Industrial Explosives, Blasting
Major differences between Site Mixed Slurry (SMS) and Site Mixed Emulsion (SME) Explosives

1. SME is in fact a plant made product (emulsion matrix) which need only to be sensitized by entrapment of gas bubbles either by, chemical gassing or addition of substantial quantity of porous ammonium nitrate (AN) prills, to form explosive.

2. SMS is truly a Site Mixed Slurry explosive in the sense that all intermediate ingredients (nearly five) are brought to field in a specially designed Pump Truck and are mixed in a predetermined ratio to form explosive when the mixture gets loaded in the bore hole. None of the ingredients or intermediates are explosives neither any of these can be converted to an explosive easily. (A major safety factor especially in disturbed area where anti-social elements are on lookout for explosives or ingredients of explosives, from any source.)

3. Lowest energy product say, base product, in both SMS and SME has energy of about 640 Kcal/kg. Every one percent addition of Aluminium to a base SMS product increases energy by roughly 40 Kcal/Kg. Thus a SMS product with say 5 percent Aluminium shall have energy of approximately 840 Kcal/kg. In case of Emulsions Explosive, energy increase is normally achieved by addition of AN in prill form. Every one percent addition of AN prill to the base SME product increases energy by roughly 5 Kcal/kg. Thus a SME product with say maximum of 20 percent AN prills (addition of AN prill more than 20% create problem in pumping) shall have energy of approximately 740 Kcal/Kg which is not sufficient to break very hard rocks like massive granite & highly abrasive quartzite existing at Malanjkhand Copper mine.

4. Thus, there is limitation of increasing energy in SME, making it un-suitable for very hard rock conditions whereas substantial energy increase can be achieved in case of SMS to meet the high energy requirement of very hard rock conditions. The SME technology is also not as safe for

The Centralia Coal Mine No.5 blast was a tragic and preventable disaster that according to John Martin, “no one stopped.” With only 31 survivors a total of 111 hard working coal miners lost their lives on this dreadful day which to most of them was soon approaching. There were many factors that contributed to this tragedy and several alternatives that Driscoll Scanlan, the state inspector, could have focused on in order to help prevent this as well. Those alternatives included focusing on; the lack of efficient timing in responding to recommendations, the lack of follow through in holding some entity responsible when those recommendations did not get addressed, the lack of setting professional boundaries between the owners of the Centralia Coal Mine No.5 and government officials, and the lack of accountability on the managerial staff at the coal mine. I will also briefly address Scanlan’s motivation towards the Constitution and bureaucracy.`…

In 1941, Congress authorized that the United States Bureau of Mine to conduct inspections periodically through the mines. During the same year, Governor Green appointed Driscoll Scanlan to become the Illinois state mine inspector. Scanlan went right to work and began inspections in his district, where he concluded that Centralia No. 5 was the worse mine condition within the district. On February 7, 1942, Scanlan wrote his first report on Centralia and found numerous violations and made recommendations. Every three months through 1942 to 1944, Scanlan inspected the mine while adding new recommendations. Those recommendations reported that the mine…

There is a fine line between holding on to something sacred to you and becoming obsessive over it. Nostalgia can be a beautiful thing. Afterall, it triggers a sense of happiness and bliss within the individual reminiscing on the past event or thing. Though in some cases nostalgia can be quite crippling to one's life. It can prevent an individual from being able to move on from the past as a result of the euphoric feeling it gives off. In the documentary, The Rock-afire Explosion, a man by the name of Chris Thrash is heavily focused on throughout the film because of his obsession over everything that involves the The Rock-afire Explosion. The Rock-afire explosion was an animatronic band that performed throughout the ‘80s for children at an…
