Jacob Classroom Observation
Jacob is freshman working towards a standard diploma. Jacob had fit right in with his first year of high school by creating a strong positive relationship with his peers. He likes peer group and is eager to assist his peers in any classwork. Once he establishes a positive relationship with all of his peers and his teacher’s, he is enthusiastic to participate in whole classroom discussions. Jacob is a caring and friendly student when it comes to working with his classmates. He usually tends to joke around with his classmates because of his witty sense of humor. He has a helping hand to provide his knowledge of content to other students. When completing the personal strengths assessment, Jacob mentioned that he works well with peers and likes group work but has difficulty if someone as a question for him. Jacob has a strong connection to history and social studies because he enjoys learning about wars and medieval times. Jacob is not enrolled in history this semester but is excited to start world history in next year. Jacob is a huge gamer and …show more content…
This class will transition into English 9 next semester. He currently has an 81% in the class. Jacob struggles with writing organization, structure, and mechanics. He needs assistance to help him organize this thoughts and ideas for his writing. Jacob is reading below grade level and struggles with decoding and fluency of text. His comprehension of text skills is a lot stronger. Jacobs reading comprehension is excellent when he reads books on his independent reading level and when books are read aloud to him. He has a high interest in books like comics, war books, and funny stories. When Jacob enjoys the text and it’s on his reading level, he is able to retain specific details from the text. He can make connections to the text if he is interested with the topic of the book. Jacob is starting to slow down when reading and make connections so that he can build his comprehension

    The purpose of this study is to find ways to help a child improve their reading test scores. How is it that a child who reads two grades above their level cannot perform well when it comes to taking state assessments? Is it the teacher or is the child playing around when it comes to taking tests? Maybe the child can read really well but does not comprehend what they read and they get nervous during the test, which would also cause them to score low. This child was chosen because he reads at least two to three levels above his grade, but on the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test he scored below what he was expected to score.     In comparison, when students are reading with a teacher they are more nerves and more likely to make mistakes when reading. Maisinger, Schwanenflugel, Bradley, and Stahl (2004) in their study concluded when students are given the opportunity to participate in partner reading they have higher self confidence based on the positive feedback they receive from their partner. The research also measured students ability to stay on task when given the responsibility of reading with a selective partner. Students did follow directions and worked according to the given instruction (pp. 134- 137). Helping students improve their fluency is helping them over come those challenging words they continue to struggle with. Students also need to build confidence when they are reading to avoid making mistakes when they are reading. They need to have a sense of confidence when they read to someone else, and by hearing how their partner read aloud will allow readers to have an reading expectation from someone their age. The study did not mentioned students with learning disabilies or ELL, but this can be adaptable to them by placing them with students who are closer to their reading level and not their grade reading level. The study making the connection of improving fluency with the use of peer assistance with help the four students participating in the literacy intervention by assisting the person who is reading.
