Jaws Analysis
For my final project, I choose to watch Jaws directed by Steven Spielberg, 1975. Jaws is set on Amity Island known as a popular summer tourist destination. As the town prepares for its annual Fourth of July parade, a shark lurks in the waters threating the town’s main source of summer income. After multiple shark attacks, three men take it upon themselves to catch the great white shark that has plans on ruining the summer.
At the opening shot we find a group of kids siting on the beach with a bomb fire going. As a girl and guy break away from the group they begin to run down the beach and find a spot that they can take a swim along. She ventures into the water and after a few shots we see her body jolt. Spielberg provides our first suspenseful

As the town’s people are complaining about this decision, Mr. Quint is introduced into the dynamics of the film. Quint is a rough around the edges, not hold barred, and say it like it is fisherman. Quint’s solution to the problem is to hunt down the shark. His fee would be ten thousand dollars. After some conversation with the townspeople, the Mayor decides that fee is too high and offers a smaller reward for anyone who catches the shark. Alex’s death and the newly announced rewards serves as the rising action element of the narrative.
As we see the droves of fisherman descending upon the docks to catch the most wanted shark, we meet Hooper from the Oceanographic Institute. He has come due to Chief Brody’s request to examine the first victim. During his examination of what is left of the first victim, Hooper says it is clearly a shark attack. Hooper and Chief Brody leave the examine area and see a group of fisherman on the dock with what they say is the

All of a sudden the man’s boat is tipped over, as well as Michaels, and the shark comes up slowly and grabs him and pulls him under. There is a close-up shot of Michaels face with the expression of fear and shock. The sound of the man’s screaming is heard and then we see Jaws head coming out of the water to grab the man and his leg fall to the bottom of the pond. Already an hour into the two hour film; this is the first time that the director has given us a view of what Jaws looks like. Such suspense has been placed on what this creature looks like and Spielberg delivers it in this shocking scene by not using the non-diegetic sound that we have so far associated with the shark attacks.
As Michael floats in the water, the next shot is perceived to be from the shark’s point of view as it moves toward Michael and then veers away. Michael is retrieved from the water and Chief Brody stares out into the blue sea. Chief Brody and his family are now at the hospital while Michael is getting check. He see that Mayor and makes him sign a voucher so they can contract Quint to get this this killer. This is the films climax. The shark has personally affected Chief Brody and now he is on a mission to hunt it down once and for

Forsythe attempts to magnify the size of the issue by suggesting that the only solution to solving the number of attacks is to kill a number of sharks reducing the species population. He uses statistics of “seven attacks in the last 4 years” to encourage the reader’s support. This positions the reader to view the writer’s argument as more convincing because it appears to be objective and reliable.…

I was able to suspend disbelief. Steven Spielberg does an amazing job at capturing the audience and captivating their minds into the story. To the point that you are just wondering what is going to happen next not if it is possible for it to happen. When you first watch the movie you are not thinking that it is not possible for a shark that big to feed and live in shallow waters such as Amity Island or that the diver’s tank in the great white’s mouth would not actually blow the shark into…

    Analysis of the film Jaws

    • 2872 Words
    • 12 Pages

The beginning of the film Jaws starts of with the first attack. This scares the viewer from the very start and excites them, wanting to know what happens next and who else will be victims. The first victim, a girl, is attacked at night, so this would mean it would have been dark. This is done for two reasons, one the dark is scary to everyone as no one can see what is coming for them, or what it out there, and that links into the second reason, so we don’t see the shark, leaving a sense of mystery. The camera shot changes from being at eye level with the girl to the point of view of the shark. Being at eye level with the girl makes the person watching feel as if they are in the film itself, and can make the person feel more fear as they also know that there is something fast approaching because the shot keeps changing to the point of view of the shark, looking up at the girl swimming. When the shark attacks the girl it keeps the shot at eye level with the girl making the viewer feel as if it could be them. Then the girl is dragged under the water right in front of the camera, making it feel as if it is close to the viewer but also confirming that the girl defiantly has gone under the water. Then in the next part of the movie where they find the body one the beach, the viewer is the last to see the body. This holds suspense and makes the viewer want to see it more as they see everyone else see the body of the girl and reel back in horror, but also makes them not want to see it, as they can see it will be gruesome. When the report is being filled out for the death there is a close up shot of ‘shark attack’ being typed, this is the first time there is some confirmation that it was a shark that killed the girl, and also it makes the viewer look out for a shark in all the other scenes to come.…

Then Spielberg uses a medium shot to show the young boys rushing into the water and this gets Brody even more agitated as there are more potential victims. Then you see a boy calling for his dog and this is shot in a two/medium shot, and then all you see is a stick floating in the water but no dog so this gives of a sense that something is going on. Then you see the boy on the lilo in a low angle shot and a point of view shot of the shark makes the victim look helpless. The next camera shot is a long shot from the beach of the boy on the lilo getting attacked by the shark and this shows the scale of the predator. Chief body realises what is happening and this is expressed in a “dolly zoom” as it zooms in on Brodys face but the cameras on a track and the camera moves backwards while it’s zooming on his face. Then the general panic of what’s going on is put into a long shot and you just see crowded panic and screaming. And then all of a sudden it goes quiet and all you can hear is the calming noise of water lapping against the sand and then shows a close up of the yellow lilo which confirms that the…
