Is Technology Killing Our Friendships Analysis
In today's technology driven world, 76% of teens use social media. Social media plays a big part in my friendships. Some people say digital communication is a detrimental way to communicate, while others say it is beneficial. "A typical teen sends 2,000 texts a month and spends more than 44 hours per week in front of a screen" ("Is Technology Killing Our Friendships?"). The technology of electronic communication brings us closer together, helping our relationships.

Some teens find it easier to share their feelings with friends from behind a screen. In the article How Texting and IMing Helps Introverted Teens the author states, "users can control expressions of sadness and other emotions via IM without revealing emotional elements like

Technology can help you keep close friendships with friends who move away or with relatives who do not live near you. "You can watch your baby cousin grow up via Instagram and stay- up-to-date on hundreds of people at once" ("Is Technology Killing Our Friendships?"). You can share daily experiences with photos on social media sites like Instagram or Snapchat, unlike with the time lag of writing letters and mailing them. Facetime is a good way to connect with people if you aren't able to see them face-to-face. Additionally, with heavy homework loads and busy extracurricular activity schedules, teens don't have time to physically be with their friends. Furthermore, in most families, both parents work and aren't available to transport their kids to friends' houses. "These platforms help people stay connected like never before" ("Is Technology Killing Our Friendships?"). Through digital communication, teens can still check in with their friends electronically, while having busy schedules. Communicating on electronic devices allows you to engage with friends and family in real time at anytime.

On the other hand, people argue that due to online communication, kids are spending too much time alone on their devices. While it's true that kids spend a lot of time online, social media gives them ways to interact and connect with each other. For example, my friends and I share video clips and pictures that we find online through Instagram, and then we talk about them. "In fact, in many ways, online communication can make friendships stronger" ("Is Technology Killing Our Friendships?"). As can be seen, digital communication is beneficial to the friendships of

Technology of the current era can cause many different problems on people’s social well-being, which is a huge part of everyone’s life. A study shows that American people ranging from age eight to eighteen, spend about seven and a half hours a day on some sort of electronic. That is an absurd amount of time and leaves little time for in person social interaction between kids. This problem isn’t just in America. As a study in the United Kingdom shows, that their kids spend about eight hours a day with electronics. People really need to start realizing the dangers of these statistics. With all of this time consumed by electronics, it leaves very little time for people to interact with each other in a positive social manner, and kids can also develop problems from spending so much time with technology. People post things about their lives that everyone can see on social networking sites such as Facebook. This can lead to a lot of different problems including cyber bullying. Instead of posting all of this online, people should become close friends in-real life with people, so they can trust them with this information and develop…

I agree with Clive Thompson as I also believe that students are losing the ability to socialize not by technology but by parents. Most parents tend not to let their children go outside and socialize with friends because of safety reasons. Clive Thompson writes “They are not allowed to hangout the way you and I did, so they’ve moved online”. Most parents are scared to let their children go out, explore and socialize since these days there are murders, rapists and other harmful reasons. Technology in fact, might help children to socialize better as it facilitate texting, calling, snap chat and face book where your friends might be able find you and talk and socialize with you. For example, with technology you can also meet up with me people…

People who use social media are more connected. “Pew Research Center found that the average user of social media has more close ties and is less socially isolated.”(Social Media as Community, Hampton). Without any internet, we wouldn’t be as close with friends and we would be more socially isolated without social media. Users of social media know people from a greater variety of backgrounds. The internet helps us connect with friends, family, and people around all around the world. Without it, we could never reach out to friends or family in other states. There are many reasons why technology is ruining people's friendships. One reason why is because, people don’t talk to each other in person. Another reason why is because people are always staying indoors, and they never go outside. The last reason why is because kids are always staying in bed playing on their phones. These are all the reasons why technology is ruining people's friendships.…

In one study, researchers found that an amazing 94 percent of teens who have a phone use it daily. As an example, 76 percent of teens use social media. That shows that we are spending too much time online. In the article “Is Technology Killing Friendships?” The author Lauren Tarshis argues whether or not technology is ruining friendships. Considering all the friendships being broken because of the misuse of technology, it is clear to see that technology is ruining friendships. Teens might be missing out on genuine friendships because they are on the internet all the time. Teens are spending too much time alone texting when they could be hanging out with true friends. Teens also might mistake virtual…

However, the authors inform us that that is not the case. In fact, they state that most teens use social media for good and I believe that that is the most profound point of this chapter (p. 34). Even with cyberbullying being as prevalent as it is today, it is still not the norm, making the take home message from this chapter being that the benefits of social media outweigh the risks. These benefits include things such as giving teens a way to feel connected to their peers, a way to discover who they are as a person and what they believe in, as well as giving them a platform to express themselves that makes them feel as though they are being heard and taken seriously (2015). One quandary that teens experience is a desire to stand out and feel unique, while still desiring to fit in with their peers and feel like they are a part of the crowd; being a part of the smartphone society allows teens to do just that. While this chapter emphasizes how social media benefits teens, the authors surprisingly did not mention any specific instances of these positive experiences that teens have had. Throughout the chapter, they provide 8 different quotes from kids that have experienced the negative effects of social media; however, they did not supply any quotes for positive experiences. In a chapter that focuses on the benefits of a smartphone society, I…

In her article “Online Friendships” which appeared in an internet magazine Current Health 2, Jan Farrington talking about the advantages and disadvantages of online friendships. First of all, she lists how online friendship affects teens in real life. Teens spend a lot of time to connect with real-world friends online. Patricia Hersh, the author of A Tribe Apart, said online communicate is important in teen’s life. Second, it’s a good thing for teenagers to hang online. Researchers at Carnegie Mellon University found that online chatting is a useful way for teens to keep in touch with them real-world friends, and it can shorten the distance between teen and their friends. Also you can make new friends from internet. But life online is sometimes unfriendly, for example, rumors run away, and arguments exacerbate. However, Hersh said that teens will be more emotionally online than in real life, that is, cyberspace is a space where teens can be real themselves. Third, we need to be careful when we go online. Make sure that you won’t tell your private feelings with a stranger, and try to be sensitive with hurtful comments, to avoid bulling things happen. Eventually, a survey found that teens just spend a less time to contact with friends online. So author suggested teens to spend more times to keep up with friends in the future, and online is a convenient way to stabilize your friendship. Online friendship has some benefits for teenager, and it is important in teen’s real life, but teen should be careful when they use it.…

Technology has become an integral part of human society in the era where information sees no geographical boundaries and there is exchange of information with the help of use of various technological and communication tools. The advent of digital media has helped people reach developmental milestones, such as fostering the sense of belongingness and sharing personal problems (Donath and Boyd). However, there are questions related to the worth and value of use of technology in proliferating relations, such as friendship. The thesis of the research is as follows: technology has made friendships shallower specifically in the context of advent of social media platforms.…

I chose to do my research report over “Teens, Technology and Romantic Relationships” by Amanda Lenhart, Monica Anderson and Aaron Smith. The main idea or idea of this report is that social media plays a role in teens romantic relationships. It could be anything from dating, breaking up or flirting. Only 8% of teens have met their romantic partner online, but 50% of teens ages 13-17 have flirted or told someone through a form of social media that they romantically interested in them. I find this to show that technology is something that teens are using more and more not only in their everyday lives, but in their relationships as well. I find this true about myself as well. I would say I use a majority or my social media to talk to friends and family or to share what’s going in my life, but I also use it to find new friends or partners. Although technology is used to find a partner, it can also be used to breakup with a partner and may cause harm to the other significant other.…

Social media especially ruins much needed human interaction. Facebook and Twitter keeps children and adults alike glued to desktops, laptops, and iPads. Technology not only causes children to be physically unhealthy but socially unhealthy as well. It causes social isolation and keeps children consumed in “what’s new” in the lives of their “friends” or people they may not even know. Children should get to know one another the natural way – conversing with one another and…

What method people use to communicate with each other is changing every day. The days of riding across the country on a horse to send a page of text has been replaced by the click of a mouse. The everyday conversation between a boss and his employee has been replaced almost completely with “shooting them an email”. In addition to that, 71% of the current online population has a facebook and is currently in contact with most of the people they know (Social Bakers). How we can have the ability to contact anyone we desire at any time has only made the world a better place, or so it seems. The use of Social Networking and being able to communicate without seeing each other has ruined younger generations abilities to communicate emotionally and effectively in person. Even though facebook and other social communication platforms extend ones range of communication, It can have its negative effects. People cannot practice proper edicate when talking to people behind a computer screen. Its also much easier to be dishonest and do things that one would be too afraid to do if you weren’t hiding behind a computer screen. Society has vastly changed both good and bad with regards to communication through the development of technology over the past few decades. Communication among people has changed by our personal connections, our verbal communication skills, and by our global connectedness.…

While virtual communication has harmfully affected the social skills of people, children and teenagers are the ones being affected the most. In one article Bob Affonso recognizes that the over use of Internet has taken a stroll on people’s social skills. Research indicates that constant use of the internet results in small but significant increase in loneliness, stress and desolation and a decline in psychological well-being (qtd. in Affonso). Lately people waste most of their time in front of their computer or using their cell phones instead of spending quality time with their friends and family.…
