The two tasks that were used will be referred to as the ‘phone’ scenario and the ‘file’ scenario. The ‘phone’ scenario involved participants being instructed to walk to the first floor of the Psychology department, collect a key that was placed in an envelope outside of the post room, and proceed to find a lockbox, which was located in the staff kitchen. A mobile phone was inside the lockbox, which participants had to return to the experimenter. The ‘file’ scenario followed a similar sequence of steps, in which participants had to use a USB stick in order to retrieve a file from a laptop, and return it to the experimenter. Similar to the ‘phone’ task, the ‘file’ task was located in the Psychology department, but on the third floor instead.…

On a cold Sunday morning, I conducted a short clinical interview with my friend Matt who enthusiastically agreed to be my test subject. Matt is a third-year advertising major here at UT-Austin. Because he is enrolled in the Moody College of Communication, he has only taken basic science and mathematics classes for non-majors. I chose to give him the question that divides a fraction by a fraction (1/5 divided by 2/3) because I personally had a hard time justifying why dividing by a fraction meant multiplying by the reciprocal. Therefore I wanted to see how someone with a different mathematics…

While interviewing I felt that I was being super aware when the client and I were talking. I noticed in the first interview that the client was fiddling with his fingers when talking to me. I feel that the client was doing this because they were talking about their feelings for the first time. Like I said earlier the client doesn't do this normally so they felt a little uncomfortable because this was something new for them. When it came to the second interview the client was leaning back in their chair and was way more relaxed when we were in the interview. I feel this was because they were more comfortable the second time because they knew what was coming.…
