London In London, William Blake portrays a very dark and abysmal picture of London. Throughout the whole poem, Blake never mentions a positive scene. The poem seems to deal with the lower class part of society, the part which lives in the poor neighborhoods. The first stanza begins with the speaker wandering around London. Throughout the poem, Blake repeats a word which he used in one line, in the next line. An example of this can be seen in the first two lines. He uses the word chartered in the first line without any deep meaning to it, but the use of the word charted in the next line shows that the Thames was set up so that somehow people control where it flows. In the next few lines, the speaker talks about all the negative emotions which he sees in the people on the street, "In every cry of every man,/ In every infant's cry of fear,/ In every voice, In every ban,/ The mind-forged manacles I hear." In the final line of the first stanza, the speaker says that he hears the mind-forged manacles. The mind-forged manacles are not real. By this I mean that they are created in the mind of those people whom the speaker sees on the streets. Those hopeless and depressing thoughts, in turn imprison the people whom the speaker sees on the street. When the speaker says that he can hear the "mind-forged manacles" he doesn't mean that he can literally hear the mind forged manacles but that he can hear the cries of the people which show their mind-forged manacles. In the second stanza, the speaker focuses on two specific occupations, the chimney sweeper and the soldier. The word blackening in the second line of the 3rd stanza is used in an interesting context. Why would a church be blackening? Blackening can mean getting dirty, but I don't think that the speaker is using the word blackening in that sense.     In Stanza 2, the man washes himself up at a tap where he steps into mud, as there is always mud at taps. ‘Vandals Lavatory’, Grey uses the word ‘Vandal’ as he does not appreciate people vandalizing the streets to ruin the beauty of the Australian Coast Lines. The persona flushes the toilet and gets a chill whilst flushing, it’s the use of an actual toilet that gives him this chill as hitchhikers if not able to find a nearby toilet will often go in a bush.     First, the speaker opens the poem by saying “In this country there is neither measure nor balance” (l.1). This has a negative connotation and is the initial expression of how the speaker uses diction to display negative feelings to society. Another negative connotation is when the speaker calls the clouds “man-shaming” (l.3). The speaker also refers to people as “trolls” (l.6), insinuating that people are slaves to society. These negative connotations are directed towards the mundane city life with it’s “labeled elms” (l.9) and it’s “tame tea-roses” (l.9). Another portrayal of the speaker’s mockery of society is the use of sound devices. This is important when considering the diction because the plosive sounds give the reader a subconscious understanding of how the speaker feels. For example, the word “gesture” (l.4) presents the naturalistic view on how insignificant people are in comparison to the clouds. As seen in line six, “trolls” also is used for a sound device coupled with negative connotations. Another example of coupling plosive sounds with negative connotations would be “Public Gardens” (l.7). The plosive sound devices are purposefully placed by the speaker to create a more apparent dissatisfaction in his diction. More often than not the speaker makes blatant statements towards the harsh and confining life in the city. By stating “one wearies of the Public Gardens” (l.7) the speaker is deliberately pointing to the civilization’s tedious lifestyle.     In the poem Here Larkin describes the city as ‘rich industrial shadows’ this suggests Larkin sees it as dirtily rich with corruption lurking in the ‘shadows’. ‘Shadow’ suggests misery, a lack of hope and spiritual enlightenment. ‘Shadows’ suggests blindness, perhaps to clarity which Larkin is trying to pursue but ‘swerving east’ away from the city. The author’s stay true to the theme of exploitation and cruelty by providing the reader with a somber tune throughout all readings and providing explicit and raw scenarios that the characters were in.     In his poem, Flames and Dangling Wire, the first line immediately sets the scene allowing us to have a sense of where we are.
