Letter of Appeal
“The reason most people never reach their goals is that they don’t define them, or ever seriously consider them as believable or achievable. Winners can tell you where they are going, what they plan to do along the way, and who will be sharing the adventure with them.”-Churchill
In my life I’ve always had a plan or a certain path I was destined to take to reach my goal or destination, but when things don’t go as planned what is one to do? Give up, or try again? When I read this quote it reminds me that no matter what life throws at you, you have to find a way to overcome the obstacles to get what you want and giving up is not an option for me. This quote happens to be one of my favorites because it always sets me back on the right path and helped me during my four years in high school. I tried out for cheerleading three times and never made the team until my fourth time. I made the inaugural JV cheerleading team at Mountain View high school my sophomore year and it was the best thing to happen to me at the time, unfortunately during practice one afternoon I was dropped and landed on my right ankle and completely broke it into two pieces. It took eight screws, twelve stitches and a rope to put my ankle back together. I was rushed into the emergency room for surgery, my doctor said I was lucky my bone didn’t pop out of my skin. I was forced to take three weeks off from school just to recover and this was towards the end of the semester. When I was ready to go back to school I was using a wheel chair for about a month, I was under narcotics (pain medication) while attending class which made it hard to concentrate and I had to leave class to go see the school nurse to take more medication. So I was missing quite a bit of class, not to mention all my physical therapy I had to go to after school and some days during school. It took a lot to recover for me. I tried so hard to keep track of my school work, I stayed after school When I didn’t have therapy just to make up everything and get tutored from my teachers and peers but somehow it wasn’t enough. I failed my history class with a sixty-eight percent even after I made up my work and explained to the teacher I was coming to school in a wheelchair while I was on pain medication. I wasted no time making up my credit in history. I also failed math that year, and that’s what put me so far behind and the main reason as to why my GPA is outstandingly low. During my junior year I was still considered a “sophomore” so I was put in a sophomore math class I did fine gaining my credits back and made a “B” my first semester and “C” my second of sophomore math. Bu there was another obstacle I was soon I faced and that was that my senior year was right around the corner and was still a whole year behind in math. My counselors starting telling me that I was not going to be able to graduate on time even my parents started thinking my graduation was going to have to be delayed they saw my goals as unachievable specially when I started my senior year as a junior. I quickly put a stop to their negative thinking and had already came up with another plan because just like Winston Churchill said, “Winners can tell you where they are going, what they plan to do along the way, and who will be sharing the adventure with them” And that’s what I wanted to be, a winner. I started going to Phoenix High School the very first day my senior year started for a whole semester and the goal to be achieved there was to gain my first semester and second semester credits in a matter of weeks. I was going every day from 3:30-6:00, no breaks while balancing a job at Chick-Fil-A, with all of this work going on at the same time just helps me prove to you guys that I can manage anything, complete my work and will do my best to succeed at GGC. I defined my goal, I believed in myself and I achieved it. Just when everyone had doubted me I proved them wrong and was back on track to graduate with my peers and represent Mountain View’s graduating class of 2013. I’m a full senior now, I take stat/discrete math at school for my sixth and seventh period. So it’s like phoenix again except I leave at 2:10. I passed stat. gained that credit and I’ve maintained an “A” (95%) in my discrete class as of today. My grades this year have been the best, I’ve applied myself greatly this year in all of my classes and hope to exempt most of my finals. I recently applied to GGC hoping to get accepted after I did well on my compass test, and I understand my GPA does not meet the required GPA because my transcripts won’t be updated until January of this year showing I made up my credits for stat/discrete which keeps my GPA at a solid 1.69 until January but I refuse to get a late start on my future. But I would really like to be given a second chance and would like to be looked at again as a student for Georgia Gwinnett College I would be a great freshman and never disappoint anyone at GGC. I plan on making A’s and B’S just to prove that to GGC and myself that I’m not a failure and I can succeed on anything I believe and put my mind into. And so far believe that it is a wonderful school that will take me where I need to go and help me achieve my goals and pursue my ultimate goal which it to attend UGA one day and graduate with a bachelor degree and become a reporter. I would love to have GGC be part of this next chapter I’m about to take in life. So please take your time to look at this appealment letter and thank you so much for your consideration and this second chance you have given me to re-apply and hopefully get accepted.
Sincerely,

Cindy Juarez

In life, to successfully move forward I need to establish goals. “The tragedy in life is not reaching your goal, but having no goal to reach” (Leadership for Student Activities, 2005). I must have a plan of how I will achieve my goals and be able to identify when an important element of that goal is reached. Possible setbacks must be considered and purposeful schemes arranged for when the unexpected shows up. According to Deci and Ryan (1984), “Goals, whether trivial, routine, significant or life altering, are part of peoples everyday lives”.…

    Minimum Wage Job

“You’ll never make it,” they all said, my boyfriend, family, teachers, and friends. It was like my life was already figured out for me, as if I didn’t have a say. The message was loud and clear. They all expected me to fail, to settle for a minimum wage paying job, to settle for just a high school diploma. For a while I went around believing that all I could do was the minimum required. But then I realized that I was capable of doing so much more. As time went on I realized that I did not have to live up to other’s low expectations and I started making a name for myself. I knew that studying a little harder for every test, joining clubs, volunteering, and running for leadership positions would later pay off.…

But then, one varsity football game on a Friday night I have been hit in the leg with my opponent’s helmet. I tried to walk it off, but the pain was overwhelming and the coaches had to take me out of the game. A few days after the game, the pain had still not gone away so my parents decided to get my leg checked out at the hospital. After a quick X-ray it was clear to the doctors that I had two small fractures in my leg, they went on to tell me that I could not play football for a couple of weeks, meaning I would not be able to play some of the last football games of my senior year. So under all this stress, pain and the amount of time football took out of my day, I was close to just giving up on my grades and to just start to feel sorry for myself, but I decided to keep on working and never giving up, because I always believed that “Success isn’t always about greatness, it’s about consistency…” -The Rock. These words have been a part of the few of which I follow with all my heart through this crazy game of…

Malcolm X once said, “There is no better than adversity. Every defeat, every heartbreak, every loss, contains its own seed, its own lesson on how to improve your performance the next time.” In the face of overwhelming adversity, what gives me the cause to hope? Ever since I was little I have been competitive in all different levels and types of sports, many of which I have stared right into the face of adversity. Injuries, family problems, and being strewn out between 400 miles of highway between Tennessee and Georgia have given me plenty of reason to give up on my sports…my true passion and desire. Did I give up? Did I let the face of adversity tear me down? No. I let my desire to persevere build me up even stronger. Instead of adversity staring me in the face, I was the one staring into adversity’s face. I have been asked, “What gives me the cause to hope?” Being able to prove to myself and others that I am capable of withstanding and overcoming any obstacle that life and adversity throws at me, is what gives me the cause to hope. I have learned over the years that no matter how hard or how massive the obstacle, if you believe in yourself and have faith in you and your abilities, you will persevere. You have to be wondering, it cant just be the desire to prove myself that gives me cause to hope, what else could it be? I have faith in myself and in my character traits. I know that everything I am faced with I will fight with the heart of a C.H.A.M.P.I.O.N. To me the word C.H.A.M.P.I.O.N. means: Courage, Hard Work, Attitude, Motivation, Perseverance, Integrity, Outstanding, and Desire to be Number One. I truly believe that when I am facing adversity in the face that I will prove myself and fight with the heart of a C.H.A.P.I.O.N. I agree with Scott Hamilton when he says this, “Adversity, and perseverance and all these things can shape you. They can give you a value and a self-esteem that is…

I am writing to show you my disgust with the article you have written about teens and the food that they consume. The way you talk about teens in this article appalled me, how are you able to say that “teenage girls’ junk food diet leaves them starved of vitamins!” after reading just the title I could tell that you were going to make all teens look bad; do you think it is fair to put this much pressure on the poor girls? A lot of girls already have to try to look their best because they are always getting judged by people, then to put this pressure on top of that…As woman thought that you would have understood the problems that teenage girls go through; yet throughout the whole article you repeatedly attack them.…

Wow I never expected I would be asked to write a letter to myself, I always thought letters were for other people. Maryann you have been the foundation for your sisters as well as your self. You have had such a tough journey but have managed to pull through with a smile on. When you lost your mom at thirteen I know life seemed like it was ending but it was only the beginning, it has shown us you are a brave, intelligent and caring young woman. I remember the day when mom died like it was yesterday you had no idea what was going to happen; you were more concerned about the girls than yourself. You were forced to move into an abusive home where you were mentally and emotionally abused daily. You had an alcoholic father who didn’t give a rat’s ass, but you would turn around and tell your sisters life will get better. I know you strived to keep life as normal for you girls as possible even when you moved eight times in four years.…

I am writing to inquire whether the Xavier Foundation would invite a proposal from the Virtual Community Group, Inc., requesting an investment of $50,000 per year over two years to support our Enterprise 2000 initiative. This grant would provide part of the funds needed for us to train at least 1200 low-income entrepreneurs in rural New Hampshire in the computer skills they need to create sustainable businesses as we enter the twenty-first century. Your literature indicates that the Xavier Foundation is searching for innovative ideas to improve the lives of the rural poor; we believe Enterprise 2000 falls well within your area of interest.…
