The legendary story of Billy the Kid has been told for over one hundred years. Movies have been made since then, portraying a similar story of Billy the Kid. The popular movie, Young Guns, was made in 1988 and was based around the teenage life of Billy and his posse known as “The Regulators”. However, the movie had many major historical inaccuracies. One example of a historical inaccuracy was the age of Billy’s employer John Tunstall. The movie portrays him as an old fatherly figure to the regulators, however Tunstall was only a few years older than Billy and died when he was twenty-four. The movie also represents the regulators incorrectly. There were more than six regulators and they were not all young fit men, most of them were in their thirties and forties. They also did not call themselves the regulators until after Tunstall’s death. Another example of a historical inaccuracy in the movie Young Guns was the scene where Murphy’s henchmen shoot Tunstall in front of all of the regulators. Tunstall, by himself, was riding horseback and was shot while herding horses back to the ranch. An additional historical inaccuracy was the scene where the regulators are stuck in McSween’s house surrounded by soldiers. In the movie, only five regulators are stuck in the house with Mr. McSween and his wife. In reality, there were about 15 regulators and the battle lasted about five days, not two. At the battle, Billy the kid is shown as killing Murphy for the final scene. No matter how cool the ending was, it was completely inaccurate because Murphy was not shot by the Kid, but died of cancer in Santa Fe. Young Guns is a great movie but the historical inaccuracies in it are very…

However, the illusion of this setting was used for aesthetic and appeal purposes of the film. The concept of a lawless west as to an extent an adaptation by eastern writers to create a more invigorating topic about the newly expanded frontier of America. When comparing the the actual crime statistics, the popularly known gunfighting towns, such as Dodge City and Deadwood, were not as dangerous for the law abiding citizens as any other small western town or city. Most western towns were safer than big cities like Chicago and New York during the same time. Eugene Hollon, wrote that the western frontier “was far more civilized, more peaceful and safer place than American society today”. Even though the West is depicted as a place of chaos in many shows, movies and books, it was in many ways a place of order. During the 1800s, property and civil rights of the people inhabiting the west were protected. Private agencies provided the money for a ordered society in which conflicts were resolved. The film, departures from historical relevance and uses a more popular approach when describing the Wild…

    Lee vs Jackson

    • 902 Words

In the eastern front of U.S. Civil War there were two men who stood above the rest. Robert E. Lee was the commanding general of the Army of Northern Virginia. Thomas J. "Stonewall" Jackson commanded the Army of the Shenandoah. The military genius of these two men was far beyond that of any Union or Confederate officer in the east. History tells us that Robert E. Lee was one of the greatest commanding officers in history. History only tells us that Jackson was brave and stood like a stonewall at the First Battle of Manassas Junction, but was Jackson as good a commander as Lee? While they had their similarities these two men were very different in the ways they commanded their armies, and the ways they saw could end the war in victory for the Confederacy.…

The wild west was one of America 's most violent times. The American Wild West is a period of history rife with tales of vicious gunfights and battles between lawmen and outlaws. It is the story of exploration and forging a new way of life. Men, women and children left their homes in the East and headed West looking for land and riches. While Hollywood has tended to portray this historical era as one of harshness and violence, scholars have suggested recently that much of the violence in the Old West was more myth than fact. While violence might not have been commonplace, it definitely happened, sometimes explosively. From the gunfight at the O.K. Corral to one-on-one gunslinger showdowns, history reveals that this was a dangerous time.…

    Tombstone

The movie is set in the year 1879 in the old west town of Tombstone Arizona and focuses mainly on the historical character Wyatt Earp, his family, friends, and the events leading in the town. The main character Wyatt Earp is exactly what you would expect of an old west lawman, tough but with a sense of dry humor that plays well with the rest of the characters, like his older brother Virgil and younger brother Morgan. Wyatt, Virgil and Morgan also brought their “wives” on the journey with them, Allie, Virgil’s wife, Louisa, Morgan’s wife, and Mattie, Wyatt’s wife who suffered with a significant drinking and drug problem. Along with the usual “bad guys” there are many other colorful characters that liven up the screen such as, the leader of the cowboy gang, Curly Bill Brocis and his right hand man in the gang, Johnny Ringo. The cowboy gang is made up of over 100 Texas outlaws and conartists that represent the earliest example of organized crime in North America. Although these are the villains in the movie, both Curly Bill and Johnny Ring bring a sense of drama and suspense to the screen that makes them two characters that you “love to hate”. And of course there are some of the lighter characters in the movie which include Wyatt’s best friend, Doc Holiday, the former dentist suffering from tuberculosis who now makes his living in the saloons playing poker and slinging guns, but he also brings a good dose of comic relief with his dry humor and deep southern Georgia accent while aside his traveling companion, his Hungarian mistress that goes by the name of Big Nose Kate. Finally, we get to the lovely Josephine Marcus, the exquisite actress that catches Wyatt’s eye while in Tombstone, which eventually sets a spark to ignite the romance that you wouldn’t expect from such a historical movie. In the events of this movie you have suspense, drama, and even…
