The Secret Lives of Sergeant Jack Wilson
Journal #2
The character John Wilson is portrayed in the beginning as an honest man trying to make a better life for his family back home in Scotland. As the story unfolds we learn that jack's intentions are not what were originally portrayed. My opinion of jack Wilson started out as "just a man trying to better his family in a new world" but shortly after was challenged. Jack starts life out in Canada pretty rough, he can't find good work and the climate is hard on his lungs. In an attempt to get back home he applies for the army but is turned down because of his lung condition with a little luck he lands a good job with the RNWMP. John meets a 16 year old girl, Jessie Patterson, who he immediately takes an interest in. all the while jack still has a wife and 2 children back home. This is the turning point from an honest man for him. Jack's feelings toward Jessie turn serious and shortly after a rumor that the Mountie in fact is still married appears. When confronted about this by Jessie's father he replies pg 30 "I was married, but my wife died after I left the old country" jack lies to cover up his marital status and this changes my opinion of jack from an honest man to a liar. We find out that jack's continual lung problem has evolved into tuberculosis. Pg 32 "I'm sorry to tell you jack but you have TB" jack becomes so sick that he can no longer take care of himself and relies on Jessie and her family take him in. Jessie cares for jack for all of winter until he slowly regains his strength. He doesn't repay them for the care they provided even though he put their whole family at risk of catching tuberculosis. He used Jessie and her family.
Jack's letters home to his wife Polly slowly reduce from once a week to a slow trickle once every few months. Polly becomes worried about he rhusband and fears something has happened to him pg 34 "The sixth hogmanay jack had missed. The fifth anniversary" jack's

Soon after the wedding, John and Polly moved into a house together and in May they had their first child, whom they called George. Alex Wilson was not a very determined or highly motivated person. John took money out of his own business to help but things continued to get worse. He started stealing money from his brother-in-law, Jim Hutchison to pay back the creditors but his attempts were futile and rendered useless. The Wilson’s good reputation was ruined and John was humiliated. He wanted to let things die down for a while so he decided to go to Canada for a year. He told Polly it would be just enough time to let the townspeople forget about the scandal. John promised to write lots of letters and then he was off, leaving behind his 6-month pregnant wife. Saskatoon was where John chose to go. He was intrigued by this prairie city because it was “The Fastest Growing City in the World”. All it needed were more people. In Saskatoon, the trains never arrived on time but imagine the surprise on the citizens of Saskatoon’s faces when John’s train arrived on schedule. It was so surprising that it even made the news. John immediately got a job and found a place to stay in a rooming house. On every Sunday, he would write long letters to Polly and also send home quite a bit of money.…

First, his decision to lie to his friends in like manner, his family in Scotland to give him loans for his business. John’s status as the son of a successful shop owner in Slamannan, Scotland led him to make terrible business decisions, in due time, ruining his dad’s business. In order to save the business, he took loans which he never paid back. “Jack, who couldn’t bear to see the once respected business end in disgrace, took out the money of the greenhouse business to pay off his brother’s debts. When things continued to slide, he panicked and stole money outright from his brother-in-law, Jim Hutchinson, to pay creditors” (Simmie, 9). John’s status as a son of a successful businessman led him to feel invincible in addition to feeling unpunishable. John’s character led him to commiting crimes no ordinary person would think about, John also, does not have to deal away with the technology that we have today, leaving a country and moving to the other was not as hard back than, as it is now. Throughout The secret lives of Sgt. John Wilson, the main character John is a very manipulative person. He lies to everyone around him to cover up previous lies that he’s told. John may not intentionally lie, but since he constantly lies it comes naturally to him. From the beginning of Wilsons first marriage to Polly, Polly’s family figures out what kind of man Wilson really is. Polly never caught on to Johns lying, “Polly’s family noticed Jack’s [John’s] tendency to lie when it suited his purposes, but Polly seemed oblivious to it” (8). Polly never realized that he constantly lied to her. Wilson left his family in Scotland, because he had stolen from his family. Polly was celebrating her sixth wedding anniversary without seeing her husband.…

In the story Jack is innocent and behaves like he still in the world of grownups. When he first enters the story he makes the choir wear their school uniforms even though it is unbearably hot. As soon as he sees Piggy he says “Shut up fatty” (pg.21), which shows him becoming meaner and not acting like he would if he were with an adult. Jacks first attempt to become chief was dismissed and given to Ralph, which is most likely what began his dislike for Ralph.…

Savage, fierce, violent, and uncontrolled. That’s what Jack was in the novel Lord of the Flies. The author William Golding showed cultural collision in the novel Lord of the Flies by introducing characters that became more and more savage and wild throughout the course of the novel. One of them was jack. Jack throughout the novel showed violence, an example is when he hunted and killed pigs. In chapter one page twenty-seven jack doesn't quite kill the pig and it starts his obsession of hunting and killing pigs, and when he actually kills one he becomes addicted to killing the pigs because of the rush of excitement and fun from it. By the end of the novel Jack had become so savage that he ended up killing two characters, simon and piggy. If…

Within the story, Alexie utilizes flashbacks to bring the reader closer to the characters. The flashbacks are used give the reader some insight into the past and let the reader see how the characters are brought up and raised. When the reader looks into a characters past, they can find the particular struggles the characters went through and the reader can also get a feel for what their life has been like. In the case of John Smith, the reader observes that John has had a hard time coming to terms with his separation from his tribe and never really feels like he belongs with Olivia and Daniel. In the case of Jack Wilson, Jack is suffering from much the same situation as John. Jack is orphaned and searching to belong. He takes refuge in his study of Native American culture. Jack even goes to the extreme of inventing a distant Shilshomish relative.…

Hide” situation is when, several months ago, he was fired from his teaching job for assaulting a student for slashing his tires. After firing him from the debate club, Jack found George Hatfield slashing his tires. Once again, “Jack had seen only red, and remembered very little from the encounter. And the next thing was Miss Strong holding Jack’s arms, screaming ‘Stop it, Jack! Stop it! You’re going to kill him!’” (King 164). This also supports the claim because Jack, when pushed far enough, becomes a completely different person, as he just beat a student half to death and hardly remembers it! This could be due to over-the-top rage, an unsound mind, or even maybe multiple personality disorder; all of which are serious problems. Jack’s “dark side” can be compared to a wild animal, because you never know what can send them on a dangerous rampage, either. For whatever reason, Jack Torrence, of all people, has something off about him. I believe this angry, monster side of him will only get worse as his isolated 5 month caretaker job progresses, and only strengthen the idea that anyone has the ability to do anything if pushed far…

    “No One's a Mystery”

The story I am completing and analyzing is “No One 's a Mystery" by Elizabeth Tallent. “No One 's a Mystery” is a brief, sharply detailed distillation of a doomed relationship between two people of contrasting personalities. The question I ask is who the characters are, and what parts of the story lead me to deem and back up my feelings about that certain character. To start off I feel that Jack is a hard one to analyze while reading it in a critical way. This is what I picked up on him Jack being a very cynical man who drinks heavily, doesn 't clean his truck, and has no obvious respect for women (Mexomorph). Jack and his young lover not only come to terms with their relationship but also illuminate aspects of their own characters of which they themselves are not fully aware. The story is more of a character sketch than a traditional tale containing a beginning, middle, and an end. The sequence of events is less important than the specific detail and the dialogue between the couple. (Esch, 2009) He is currently cheating on his wife with a barely-legal girl he has been having an affair with since she was sixteen. I think he is a man who doesn’t know what he wants. In the story when she is talking about marrying him and having his children down the road, he doesn’t seem to be much for it at least not as much as her. I think he really feels bad for what he is doing but he is caught up in the moment of the relationship and how easy it is, but doesn’t think through the consequences. I think he drinks so much to forget about what he is doing to his wife and he knows it is wrong, so drinking helps him cope with the last 2 years of having an affair, and soon to be a divorce that he states at the end of the story. He also seems to very demeaning towards women and it seems as if again he is not happy with his life he has lead on. Another thing is when he talks about his wife feeling safer when the lights are on when…
