Assignment: Write a journal

Topic: Reflect on the need for a guide
Purpose: Why do we need a guide? What are the differences between guiders and helpers?
Journal Entry # 1

Bear Grylls once said “A man … needs to learn when to turn to others for help and guidance,” signifying that no man can survive in this world without any kind of assistance, which is provided by a guider or a helper. A guider is either a person who advises others, especially in matters of belief, or a thing that forms some opinion about an issue. On the other hand, a helper is a person who gives assistance and support.
In ‘The Alchemist’ I think that the main character Santiago had several guiders as well as helpers. One of Santiago’s most significant guiders was Melchizedek, the old king of Salem. I consider this guider to be the one who set Santiago on the right track from the very beginning. He was the one who was able to make him realize that his personal legend was not only a part of his soul, but was part of the soul of the universe as well. The Englishman who Santiago met in the carven on his way to the oasis was yet another guider. He was the one who insisted that Santiago had to fulfill his destiny and seek his treasure before marrying Fatima. He taught him to listen to his heart closely since it can be deceiving, just to make sure his love for Fatima is true. Another important guider was actually a thing not a person, which were the omens. Among the omens that guided Santiago were the two stones that Melchizedek gave him. Those two stones made it clear to him that he was ready enough to make his own decisions. Another omen that guided him was going through the desert with the Egyptian caravan. I consider this to be an omen because when he arrived at the oasis he met Fatima the girl who he instantly fell in love with. The hawks were yet another omen that guided him to warn

Throughout this novel, Coelho uses archetypal men. The men he uses are the Alchemist, his father, and the King of Salem. Wise old men symbolize the ‘savior’, ‘redeemer’, and the ‘guru’. The first of the three wise men that Santiago encounters is his father. His father had wanted Santiago to become a priest, but despite those wishes he had; he still gave Santiago his blessing when he told him he wanted to travel and become a shepherd. The second wise man Santiago encountered on his journey was the King of Salem. This man motivates Santiago to follow his personal legend. He tells him that his recurrent dream is true and he should follow the dream to the pyramids of Egypt. The final and most important wise man Santiago came upon in his journey was the Alchemist. The Alchemist was the one to “push him” to stay on the right path of following his personal legend, rather than staying with Fatima in the oasis. He guided him through the desert and taught him many things along the way, including about the Soul of the World and how everything is connected. “You must understand that love never keeps a man from pursuing his Personal Legend. If he abandons that pursuit, it’s because it wasn’t…
