MMT2 Task #1 – Dr. Green’s Suggestions for Approaching and Satisfying the Expectations

A major goal of your SWOT Analysis is to ultimately be able to provide and justify a logically supported response to Part B3: Dificency with Greatest Negative Impact on the IT Infrastructure (weakness or threat). Things may appear foggy early on and still remain somewhat foggy as you approach Part B2, but through your logical well-reasoned analysis you should reach a point of clarity by the time you reach the summit. You’ll then be well-prepared to craft your response to Part B3, competently.

As you methodically work your way through each of the parts/sub-parts from Part A through Part B2, you are positioning yourself to be able to logically respond to Part B:3 Deficiency with Greatest Potential Impact, as it relates to AEnergy’s IT Infrastructure and its effectiveness in supporting company’s current and future business strategy and operations. Indeed, the reader should already know which deficiency (i.e., weakness or threat) you will present in B3, after they have read your B2 discussion. There should be no surprises in your B3 response. In B3 you will explicitly discuss the implications of the deficieny that emerged atop your list from Part B2. It is your opportunity and responsiblity to not only discuss the direct implication of that deficiency on the IT Infrastructure itself, but also the implications of that deficency on exisiting and future business operations and strategies (i.e., the company’s growth/globalization strategy). Parts A through B2 position you for B3. Likewise, Parts C through D1 build from B3.

This course uses the IVK Case Series to examine important issues in IT management through the eyes of Jim Barton, a talented business (i.e., non-technical) manager who is thrust into the Chief Information Officer (CIO) role at a troubled financial services firm. The course follows Barton through challenges, mistakes, travails, and triumphs. We take this journey with him, commenting on and debating his choices and decisions. During his first year as CIO, Barton confronts issues related to skill and talent management; IT costs, budgets, value, and chargeback systems; priority setting and financial justification of IT investments; project management; runaway projects and underperforming vendors; security risks and crises; Web 2.0 policies; communications with other senior executives; vendor management; infrastructure standardization; support for innovation; and risk management. As Barton encounters these issues, we address them too, through associated readings. As we examine and critique both research and conventional management wisdom on these topics, we’ll derive a framework for managing IT as a business leader.…
