The Secret Lives of Sergeant Jack Wilson
Journal #2
The character John Wilson is portrayed in the beginning as an honest man trying to make a better life for his family back home in Scotland. As the story unfolds we learn that jack's intentions are not what were originally portrayed. My opinion of jack Wilson started out as "just a man trying to better his family in a new world" but shortly after was challenged. Jack starts life out in Canada pretty rough, he can't find good work and the climate is hard on his lungs. In an attempt to get back home he applies for the army but is turned down because of his lung condition with a little luck he lands a good job with the RNWMP. John meets a 16 year old girl, Jessie Patterson, who he immediately takes an interest in. all the while jack still has a wife and 2 children back home. This is the turning point from an honest man for him. Jack's feelings toward Jessie turn serious and shortly after a rumor that the Mountie in fact is still married appears. When confronted about this by Jessie's father he replies pg 30 "I was married, but my wife died after I left the old country" jack lies to cover up his marital status and this changes my opinion of jack from an honest man to a liar. We find out that jack's continual lung problem has evolved into tuberculosis. Pg 32 "I'm sorry to tell you jack but you have TB" jack becomes so sick that he can no longer take care of himself and relies on Jessie and her family take him in. Jessie cares for jack for all of winter until he slowly regains his strength. He doesn't repay them for the care they provided even though he put their whole family at risk of catching tuberculosis. He used Jessie and her family.
Jack's letters home to his wife Polly slowly reduce from once a week to a slow trickle once every few months. Polly becomes worried about he rhusband and fears something has happened to him pg 34 "The sixth hogmanay jack had missed. The fifth anniversary" jack's

    John meets Polly. She was the type of person everyone gravitated towards and wanted to be around because she had such a sunny disposition and warm brown eyes that were trusting. After a year he began to court her and they fell in love. He eventually asked for her hand in marriage and they got married. Soon after the wedding, John and Polly moved into a house together and in May they had their first child, whom they called George. Alex Wilson was not a very determined or highly motivated person. He may work in his parents’ business but his laziness burned it to the ground. In order to salvage what he lost, he scammed various people for their money, including his own family. John took money out of his own business to help but things continued to get worse. He started stealing money from his brother-in-law, Jim Hutchison to pay back the creditors but his attempts were futile and rendered useless. The Wilson’s good reputation was ruined and John was humiliated. He wanted to let things die down for a while so he decided to go to Canada for a year. He told Polly it would be just enough time to let the townspeople forget about the scandal. John promised to write lots of letters and then he was off, leaving behind his 6-month pregnant wife. Saskatoon was where John chose to go. He was intrigued by this prairie city because it was “The Fastest Growing City in the World”. All it needed were more people. In Saskatoon, the trains never arrived on time but imagine the surprise on the citizens of Saskatoon’s faces when John’s train arrived on schedule. It was so surprising that it even made the news. John immediately got a job and found a place to stay in a rooming house. On every Sunday, he would write long letters to Polly and also send home quite a bit of money.…

    The story I am completing and analyzing is “No One 's a Mystery" by Elizabeth Tallent. “No One 's a Mystery” is a brief, sharply detailed distillation of a doomed relationship between two people of contrasting personalities. The question I ask is who the characters are, and what parts of the story lead me to deem and back up my feelings about that certain character. To start off I feel that Jack is a hard one to analyze while reading it in a critical way. This is what I picked up on him Jack being a very cynical man who drinks heavily, doesn 't clean his truck, and has no obvious respect for women (Mexomorph). Jack and his young lover not only come to terms with their relationship but also illuminate aspects of their own characters of which they themselves are not fully aware. The story is more of a character sketch than a traditional tale containing a beginning, middle, and an end. The sequence of events is less important than the specific detail and the dialogue between the couple. (Esch, 2009) He is currently cheating on his wife with a barely-legal girl he has been having an affair with since she was sixteen. I think he is a man who doesn’t know what he wants. In the story when she is talking about marrying him and having his children down the road, he doesn’t seem to be much for it at least not as much as her. I think he really feels bad for what he is doing but he is caught up in the moment of the relationship and how easy it is, but doesn’t think through the consequences. I think he drinks so much to forget about what he is doing to his wife and he knows it is wrong, so drinking helps him cope with the last 2 years of having an affair, and soon to be a divorce that he states at the end of the story. He also seems to very demeaning towards women and it seems as if again he is not happy with his life he has lead on.
