Introduction of Assessments:
The assessments that I administered to the student began during my second week of practicum at the Francis Lore Elementary School, and were completed over the course of four weeks. There were a total of five assessments that tested my case study participant’s reading and writing skills. The Informal Reading Inventory, which had my student read multiple grade level passages and word lists, allowed me to measure their reading and comprehension level. The Elementary Spelling Inventory, aided me in assessing the students essential skills of phonics, which will indicate what aspects of writing will need to be approached come time for me to make recommendations and a plan for intervention.     Assessment is the ongoing, systematic collection of information on all students. Reading Assessment is one of the pillars of effective reading programs. Assessing reading skills can be very repetitive and can easily get boring. Many students dread to be tested especially the ones who struggle with reading. Finding new ways to assess students in reading will help not only you but more importantly the student. There are many different ideas in which you can assess a student in reading other than just by paper and pencil. There are many projects, games, and online software available. For my particular idea I chose to pick a game. I recently observed a classroom where the teacher used this particular game, and I realized how much the kids enjoyed the game while also learning. Dividing the class into a team to do a game is always a good idea because its take pressure off of weak readers. After dividing the class into two different teams, call on a student and hold up a flash card, then have the student pronounce the word. Make a tally mark each time the student pronounces the word correctly. By keeping up with who had more tally marks and rewarding the team who had more always helps encourage the children.     To start the literacy learner study, the student completed an oral reading fluency assessment. This was completed using DIBELS Next (Dynamic Measurement Group, 2013). This student read 22 words per minute with 73% accuracy. According to the DIBELS report, this student requires intensive instruction and scored in red on the assessment. Because the student scored in red, he had to complete an Informal Phonics Inventory (McKenna & Stahl, 2008, p. 125-131).     I chose to do my writing across the curriculum unit on oceans. I incorporated poetry into one of my lessons. I had students write an acrostic poem. I first modeled the poem using the spelling for fish. I wrote a sentence about fish for each letter of the word. After I model the acrostic poem, as independent practice, the students will create their own acrostic poem using the word ocean. As a formative assessment, I will confer with the students as I walk around the room. I will provide positive feedback to those who are on task and doing the assignment as instructed.     I first assessed the students using the school’s curriculum screening assessment (see Appendix G), as directed to by school staff. Then, based on the recommendations made by Roberts and Meiring (2006) I had the students complete a writing assignment so I could assess their writing Roberts and Meiring suggested evaluating an authentic writing assignment. I told the students to write a short story about anything they wanted to write about. I then analyzed students writing samples (see Appendix H). I discovered that the students all misspelled words that should be in their existing schema, such as sight words and high frequency words. The students also showed that they had little knowledge of spelling patterns including CVC and CVCe. To address this, I completed research to find what strategies have worked for spelling patterns for other students. I then stumbled upon Singleton’s article and found that Words Their Way worked in her classroom for students that showed data like the 3 3rd graders I was working with (2013). I then researched Words Their Way to get more information on the book and Templeton (N.D.) listed all the positives of this book’s strategies and why it should be used. I found that Templeton suggested using Words Their Way for intervention with students that cannot apply basic spelling patterns.
