Lisa Drayer's The Beauty Diet
It seems like we’re always been told to cut down on sugar, but for many of us, that’s easier to do. According to Lisa Drayer, nutritionist and author of “ The Beauty Diet,” some bread contain six grams of sugar per slice. Some pasta sauces may contain up to 12 grams of sugar per serving, and some low fat salad dressings, which people might associate with healthy eating, can contain 10 grams of sugar per serving. Furthermore, Natural Sugar are found in foods like fruit and milk, in the form of fructose and lactose.
The World Health Organization (WHO) says there is no reported evidence of effects from eating sugars, fruits and vegetables that also contain vitamins, minerals and fiber. The problem isn’t the “ hidden” sugar. We are just addicted

Which is better? Stay fat to keep a good friend or being able to get skinny and make new friends. That is one of the main questions shown throughout the story. In this book “Staying Fat for Sarah Byrnes.” Eric, one of the main characters, is one of the ugliest kids in the school along with a girl named Sarah Byrnes who has scars on her face from when she ‘supposedly’ knocked a pot of boiling water on her face when she was younger but as we find out later throughout the story we learn that it was really her abusive dad, Virgil Byrnes, is the one that pushed her face onto a hot stove. The main reason Eric is friends with her is because they are both ugly so they just became friends with each other mostly because they didn’t have anyone else.…

"Sweet and Low" is the story of those ubiquitous little pink packets of sugar substitute that you see in restaurants and diners and coffee shops — the story of the role saccharine played in the diet revolution that began sweeping America in the 1950's and the story of the artificial sweetener wars that raged in the 80's and 90's. The story is about the family that invented first the sugar packet and then Sweet'N Low, capitalizing on Americans' diet madness to build a company that by 1996 was producing 50 million packets of artificial sweetener a day at a factory in Brooklyn. In this book, the author (Richard Cohen) plays multiple roles of narrator, stage manager and chorus. The rest of the characters in the book are Benjamin Eisenstadts: the eldest in the family, whose inventiveness and drive made the family's millions, but who basically "wanted a simple life", "A piece of grapefruit. Something sweet in his tea." Ben's wife, Betty, "the power behind the throne," a woman who wanted "a pile of money to protect her from shame and disaster," a woman who believed that "love is finite" and must be allocated among family members, with some getting more than others. The…

Over the past years I have heard a lot of talk centered around the popular diet book, “Skinny Bitch”. I was interested to learn what all the commotion was about, this assignment was a great opportunity to read this book. I was surprised to find that “Skinny Bitch” is based upon a vegan diet. I was also surprised by the way in which the book was written, it read and sounded much more like my girlfriends and I chatting with one another rather than a professional legitimate diet book. There are cuss words splashed throughout the book and the writer is very direct with her opinions. However, as the reader it was truly convincing and made me feel like I better get my butt up, throw out any meat and dairy in my kitchen, and get to the store and buy a case of tofu, ASAP. Because the diet is vegan that means absolutely no meat, including poultry, pork, and fish. Also no dairy, including eggs, cheese, basically no animal by-products are allowed. There is also a chapter on artificial sweeteners and processed food, which are not allowed in the diet either. The book strongly suggest to quit smoking and cut back on alcohol, which I absolutely support; smoking is disgusting and large amounts of alcohol are unhealthy.…

Sugar has occurred naturally in our environment since the dawn of time, and mankind has been enjoying its sweet taste almost that long. After all, glucose occurs naturally in corn, fructose is the natural sweetener found in fruit, sucrose occurs naturally in sugar beets and cane, and lactose is found in milk. They all taste "equally" sweet on the tongue, but our bodies can tell the difference between these monosaccharide 's, and they most certainly don 't have equally beneficial effects. Recent studies comparing how human bodies respond to simple sugars show that consuming fructose poses a greater risk of heart disease, diabetes and obesity than consuming equal amounts of glucose. This paper compares and contrasts these two simple sugars from their chemical composition and structure to the different ways that each is digested and metabolized within the human body.…
