Confederate Soldier: Wade Collins
July 1st, 1863
Gettysburg, Pennsylvania

Dear Mirabella, This letter might be the last time you ever hear from me. I’m writing this letter to you to inform you that I entered this war with confidence and a true heart, knowing that I’m fighting for an honorable and true cause.
We have stationed at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania but I’d rather be home with the family in South Carolina. The Union and the Confederates have collided on this day, July 1st, 1863; Lee concentrated us here with the objective of engaging the Union and destroying them. Our battle with them seemed to have happened accidentally. Two Confederate Brigades under the command of General Heth moved in to occupy the town of Gettysburg but the town was already occupied by two Union Brigades commanded by General John Buford. The fighting broke out during 8 in the morning when we moved in from the Northwest. The Union held their ground for over an hour waiting for their reinforcements. They eventually retreated which gave me the opportunity to take some time to write you a letter. …show more content…
I’m looking up at the sky to view a blanket of gray clouds. I feel a gentle and warm Southern breeze hitting against my face and skin. It refreshed me and my thoughts.
I feel it’s best for me to leave it here. I’m a true to my country and my cause but I also miss you and my baby boy. Don’t worry so much about me, I will return if I make it with the hopes of continuing a beautiful and healthy family. Write back to me if you please, but don’t expect a response in return. I love you very much

    In Memoirs of General William T. Sherman, it reveals Sherman letters to the Union generals. Sherman letter to General Ulysses S. Grant, commander in chief of all Union forces in the Civil War, he discusses his belief about the size of armies and how that plays into of the nature modern warfare. “We ought to ask our country for the largest possible armies that can be raised...” (McFeely 114). Sherman feels it is important thing as the self- existence of a great nation should not chance war (114). He believes the bigger the army the better. The letter to General John Bell Hood, commander of Confederate Army of Tennessee, discusses their wrangle over the city of Atlanta. Sherman has deemed that citizens now residing in Atlanta should remove. Since Sherman believes that Atlanta is no place for families and his real reasons are they want all houses of Atlanta for military storage and occupation and to contract the lines of defense. Because of these reasons he is providing food and transportation for further north and transportation by cars for Rough and Ready. Sherman letter to General Hood is hoping this proposition of his meets Hood views. Hood response to Sherman letter was he does not consider that he has any alternative in this matter. He describes Sherman removing proposal as “the “unprecedented” measures transcends, in studied and ingenious cruelty, all acts ever before brought to my attention in the dark history of war” (119). Sherman justifies his “unprecedented” measures by referring to General Johnston whom very wise and properly removed the families all the way from Dalton down. Sherman also feels it was unnecessary to appeal to the dark history, when recant and modern examples are so handy.     I now take the opportunity to write you, journal, and a few lines to let you know that I am well and hope the same for my family back home in Massachusetts. We left Baltimore August 11th, and we arrived here August 14th. We rode day and night in the cars. We came here to guard rebel prisons. There is 5 thousand here to guard. I think we shall stay here until our time is out. Only 84 days more to serve under Uncle Sam. After all of this time, it has begun to dawn on me the magnitude of the whole ordeal. Every day puts me in a life or death situation, and I see my colleagues leaving only to never return. The horrors of war are eminent, and I blame it all on slavery. It seems extremely clear to me that all men are equal, in every aspect, and we cannot possibly let people get away with imprisoning our own brothers, and forcing them to work the fields for which we receive the wages. O, but man is a fickle creature who shall not learn his lesson until it has been duly explained, or forced out of him, something that I would hope this war will prove to cement in the minds of those blasted Confederates. The bible clearly says that all men are equal, under God who created us in his own likeness. If only there were an easier way to show the wrongdoings of these slave-owners, then many lives will have been regained, including the lives of those who are presently enslaved or future slave generations, not to mention the casualties of this war! But, the bible also says to judge not your peers, but this certainly could not mean we be ignorant of the trespasses against humanity that are being undertaken by our Southern neighbors! For that is what led me into this pursuit initially, the hope that one day we can see all human beings having the same mutual respect of all people, no matter what color their skin is, and no matter what decisions they make in their life.     Around 4 o'clock in the afternoon, Longstreet's corps—Hood's, McLaws, and R.H. Anderson's division detached from Hill's corps, attacked Sickles's 3rd Corps at the Peach Orchard and crushed it, driving the remaining soldiers through the Wheat Field and Devil's Den. While Longstreet's attack was in progress, Richard Ewell's corps launched an effort to route the Union forces holding Cemetery Hill, but his men found the steep hill difficult to climb, the Union resistance too strong, and, though their front reached the cemetery gate, they were forced to retreat. At the height of Longstreet's battle against Meade's left, Barksdale's Mississippi Brigade charged into a widening breach in the Union line, at a cleft in the ridge, and was almost into the Union rear when McGilvery's artillery battery galloped up, unlimbered, and annihilated the brigade with canister blasts (Gettysburg). Meade's old Pennsylvania Reserve division came shortly after and charged into Plum Run Valley, backing Longstreet's men into Emmitsburg Road. Both armies suffered heavy casualties on this day.     Things were rough here at the battle of Gettysburg. Today is July 4th 1863, the day after the battle ended. Brother Bob and myself fought bravely under Confederate General Robert E. Lee. At the start of the whole thing we were quite confident in our ability to win due to the astounding victory at the Battle of Chancellorsville, Virginia, in May 1863. We all felt extremely good in the direction this was heading, as General Lee only intended to collect supplies from Pennsylvania farmland. He also believed that we needed to leave poor Virginia alone, as the majority of the fighting had occurred there already. Us Confederates only wanted to threaten those Yankees, stop everybody wanting to fight, but most importantly, win a battle on Yankee soil. That would teach them to respect our Southern pride and traditions. I, personally, don’t necessarily want to be fighting all these other good men, but my Southern culture is being threatened. Surely you understand that Aunt Caroline. No one wants their lifestyle to be taken away from them. Anyway Aunt Caroline, let me tell you all about the fighting. We started off Northwest of the city of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania on July 1st. Us confederates were fighting with 30,000 men and we had the Yankees outnumbered by 10,000. We were able to defeat them the first day although we weren’t so lucky for the rest. On the 2nd day of fighting, the Union army brought 90,000 men to fight our 70,000 confederates. The fighting seemed to stay back and forth all of the 2nd day but I believe that the Union army still had the upper hand on us at the end of the day. On the 3rd day of fighting we were atop Culp’s Hill ready to fight those Yankees! General Lee came up with the plan to charge the center of the Union line on Cemetary Ridge with 12,000 Confederate men.
