INTRODUCING SOCIAL SCIENCES
Outline how material things favour the activities of some groups of people over others on a street that you know.

In this assignment I will be discussing Alum Rocks Road in Birmingham in comparison to The Street in Cardiff. I will give my opinion on the street and how material objects have an effect on the population in the surrounding area.
Alum Rock road first recorded in 1718 is a very populated street; there is a mixture of shops, restaurants and other business, the road is predominantly surrounded by Asian clothing shops, loose material shops, jewellery shops, grocery shops, and has a large number of fast food shops. The road is used by people of all ages and ethnicities. Previously there were a number of pubs in the area that have now either been demolished or transformed into some sort of other business. The road also have a catholic primary school allocated towards the bottom, this school is a very multicultural school. The road has pay and display car park that was put in to place 2 years ago, in 2008-09 council traffic wardens handed out a staggering 3995 parking tickets over 12months. This giving you an idea of how busy the road is.
The road has a very mixed ethnicity, in the past Alum Rock was largely known as a home to a large Irish immigrant population now mainly populated by the Asian community. Over the years the roads has commercialized as many years ago, in my childhood, I remember how there were a lot of more franchised supermarkets such as Kwik Save. These were more commercially owned stores. That store today is still a supermarket, but it now owned by Al-Halal, this store is owned by …. The shop supplies fresh produces, from different countries, such as Bangladeshi, British and Pakistani fish, fresh fruit and vegetables, the store provides major branded products as well that are partially a lot cheaper than your local Asda or Tesco supermarket.
Even though Alum Rock road now has a predominantly Asian community, with a large number of

The common people are the first group to take their stance on the preservation of Lincoln Lane. “The residents, working like researchers, historians, anthropologists, archivists, and writers” (20) tirelessly fought to protect their home. For the residents, Lincoln lane symbolized their heritage and their pride. Of all the groups, they cared the most about the preservation of the lane, and they played the most simple role.…

One group of people City Road appears to cater more for is the younger student generation that prefer to go out in the evenings to socialise and this is demonstrated in the replacement of the car trade previously seen on the street with numerous restaurants and takeaways that open much later. Lloyd Robson describes the area as a ‘Magnet for young people’ (Making Social Lives DVD, scene 8) The older generation prefer to gather during the day in the Taste Buds café over a cup of coffee to maintain their traditional sense of community, but won’t visit the street at night when it becomes awash with students. This has contributed to the older generation feeling disconnected as, in the most part, they don’t want to visit a lively and loud bar or takeaway of which there are plenty and Bob Keohane confirms this when he states that ‘every other shop is a takeaway’ (Making Social Lives DVD, scene 6). The members of the Municipal Club, predominantly older men, tell of how they feel unsafe with more younger people on the street at night, despite numerous CCTV cameras, and how the club is unlikely to survive with the cycle of more students coming to the area, so more contemporary bars are opening to keep them coming, the less the older generation want to frequent the street in the evenings.…

Hounslow High Street is large shopping area, dedicated to pedestrians only, in comparison with City Road in Cardiff, which carries busy car- traffic and high competition between vehicles and pedestrians ('The Street’, 2009, scene 1). Traffic signs and street markings clearly indicate there is no entry for vehicles and there are several bollards to stop the traffic flow. The exceptions are buses, cyclists, mobility scooters and emergency services. Although the signs and street furniture are provided to benefit the street users, in general terms of giving information and guidance, it may be perceived also as potential hazard or obstructions by visually handicapped pedestrians or people on the wheelchairs. Traffic sings and street furniture are located primary at the centre of the footpath, which may limit the movement of the users and be experienced as threatening. In some circumstances it may lead to injury as most of them are painted in black, which makes them not clearly visible at night.…

Trying to combat this vehicle dominance naturally leads to inequalities between drivers and pedestrians. This is no more apparent than when we consider the everyday material objects located on the street. Rodney Berman explains how the high number of tall bollards are there to stop motorists driving onto, or parking on the pavement, how the islands have been put in the middle of the road, as well as controlled crossings, to help make it easier for pedestrians to cross, and how there are parts of the road painted red to stop motorists driving into certain areas (Material lives, 2009, scene 1). These examples show how social resources are distributed in favour of one social group over another, in this case to impose more control over the vehicles and therefore provide the pedestrians with more safety and…

I am writing to you today to request that my road, Knobatnight Lane in Ipswich, be made a priority in the future for gritting. As I’m sure you know the road itself is on the main bus route for our local secondary school, the prestigious Clive Warren’s Finishing School of Excellency, and I’m concerned that a lack of gritting during winter weather could possibly endanger people and their property or leave buses trying to continue down their route stranded.…
