Jack Garnham: A Monologue Of An Immigrant
Welcome

Ladies and gentlemen, Jack or Jack Garnham to give him his Sunday name, or, if he was in trouble, which did seem to happen from time to time, but most knew him just as Jack. Jack was a son and a brother, a bit of a Jack the lad, and a lovable rogue too. He wasn’t backward at coming forward, he was a man who knew his mind, and don’t ask his opinion, unless you’re prepared for the truth.

Jack was a boyfriend then a husband, and a well travelled soldier, he was a family man a father, grandfather and even great grandfather too. He was a strict man with clear ideas about life, and you’d be best not to cross him, but he was also a loving man, surrounded by a loving family. Jack was many different things to many different people over his

Jacks story starts way back in 1928, on the 9th of July to be precise, which would have made him 89 in just over 7 weeks time, and not around here, but all the way down in Ipswich, 46 Couriers Lane, to be even more precise, because that’s where his mum, Queenie, and dad ,William, were living at the time.
His dad was a stage shifter at the Ipswich Hippodrome, I think they’d call him a stage hand now, moving all the scenery between the acts.

And Jack wasn’t the only child to come along because there were also his three sisters, Iris, Rose and Violet, and his brother, George, too, although we’re not sure who came first, but what we do know, unfortunately, was that after his mum and dad divorced, he and his brother were sent to live with Bernardo’s, well, boys are a lot more work than girls, or so they thought at the time.

So not, perhaps, the easiest of starts for the young Jack, but it certainly made him tough. He went to school down in Ipswich, and stayed in regular contact with his mum, too, and his brother George. I asked if Jack had enjoyed school, “wouldn’t have thought so”, Jacqueline said, “he lived up to his name, a right Jack the lad he was, even back

Life sounded idyllic over there, stationed in Tampin, they had an Armour, which, if you don’t know, is someone who comes round every day to do your washing, cleaning, even cooking and babysitting too. Edith was never in, mainly played badminton all day apparently, not bad! Jack played too, I’m told. I asked if Jack had been some kind of an officer, no, he was a Senior NCO, and a Sergeant by the time he left, just the perks of being stationed abroad I

Despite almost all of the characters going through transitions due to the changed circumstances, Golding depicts Jack as the most explicit figure. “Jack and Ralph smiled at each other…The point tore the skin and flesh over Ralph’s ribs”. Initially, when Jack first shows up on the island, we realize that he is a leader of a choir, marching in military style. Although this foreshadows Jack’s totalitarianism and dictatorship, it still shows the typical characteristics of a typical teenage boy, wanting to take on leadership roles and smiling whenever possible. However, as Jack becomes obsessed with hunting pigs and eventually putting on the mask, he turns savage and gruesome beyond return. The fact that he uses a spear to attack Ralph immediately after Piggy’s brutal death shows Jack has completely lost his rationality and sense of human being.…

The character John Wilson is portrayed in the beginning as an honest man trying to make a better life for his family back home in Scotland. As the story unfolds we learn that jack's intentions are not what were originally portrayed. My opinion of jack Wilson started out as "just a man trying to better his family in a new world" but shortly after was challenged. Jack starts life out in Canada pretty rough, he can't find good work and the climate is hard on his lungs. In an attempt to get back home he applies for the army but is turned down because of his lung condition with a little luck he lands a good job with the RNWMP. This quote shows how he was the first few days on the island “Then the piglet tore loose of the creepers and scurried into the undergrowth. They were looking at each other and the place of terror” (31). Jack is timid to kill the first pig they’ve seen. This shows how when the boys first got on the island, they couldn’t do anything savage like. They were still the innocent little kids who don’t know what to do by themselves. Later in the book Jacks approach to death and doing it with his bare hands, “The boys drew back, and Jack stood up, holding out his hands… Look.” (69). Jack actually has blood on his hands and well kind of plays with it. In the first quote he couldn’t even think of killing a pig, now he killed a mom pig and basically finds it entrainment.…

His parents were Flora Hamilton Lewis and Albert James Lewis (1). C.S. Lewis’s older brother Warren, nicknamed Warnie was his close friend and his friend for life (Kennedy 2). Clive was looked over by servants when he was younger and mostly played indoors because of dangerous diseases that many parents were worried about at the time (Kennedy 1). As a child, his family went to Saint Mark’s Church in Dunellen (2). Clive’s parents first met at that church. C.S. Lewis wanted to be called “Jacksie” when he was four (Kennedy 8). He would refuse to answer if people called him by anything else. Eventually, he grew out of it and simply preferred Jack (8). Jack and Warnie’s fantasy grew when they moved to a house named, Little Lea (Kennedy 9). It was huge, with many rooms and it was far out in the countryside. In the book, Surprised by Joy, C.S. Lewis writes, “To me, the important thing about the move(Little Lea) was the background of my life became larger. The New House is almost a major character in my story. I am a product of long corridors, empty sunlit rooms, upstairs indoor silence, attics explored in solitude, distant noises of gurgling cisterns, and pipes, and the noise of wind under the tiles.” In this he writes that he loves exploring new places, and that you're never sure what you’ll find. C.S. Lewis’s mother died August 21, 1908 on her husband's birthday. For a few years Flora, was homeschooling Jack but after that he was sent toWynyard School (Kennedy…

In the extract, we also see a blunt side to Jack, as when Buckley asks why the person cannot play anymore, Jack considers what to say, and instead just tells Buckley “Susie is dead” which seems a rather harsh thing to tell a 4 year old child, but Jack cannot find any other way without it being to confusing for Buckley. However, the compassionate side of Jack is seen when Jack bursts into tears after explaining Susie’s death to his son, and explaining that none of them will ever see her again.…
