back in reply. His curses were deafened by the sounds of splashing.

“You have to punch the creature in the eye!” I continue. Jeffrey faces me in terror.

“Look, it’s the only way” I insist. He stares at me like I’ve lost my mind.

I plead “Jeffrey please trust me.”

“Emily, if I die, please take care of my dog.” He turns and starts swimming towards the lone shark fin. He goes underwater momentarily and the small gray fin travels away rapidly. Jeffrey bursts out of the water breathing heavily. He starts laughing crazily and looks back at me.

“I SURVIVED” He shouts gleefully. He begins to whoop and I couldn’t help but laugh myself. I didn’t realize in the chaos that Liz and Long John Silvers appeared beside me. Liz looks smug and Silvers has a slightly relieved scowl. We all begin laughing as Jeremy retells what happened. We admit our fears of what was going to happen and express our relief.
