I have been asked to develop an action plan for Anne Ewers as she moves forward with the ongoing merger of the Utah Opera and the Utah Symphony. A balanced scorecard has been provided for both organizations, and this document will include analysis of the strengths and weaknesses of each organization and recommendations that Ms. Ewers can take to address the weaknesses. Additionally, I will analyze the four aspects (including strengths and weaknesses) of the scorecards for each company and finally identify one highly probable issue that could arise during the merger process in the areas of finance, human resources, and customer satisfaction. Recommendations will be made for how the merged company executives can mitigate each of these issues.…

In analyzing the Utah Symphony and Utah Opera merger case study, it was obvious that many factors, finances, personalities, and even the community would be involved. The wide reaching affects of a merger between these two types of organizations was eye opening. At the time of the proposed merger, the Utah Opera had a stronger financial footing and was not in danger of closing. The Utah Symphony however, was sliding down a dangerous financial slope. The organizations were structured differently in their number of employees and financial compensation packages. These differences would prove challenging in a merger and could be the basis Bill Bailey would use to oppose such a merger.…

In the case of the Utah Opera, the most desirable reward (valence) would be remaining financially solvent in spite of a weak economy. The required performance (expectancy) is to support or oppose a merger with the Utah Symphony to strengthen the financial standing of both organizations. The belief in the attainment of the desired outcome (instrumentality) is the continued success of the Utah Opera. In order to motivate the Opera’s board of directors using these factors, Mr. Bailey would need to emphasize the vastly different financial considerations of the two programs. Contrasting the Utah Opera’s business model offering flexibility for performance scheduling, as well as the organization’s cash reserves, and tangible assets against the Symphony’s contractually obligated business model lacking any flexibility, high expenditures, and little or no assets to speak of would be of significant importance. By concluding his assessment of the proposed merger with exerts from the letters of opposition written from the community and Mrs. Abravanel, Mr. Bailey would present enough logical and factual information to convince the Opera’s board of directors to oppose the merger.…

As Chairman of the Board for the opera, Bill could rely on Maslow’s hierarchy of needs to find motivation tools to support the merger. Maslow theorizes that as one need is met the needs further up the pyramid become important. Both the opera and symphony exist and have lives thus meeting the physiological needs. Moving up the pyramid from safety through self-actualization Bill could find ways to describe how the merger helps both organizations fill the needs for themselves which would in turn help the merged organization. Each organization has strengths and weaknesses, such as the opera having a stronger fund-raising history or the symphony having a greater reputation, which could lend themselves to ensuring the success of the merger.…

Company X does not currently have any environmental initiatives. There are a few I would readily recommend, going paperless, turning off our computers before leaving, and allowing more telecommuting. Each one of these can help protect the environment by reducing pollution in one manner or another. These are all small changes that could have a big impact. With a company size approaching 150 employees we can generate quite a bit of pollution just in our day to day activities without knowing we did so.…

The concept of area is one that is difficult for some. In order to introduce the concept of surface area of a cube, they must first understand the difference between 2D and 3D objects. I will have objects that they see in everyday real life. I will bring in both an inflated and a picture of a beach ball as well as a few other examples. For a cube I will bring in a small box that forms a cube and a cut out of a cube. I will start by showing them the difference between the cubes. I will label each side of the 3D cube to demonstrate that the cube has six sides. I will clarify that all sides of a cube are equal. I will demonstrate this by measuring the box to solidify this concept for the students.…
