JESUS CHRIST’S MISSION CONTINUES IN THE CHURCH
23 May 2013
Saint Joseph I chose St. Joseph because he is an awesome role model for our church. Joseph is the patron saint of fathers, carpenters, social justice, and the universal Church. Joseph became the patron saints of those things because of how he lived and what he did for the people around him while he was alive. Unfortunately Joseph’s words were not recorded in the Bible. So everything that we know about Joseph must be ascertained from the actions he performed that were recorded in the Bible. Those actions however are sufficient enough to show that he was a good religious man. We know that Joseph was a religious and just man because Joseph obeyed the laws set before him whether they were the laws of the Romans or the laws of God. Joseph also secretly wanted to divorce Mary once he found out that she was pregnant, but once God spoke to him he decided to marry her anyways and adopted Jesus as his own flesh and blood and raised him. Joseph was born of the house of David. The names of Joseph’s parents and the date of his birth and death are lost. The age of Joseph, due to the lack of information, has always been a guess. We can however, link Joseph to Bethlehem because he and Mary had to return there for a census so he may have been born there or moved there at some point in his life. Joseph was a carpenter. There are many subdivisions to carpentry; it is unknown what subdivision Joseph worked as. Joseph worked at a carpentry shop, it is also unknown if he owned the shop or just worked there, it is not mentioned in the Bible. The last time Joseph is mentioned in scripture is when Jesus is in the temple of Jerusalem at the age of twelve. Another reason it is thought that Joseph died after that event is because when Jesus is thirty years old Mary is described as a widow in scripture. The way that Joseph lived brought him closer to God. Joseph had dreams about angels and they instructed him as how to act. One of the most important things that brought Joseph closer to God was listening to the angels sent by God and agreeing to wed Mary and adopt her unborn son as his own. By doing so he became one of the closest people to Jesus and spent the most time with Jesus second to Mary. Joseph lived with God and had great influence on Jesus in his childhood, he taught him his trade, carpentry, and showed him an example of how to act. A Bible verse that supports his closeness with God is Matthew 2:19-23, that Bible verse talks about an angel appearing to Joseph in a dream and telling him that it is safe for him to return his family to their homeland now that Herod is dead.

Jesus was born to Mary and Joseph sometime in the fourth century according to the gospel of Matthew. The exact date is not sure because there were no records kept at that time. It was told that Mary had conceived a child before she was married to Joseph. In that time, it was taboo to have a child before marriage. When Joseph found out about this, he was going to call off the wedding. That night an angel appeared to him in a dream and told him that Mary was a virgin. Mary had conceived through an immaculate conception by the Holy Spirit. The Angel said that Mary would have a male child, and he should call him Jesus.…

    a. Joseph shows deep compassion to his brothers even when his brothers wanted to kill him. Joseph was second in command in Egypt and could have easily turned his brothers away leaving them to die, but instead he decided to love them and help them through the famine. Envy is the basis for how Joseph’s brothers behaved. It started with them envying Joseph because he was his father’s favorite. Then they were envious of his coat of many colors, and finally they were envious and offended by the dreams Joseph experienced. This envy drove them to sell their brother into slavery, which leads to another theme, diligence. Joseph showed diligence and devotion to God. Even when he was thrown in jail and framed for things he did not do, he still diligently sought God and followed his…

A new role model I have now in my life is a sister named Dorothy Stang. Dorothy was someone who wanted to make a change in the world and was willing to help anyone she met. Dorothy left her life in Ohio where she could get plenty of anything and she then went to a life where she met people who were struggling to survive by their survival farming. All of those people there had troubles getting what we sometimes take advantage of here. She left the United States and went to Brazil to continue on God’s mission and assisting others. Her strength, faith in God and her selflessness are three of the qualities that she portrays that I admire the most. Dorothy gives such a great example of Christ in the world. She brought the joy of God to so many people in the rainforest.…

My sponsor has been my "role model" throughout this process, but as I begin my Catholic life St. Elizabeth Ann will be my guide. St. Louis

This outing has influenced my view of St. Louis in many ways. Before this outing, I did not know that St. Louis was home to a large number of refugees. As mentioned in class, most of my time is spent in the SLU bubble, so I have never been exposed to the different ethnic cultures within the city. I enjoyed learning about the diversity within St. Louis, and I am excited to explore new ethnic restaurants. Also, this fact about St. Louis resonated with me, due to the fact that Des Moines is also home to many Bosnian refugees. I attended grade school with children who had traveled to America to escape the Bosnian Civil war. In fact, there is a community of Bosnian refugees that live a few streets away from me. As a child, I did not understand the classifications of a refugee or why they choose…

    Moral Saint Meaning

    • 1060 Words
    • 5 Pages

The lack of a Moral Saint in the world today as well as a lack of historical moral saints begs the question of whether such a being can possibly exist. I would tell you that such a notion is ridiculous and that to truly commit oneself to morality is impossible. By moral saint I refer to what Susan Wolf defines as, “A person whose every action is as morally good as possible, a person, that is, who is as morally worthy as can be.” The sound of such a person is absolutely terrifying, but the question of their existence is not simply denied by mere definition. However, to achieve the high honor of moral saint would require that one give up all things that would not achieve the most moral end. This means that all made by the saint will improve society and benefit other people, which would necessarily require that any and all pursuits that are not in the interest of moral benefit would not be taken by the moral saint. Neglecting to enjoy extracurricular activities, though selfish and giving no benefit to society, make for a person that has no dimension to character and no interests of which to talk about or pursue. That person is not going to be able to adequately survive in a natural…

Once he had proven himself, he was able to take the plates to translate them into what is now known as the Book of Mormon.…
