1.Having chosen your organisation, critically evaluate atleast three important operations that ensure it continues as a going concern.

‘100 years of accelerating tomorrow’ is the brief phrase that sums the legacy of Lockheed Martin. One that not only states its presence at the frontier of technology but radically changing the momentum of time itself.

Introduction

Lockheed Martin, a US based company which came into existence in 1995 through the merger of Lockheed Corporation and Martin Marietta as of 2012, represent the world’s largest defence contractor employing 123,000 people worldwide, with the majority of its revenue from military sales. Altogether it represents a global aerospace, defence, security and advance technology company with worldwide stakes. Aeronautics, electronic systems, information Systems & global Solutions and Space systems are the company’s main core business areas, with the first three being the majority contributor to its revenue stream. The company floats on the New York stock exchange and was 58th on 2012 Fortune 500 lists of largest industrial corporations.

Literature Review

The financial times lexicon defines core operations as the part of a company's business that is central to its overall strategy and typically generates the bulk of its revenues and Lockheed Martin’s nuclear business processes seems to be a reflection of it. How these operations ensure its survival are further discussed.

Evaluation & Analysis

Aeronautics for which Lockheed Martin is world renowned can be considered as its Cullinan diamond. The company draws upon the history of the former Lockheed and Martin Marietta corporations. Lockheed Martin draws a distinct edge against its main competitors as it’s product portfolio exceeds its rival by far which includes the C-130, C-5 and C-141 transport aircrafts as well as the F-16 (purchased from General Dynamics), F-12, F-117and F-22. It is one area where it undoubtedly stands at the forefront highly evident through the unprecedented worldwide pre-order of its F-35 lightning II multirole fighter jets. The F-35 represents Lockheed Martin pinnacle of aeronautical engineering and this was displayed to worldwide audience on the 7th June 2010. The company also convert aircrafts into hybrid models for serve alternative purpose such soldiers and vehicle transportation.

Information Systems & Global solutions represent the second pillar of the company employing 30,000 highly skilled professionals with $10 billion in sales alone. It brings together a wide range of the corporation competencies in IT solutions , advanced technology expertise and management services. Along with this IS & IG is a leading IT and federal contractor with a resilient legacy of delivering world class solutions and providing advanced technology across a vast array of civil and defence areas.
