The PBS Frontline documentary “Rape in the Fields” reveals the gross atrocities of human rights violations against undocumented immigrant women throughout America’s vast farmlands. The group consists of a half-million female workers. Culturally they are from a male dominated society that migrates to the U.S. for economic opportunity. These women are underprivileged workers without access to learn English. They are unaware of American laws that protect persons from violence and crime. They are very afraid and focused on basic survival instincts. Because they are in this country illegally, they are afraid of being deported and lose their income. Fear keeps them from speaking out and uniting to make changes in their work environment.…

    A Rape On Campus Summary

Rolling Stone’s “A Rape on Campus” was one of the most scandalous journalism mistake ever seen. How a magazine such as Rolling Stone could publish an article that was a complete and total lie, is beyond me. In my opinion, Sabrina Erdely ignored many red flags that should have brought up some skepticism about the story she was reporting on. When Erdely first heard Jackie’s story she said, she remembered being “a bit incredulous” about the vividness of some of the details Jackie offered. This should have been the first red flag that something about this girl’s story was off, but Erdely believed that Jackie’s story was reliable so she continued. Another warning sign would be how Jackie was a “challenging source”. Not only would Jackie not respond to Erdely’s calls, texts and emails, but she also refused to release the name of the man who organized her attack. When Erdely finally did get the name of the man who had overseen her assault, Jackie was unsure how to spell his last name.…

On June 19, 2016, 60,000 Okinawans marched to demand Japan's government to kick out U.S. military bases after the killing of a local woman by a man who was stationed at a U.S. base. Kenneth Franklin Shinzato, a 32-year-old military contractor and former Marine, was stationed at the U.S. Kadena Air Base. He was arrested last month on the suspicion of killing a 20-year-old native and leaving her body. This wasn't the only incident on the island, In March 2016 a U.S. Navy sailor, Justin Castellanos, was arrested over the rape and killing of a Japanese woman in Kyushu prefecture. Okinawa has already been on the radar for some time due to planning for relocating the Marine Corps air station to a less-populated part of the island. The plan was developed in 1995 when another native girl was raped by three American servicemen.…

As research unveils that women, regardless of age and race, have a high risk of experiencing sexual assault, the U.S. Government has responded with differing attempts at definition of sexual assault and legislature that protects victims. Over the years, these laws and policies have transitioned into providing more concrete definitions of sexual assault and rape, who is at risk, and where do victims go for help. For example, the Uniform Crime Report (2004) defines forcible rape as “[t]he carnal knowledge of a female forcibly and against her will.” A further definition of carnal knowledge is provided and incidents where it would be considered forcible rape. More recently, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (2009) released a Frequently…

We all know that our prisons are the final point for the socially rejected criminals and violent transgressors. We know that our prisons are so overcrowded that the Supreme Court of California issued a court order to reduce the number of inmates. We know that since there are more inmates in prison the chance of getting rehabilitated are very slim to none. And we also know that the ratio of supervision of guard to inmate is extremely high. But do we know what goes on in our prisons and jails? We know we have prison gangs, drugs, assaults, robberies, and even murders in prison. But what happens when you mix an overcrowded prison or jail with violent, drug using, angry, abusive, gang related men with the average…

Teresita went to a fraternity party because she'd heard that this fraternity "really knew how to have fun" and she really needed fun after a disastrous academic week. She knew that some women had been taken advantage of at previous parties, but she put that out of her mind, as she downed one drink after another. Just when things were getting dull, the coolest guy on campus took her by the hand, led her upstairs and talked her into having sex. The next day, Teresita noticed that her vagina was bruised and bleeding. She barely recalled having sex, but knew who was responsible for her condition, and filed rape charges against him with the campus administrator.…

My behavior dictates whether or not I become a victim; or more specifically, whether or not I seem to be tempting my attacker dictates whether or not I will be attacked. According to the theory of victim precipitation, in active precipitation, victims provoke their attackers by tempting them to attack. In my opinion, I found it rather interesting that in studies of this theory, homicide, rape, and feminism go hand in hand when merely talking of the subject. What sparked my interest of this specific theory was what Menachem Amir, author of “Victim Precipitated Forcible Rape”, had to say in his article about how female rape victims contributed to their attacks by dressing in a provocative manner.…

The Rape of Lucrece represents the famous poet William Shakespeare’s take on a famous legend from the Roman Empire. In this story, Tarquin a young and wealthy Roman citizen, disregards everything that he owns in order to pleasure himself with the body of Lucrece, the young maiden who has caught his eye. Despite the dreary tone of this poem the author manages to analyze topics going well beyond the scope of Rome, the first of which being the efforts of evil in attempting to rid the world of all that is good. In addition, Shakespeare also questions the concept of morality, and the effect it can have on the decisions of a man. Finally Shakespeare examines the social norms of Rome during the time…
