Job hunting costs can be deducted if you are king for a position in the same line of work as your current or recent job. You cannot deduct these expenses while looking for your first job. Qualified job hunting expenses can be deducted off even if you did not get a new job. These expenses must be in excess of 2% of your adjusted gross income Job-hunting expenses incurred while looking for your first job don't qualify. Although you cannot deduct job-hunting expenses if you are fresh out of college and looking for your first job, moving expenses to get to that first new job are deductible. Your first new job must be at least 50 miles away from your old home to qualify. If you do qualify, you can deduct the cost of getting yourself and your belongings
