Anne Frank is often misunderstood by many people throughout the story and considers herself as having no “true” friends. In order to feel that void she humanizes her diary, “Kitty,” to store her deepest thoughts when others would not understand or care to listen. Shortly after receiving the diary for her thirteenth birthday, Anne states, “Paper has more patience than people,” (pg.6) confirming her thoughts about the people surrounding her. However, the statement could never have been truer for Anne until after entering the Secret Annex.…

During the beginning of her diary entry, she acts as if she’s still living a typical school life. In paragraph 4, she writes “Thank goodness summer vacation is almost here; one more week and our torment will be over.” This shows how she’s still focusing on the little things in her life that made her happy. Another diary entry, Anne describes her new residence- the Annex. Paragraph 19, “Thanks to Father and to a brush and a pot of glue, I was able to plaster the wall with pictures.” This shows how, despite being in the midst of hiding, she still looks to the bright side of…

For example, robbers start stealing from the warehouse below the "Secret Annex". Because of this, as Anne writes, everyone had to give up certain comforts and be extra careful so they weren't discovered. Everyone must have the lights and water off at certain times of the day so it looks like no one is there. "It is half past eight, come back here, you can't run any more water; walk quietly!" Anne writes when describing their daily routine. Another good example is when the people of the "Secret Annex" constantly talk about what might happen if they had to escape or were discovered. "I hear nothing but this sort of talk the whole day long, invasion and nothing but invasion, arguments about suffering from hunger, dying, bombs, fire extinguishers, sleeping bags, Jewish vouchers, poisonous gases, etc., etc."(149) Altogether, these examples, in some way, show how the setting of The Diary of a Young Girl often supports the theme. There are constant changes to rules to keep everyone safe.…

“It seems life is at a standstill” (Diary of Anne Frank, pg 749). This seems to capture the people in annex’s situation perfectly. The slow decent into madness clawing at each other and arguing while waiting for some news to arrive. They all feel trapped in the walls of the annex unable to leave. Though happiness shines upon them at times, it never lasts. They can only cling to what memories they have, and wait for the future to arrive.…

Anne began to mature in the annex while writing in her diary given to her by her father. Writing the diary helped her to understand her frustrations and feelings. It helped her to discover who she was as well as not to take anything for granted. The diary helped her see how immature she was and how she had treated her mother bad and the Van Daans. She started treating them nicer. She was the only one that gave everyone a Hanukkah gift. When she realized she could talk to Peter, she realized not to take their friendship for granted because at the time, Peter was really the only friend she had.…

Sadly, the sense of relief and safeness may have been overpowered by the scariness of the time. During the time of their hiding, “They will not be able to go outside and they will have to share the darkness and dampness of the hiding place, continually fearful of being discovered…” (annefrank.org 2017). This means that everyday they spent hiding was in silence and with no interaction with the outside world. In addition to that, they had to spend two years with the same people, even if they disliked them. Inside the Secret Annex it was tense, due to constant stress and suffering that was brought upon these individuals’ lives.…

Anne writes about the changes she begins seeing in herself. On Saturday, March 25, 1944, Anne wrote “You never realize how much you have changed until after it’s happened. I have changed quite drastically, everything about me is different: my opinions, ideas, critical outlook. Inwardly, outwardly, nothing is the same. And, I might safely add, since It is true, I have changed for the better” (234). Here, Anne indicates that change can be a good thing. Often people see change as a negative, but Anne deals with it in a positive manner. Although everything going on around her seems to be going downhill, Anne finds the courage to change herself for the better. Anne Frank was always accountable for herself and her actions. On Saturday, July 15, 1944, Anne said “I have a great deal of self-knowledge. In everything I do, I can watch myself as if I were a stranger. I can stand across from the everyday Anne and, without being biased or making excuses, watch what she is doing, both the good and the bad. This self-awareness never leaves me, and every time I open my mouth, I think ‘you should have said that differently’ or ‘that is fine the way it is’ (325). Anne Frank never made excuses or blamed other people for her problems or actions. She took responsibility for her faults and made a vow to change them. Anne’s questioning herself is a method of self-evaluation, which serves, once again, to make herself a better person.…
