Kristen Swanson (1991) began her career as an OB nurse and was interested in the effects that miscarriages and death of younger children had on mothers. Swanson and her colleagues began to look at how the mothers handled the circumstances of the death of a child at a young age over the course of three studies done during the 1980’s. What was discovered was that the staff members were able to help the mothers during these periods by showing compassionate care for the patients and the families. Swanson was a student of Jean Watson, who is another nursing theorist interested in the idea of caring. Mary Jo, grandmother to 18, has worked hard, served the community, and is a model citizen. Mary Jo Vogel, 74, aspired to be a nurse since she was a young girl. At a time when women had little opportunities, Vogel, then Zitka, informed her high school guidance counselor she wanted to be a nurse. Her counselor informed her she did not have the grades and would never become a nurse. Although she struggled through her courses in high school, Zitka was determined accomplish her goal. However, she had always known that wanted to become a nurse’s aid just like her mother was. Her first job was assisting her school’s nurse in washing sheets and cleaning counters. After graduating high school, she decided to stay home to be with her parents, rather than going off to college (but if you ask her, she attended Hard Knocks). As I grew up, she also brought me to work with her and I befriended the majority of her coworkers and I specifically remember one named Donna. She and I used to talk and go room to room to see her patients. There I learned what to do and how to talk to patients as well as how to help them recover. My grandmother, Margaret Eipperle, worked as a nurse for her whole life. She lived at home in a small town on a farm and traveled to Des Moines, Iowa to work at the hospital there for about twenty years. Margaret is now 90 years old, but still remembers when the years long ago when she was very busy, caring for hundreds of patients around the clock. As a reluctant and nervous nineteen-year-old, I walked in to my first day as a nurse aid to a brightly lit, and mostly bubble gum pink Women’s Service’s unit. I worked there through nursing school; and happily accepted a job as a nurse after graduating. Nine years, and a lot of joy, tears, and learning in between, I continue to call this place my home. Nursing is, by definition, “a profession or practice of providing care for the sick and infirm”. However, that is not everything. A nurse is a caregiver, a provider, a supporter, and a friend. A nurse is a mediator, working as the middleman between the family and physician.
