The first wave of migration started in 1959 when Fidel Castro took reign of the Cuban government by defeating Dictator General Fulgencio Batista. Many wealthy and educated white upper and middle class Cubans who were followers of the previous dictator General Fulgencio Batista feared that the sudden change in power would hurt them, so they started leaving Cuba and made their way towards the United States. This wave of the migration which lasted for 3 years, had approximately 250,000 Cuban immigrants leave Cuba for the United States. Many Cubans “temporarily” came to the United States during the first wave because they had a strong feeling that they would return to Cuba as soon as the United States intervened and removed Castro out of his powers. This particular wave of migration distinguished itself from others because many of the Cubans in the United States considered themselves to be “political exiles” rather than immigrants.…

Personal Connections: America has been described as a nation of immigrants. Do you know when your family migrated to the United States? Where did they come from? Why did they come?…
From the moment William McKinley was inaugurated into office, a looming Cuban insurrection was of concern. It would take quite a few circumstances to derail McKinley’s original opinion of advocating peace among the Spanish and Cubans into a plea for US involvement in aiding the Cuban rebellion. First and foremost, a major factor that spurred US involvement was the Spanish colonial policy in Cuba. As a response to some small Cuban rebellious upheavals, the Spanish established concentration camps for actively rebellious citizens in Cuba under the tyrannical control of Valeriano Weyler. After failing to provide for the captives, thousands died of hunger and disease which later gave Weyler the nickname “The Butcher.” Upon the exposition of Weyler’s inhumane tactics, many in the US began supporting intervention in order to free the Cuban nationals from the control of the Spanish. Additionally, due to…
Before 1850, Cuba was governed by Spain. However, the United States wanted to acquire Cuba for the following reasons. Firstly for commercial reason that is, Cuba would be a good market for American goods. Secondly, a slave state, planters form the Southern States of the United States wanted to acquire Cuba so that it would be made into a state where slavery could be continued. Thirdly, a military base, many Americans felt that Cuba could be used as a military base to protect Florida since that island was located only 149km away from the United States. Lastly, some Americans wanted to end Spanish rule in Cuba, they felt that the United States should replace Spain as the main country to govern Cuba.…
Communism is viewed as a defunct political philosophy. Western media likes to only convey the issues hidden within socialist nations. Socialist nations have thrived in the past and have had economic success similar to capitalist nations. The USSR industrialized rapidly and became a world superpower just in time for World War II. Cuba and Venezuela both adopted socialist forms of government that solved many of their social and economic issues. Fallacies have been found in the communist philosophy but similar issues are found in competing economic philosophies. The constant battle between capitalism and communism lead to the development of advanced technologies. Communism was a vital component of twentieth century reform and advancement as it…
The conditions for the mass immigration of Cubans were created in the late 1950s, when a Marxist revolution brought Fidel Castro to power. (Healey, 2010-2011 p. 374) The Cuban Revolution was a revolt against Cuban dictator Fulgencio Batista, who was finally ousted January 1, 1959. Before the 1950s, there was not much immigration from Cuba to the US, even during times of labor shortages. ( Perez, 1980, p.256)…
The Cold War, which took place from 1949 to 1991 was a very tense time between Soviet Russia and the United States of America (Trueman, What was the Cold War). Both countries were constantly at odds and willing to attack each other with nuclear weapons due to their differences in political, economic and social beliefs. While Soviet Russia believed that communism was the best social, political and economic ideology for the world to follow the United States believed capitalism was the best ideology and that communism was the enemy to democracy. Although the Cold War was a proxy war the differences between Soviet Russia and the United States caused the countries to begin battling for world domination. At this time, the United States considered…
The issue of immigration has many different views, on who should be allowed in or not, how hard it should be to get…
The Cultural Sanctions and Restrictions of Cuban Americans is very important to be able to learn about their ways of life. Cuban Americans have their own restrictions just as any other cultural group. The authors of Politics, Values, and Religion tell that abortion is a very important social issue to discuss. While only a few Cuban Americans have restrictions on abortion, the other half does not. “More than half (51%) of adult Hispanics say abortion should be illegal in most or all cases, a share greater than that (41%) observed among the general public.”…
Throughout this semester, we have been learning about different types of ethnic groups. From all the groups we have been looking at, the one that stood out to me the most is Cubans. Cubans have been migrating to the United States for many years now. All immigrant groups that migrate to the United States have their unique reasoning of why they leave their home country. The island of Cuba was a decent place to live on, until the politics, economy, and freedom came crashing down causing waves of immigrants of Cuba to appear in the United States…

Immigration is another one of these tremendous debates. People from all races, creeds and social standing have an opinion on the matter making it a fueled issue. Whether it is a personal belief that immigration is good or bad the matter is that it does exist. Not only does immigration exist; it will continue to exist as long as this country promises the opportunity for a better life. This is a debate that will continue to be fueled by media attention, personal and economic opinion. The question is not whether it is wrong or right but is there a resolution? This country has taken many steps to further the equality and opportunity of people. This subject seems to be no exception in terms of debate or civil…

Immigration affects many people. At first immigration was slaves coming over to work. At that time, it was african american slaves from Europe. Since then, many things have changed with the immigration process. In this century, immigration occurs almost completely because of war or political issues. It is vital to know why people immigrate, how it affects those around them, and things the immigrants possess or do not possess.…
