Jason's Role In Greek Mythology
riton doesn’t have his own myth, but he was mentioned in major myths. Most notably, he played an important role in the myth Jason and the Golden Fleece. In the myth, Jason and his crew set out to sea in search of the legendary Golden Fleece. While searching for the Golden Fleece, they were stranded in Libya near the Tritonious lake. Triton, knowing the dangers of the area, disguised himself as human and approached the group. The men told him they were stranded and Triton, in disguise, suggested they make an offering to the gods. When the men made an offering to the gods, Triton revealed himself and led them back to the Mediterranean Sea. Some versions of this myth even suggest that Triton sailed the ship across land.
Triton was also mentioned in a myth where Misenus, a Trojan hero, taunted Triton by blowing into a conch shell, which is what Triton used to control the sea. With the fury of a god, Triton sent a huge wave and drowned Misenus. In the myth of the Gigantomachy, an enormous war between giants and gods, Triton blew into his conch shell to scare the giants with its ear-piercing

I believe these morals are important because the message is to be kind and helpful to others instead of being rude, mean, or feel superior over others. A comparison of today would be the class system of wealth distribution. A person who may be considered rich is no more important than a person who is considered poor. Our modern society strives to be equitable and even if a person is rich doesn’t mean they shouldn’t help those less fortunate. In fact, it is a moral obligation to help those in true need of assistance. Most gods in Greek and Roman mythology were selfish, rude, and didn’t care for human lives. Comparatively, even people in modern society feel superior to those less fortunate and do not feel it is their job to help them. Triton was different. He helped those who were in

A man will guess where his morals come from. What is right and what is wrong, what is good and what is bad. Some may say these are acquired, but then why would every civilization to ever come about have similar morales? “For example, some people wrote to me saying, ‘Isn’t what you call the Moral Law simply our herd instinct and hasn’t it been developed just like all our other instincts?’ (Lewis 19) The book Mere Christianity by C.S. Lewis goes into great depth into what morals are. The book covers many topics that apply to all sojourners traveling through life. Mere Christianity really opens your eyes and helps you compare the analogies to your own life. In reading the book one can muse about the meaning of life which is bigger than the…

Without these values, these civilizations would be significantly different and would likely not have survived as long as they did. Values are essential to each civilization, just as how order was important to the Babylonians, morals were important to the Egyptians, a deity or multiple deities were important to the Egyptians, Chinese, Israelites, and Jews, and lastly, honor was important to the Greeks. Even today, many of these values still are in use and significant. These values truly did help each civilization…

In 1871, German archaeologist Heinrech Schliemann excavated a site in North-western Turkey, understood to have been the ancient city of Troy. Schliemann’s archaeological discoveries provided substantial evidence in that the city of Troy existed, and that Homer’s Iliad and Odyssey were factual accounts of the Trojan War. Through critical examination and investigation of prominent theories regarding the legend, it is evident that the Trojan War occurred, though not as described by Homer, however the Trojan horse is an aspect of the myth, which remains debatable. In order to develop definite conclusions concerning the Trojan War, it is necessary to understand the legend surrounding the war and horse itself.…

First a virtue ethics perspective is not incompatible with rules of thumb, which help those who are not fully virtuous.9 If this were not the case, one would wonder at the needs for laws in the Republic. There Plato makes it clear that the laws are needed to compel non-virtuous agents to lead a life which will help them become as virtuous as they are capable of being. This is similar in spirit to Aristotle's discussion of laws in the last book of the Nichomachean Ethics. Secondly, the role of laws may be perceived, even from a virtue ethics perspective, as guaranteeing the conditions necessary for citizens to live virtuous lives, e.g. peace, education. This claim seems to motivate one of the Personified Laws' arguments in the Crito, i.e. that Socrates owes his education, and his opportunity to live the philosophical life to the Athenian laws (50d-e). However, both considerations are relevant only if the laws in question are not incompatible with virtue and if they do indeed facilitate, rather than hinder, the virtuous life of citizens. Although this may be the case in the cities described by Plato and Aristotle, there is no evidence that the Athenian laws do have this…

For you tithe mint, dill, and cummin and have neglected the weightier matters of the law :justice and mercy and faith. It is these you ought to have practice without neglecting the others". (Matthew 23, 23-28). This is yet another reason for viewing Jesus' teachings as independent of religion. Jesus preached moral in a time where the depraved moral state of the Roman Empire was on its way down, leading people into systems of idol worship and living highly immoral lives. Whether people accepted his teachings or no, he represented higher morality than what was prevalent in the roman…

    46. I would not consider Jason a tragic hero. Maybe the reason why is because I am a woman and can relate to Medea’s pain. I began not like him in the second half of Jason and the Golden Fleece. I found with each task he became less and less of a heroic figure to me. Per Aristotle’s definition of a tragic hero, Jason leaving Medea for …. Would have been the rash decision that he makes without thinking of the consequences. This causes Medea’s wrath which leads to the death of his soon to be wife and father-in law, his children, and his place on the throne. While this wrath was an extreme unnecessary and tragic in itself, I still wouldn’t qualify Jason as a hero. Medea won his quest for him and then he has the audacity to leave her because she…

Compare and Contrast the writings of Confucius, Hammurabi, and the book of the dead

Three of the most famous writings from ancient civilizations are the writings of Confucius, Hammurabi's code of laws, and Egypt's Book of the Dead. At first, they seem very different, they're from different times, regions, and religions, but they all offer a peek into what values ancient people considered important.

One of the values that all three civilizations is justice and fairness. I feel that this is best viewed in Hammurabi's laws. All of the penalties for the crimes are very stiff, but fair. I feel that it is fair that "If he has broken the limb of a patrician, his limb shall be broken" It's like in the Bible "An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth." In Egypt, in the Book of the Dead, a man couldn't proceed into the after life unless he was found innocent of any wrong doing on Earth. In Confucius' writings, he never actually says the word "justice", but he does say "Great Man cherishes excellence; Petty Man, his own comfort. Great Man cherishes the rules and regulations; Petty Man special favors." To me, that mean "Great Man is fair, Petty man is unfair."

The second of these three values is responsibility and respect to one's family and elders, and responsibility and respect to others families and elders. This is most evident in Confucius' writings. He is constantly stressing family values and responsibility. One quote that shows this is "Let the sole sorry of your parents be that you might become ill."This stresses personal responsibility and respect to your parents. Hammurabi showed responsibility by saying "If a builder has built a house for a man, and has not made his work sound, and the house he built has fallen, and caused the death of the man's son, the builder's son shall be put to death." That quote shows a man's responsibility for himself and his family. In Egypt, during the ritual of the…

IV- Yakal Aside from their strong will and determination, they were able to surpass all their troubles because of divine intervention. For Perseus, it was an advantage that he was Zeus’ son. He was of divine origin and so he received more help from the gods and goddesses. Whenever he was in danger, his worried father would come to his rescue. Zeus sent deities such as Hermes and Athena to help him. Hermes and Athena provided him with proper equipment which included the sword, and the shield. Also through Hermes’s guidance, he was able to reach the place of the Hyperboreans. They gave him presents like the winged sandals, the magic wallet, and the cap which made the wearer invisible. All these were used to conquer Medusa. He made use of the materials bestowed upon him along with his own strength, courage, and skills. However, Jason had his comrades with him in his journey. On his search for the Golden Fleece, he was under the protection of the goddess Hera. She endowed him and the other Argonauts with courage, and Zeus helped speed them on their way. Hera also begged Aphrodite, the Goddess of Love for help. Aphrodite then sent his son Cupid to make the daughter of the Colchian king, Medea fall in love with Jason. Medea was a great help for she could perform very powerful magic. Jason owed most of his victories to Medea because she was the one who planned and did everything for him. Perseus’ whole life had been an adventure. Even when he wasn’t born yet, his life was already threatened by King Acrisius, his grandfather. He and his mother were locked inside a great chest and cast into the sea to die. Through Zeus’ guidance, they were able to escape sure death and lived peacefully in a place with kind people for many years. Another conflict had come when Polydectes, the ruler of the island, told him about how he badly wanted one of the Gorgons’ head as a wedding gift. Perseus, not being aware that it was actually a plan to lead him to death, went on to search for…

Many of the valued character traits include integrity, courage, honesty and fortitude. As Christians, we should want to make sure that we are pursuing the values that God has taught us to embrace through scripture. This incorporates qualities of love, grace, forgiveness and humility. As the Bible states, “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness. (Galatians 5:22). God does care about character in us and in our businesses. The Bible is filled with instructions on how to live righteously and in a godly manner by the numerous stories given and the lessons learned. In addition, the Bible states, “Therefore, just as sin entered the world through one man [Adam], and death through sin, and in this way death came to all men, because all sinned.” (Romans 5:12). The Ten Commandments include instructions that show us what to do to have godly character. These include, “Thou shall not” lie, steal, commit adultery, covet, or murder (Exodus 20:7-17).…
