In the novel Peace like a River, Leif Enger creates the character Jeremiah Land as a Christ figure in order to convey the character’s role as a person whose life is spent serving others. Throughout the novel, there are many miracles performed, and some seem to obviously connect with Jeremiah. The intent of making Jeremiah a Christ figure comes to fulfillment by the novel’s end, when Jeremiah sacrifices his life to save his son, Reuben. In the creation of Jeremiah as a Christ figure, Enger reminds the reader of the importance of self-abnegation and apprehension for others, attitudes that make the pains of human experience tolerable.…

We also discussed how quickly the suicide scene happened. I thought it would be more drawn out and have more of his thoughts but the only thoughts there were, were him telling himself to do it and then it suddenly was happening. And it ended quickly with him standing and opening the door. But the after math of him getting on the phone with 9-11 and flying to the hospital takes longer. And is thoughts are very raw at this point. He is trying to comprehend what is going on and where he is. And after the accident happen, the writing becomes very monotone. And also very rude to everyone he talks to. For example when Magic Johsnon gave him shoes…

I'm Winona Finley. I am 16 years old and I am very sick as my mother says. I don't know what's wrong with me though, the doctors refuse to tell me. “Look to Me, and be saved, All you ends of the earth! For I am God, and there is no other.” Isaiah 45:22 (NKJV). I heard the question asked last night. “What rewards your life?” The answer was; to deeply appreciate those, who love you by loving them back. That’s what life is all about. You can ruin your life by desensitizing yourself. We are all afraid to say too much, feel too deeply, to let people know just how much they mean to us. But not God, in fact, we find in this verse how much He loves us. Many of us have a mental picture of what a Christian should be. Yet many of us don’t make ourselves vulnerable enough to fully narrow all our interests until our mind, heart, and body are completely focused and looking at…

The first 39 books of the larger work called the Bible, is called the Old Testament. The Bible itself is arguably the best selling and most read book of all time, yet it’s well known to be quite challenging to read through and understand. The Old Testament portion of the Bible, notably the most difficult portion of the Bible for most to study and follow, yields 39 books from multiple authors, and spans over 4000 years of crucial world and church history. If that were not enough to take on, the Old Testament comes our way through multiple styles of authorship and formats, including but not limited to, books of history, law, proverbs, ethics, philosophy, treatises, dramas, songs, epics, biographies, and letters. There have been many books written and published to survey, explain, and/or bring to light the Old Testament, but none more helpful to me than the review subject of this paper, the work of Dr. Elmer L. Towns, entitled “A Journey Through the Old Testament”.…

His friend starts crying while Scotty spazzes. The driver of the car stops, looks back, and drives on. Scotty walks home and sits on the couch and goes unconscious. Ann calls the ambulance and the husband, Howard. At the hospital, the doctor defies the fact that this is a serious matter as he insists that his condition is not a coma. Raymond Carver is pointing out that you should never take life for granted as anything can happen at any given moment. The doctor at the hospital is being defiant by not telling Howard and Weiss the real truth, the truth that hurts by progressively saying, “He’s not in a coma, he should be awake very soon.” Time goes on and Scotty is still not awake, and Howard and Ann are worrying even more.…

My hospital bed was ice cold and the bleak and empty white walls depressed me as the uncomforting thought that I would have to stay here for maybe another week brought tears to my eyes. The usual and oppressive smell of disinfectant lingered in the room as I recalled that night in my head, trying to convince myself it wasn’t my fault, as I had done everyday since the accident. It was the day everything changed and my life was turned upside down. Forever.…
