Identify Reports Into Failures to Protect Individuals from Abuse
Report one
Jimmy Savile – This is the latest case of a failed system to protect individuals from abuse. He was able to abuse children in his dressing room and on the hospital wards he used to visit. Nurses said they knew what was going on and told the children to pretend they were asleep when he visited.

A boy scout that was abused in Jimmy Savile’s dressing room said they were alone and when someone came in Jimmy Savile positioned himself so that the person could not see where his hands were and what they were doing.

There is a record to say that people did try to come forward and try to actually make some allegations and they were not believed because it was so difficult to believe that somebody with such status, power and authority would abuse this power and sexually abuse.

Although there is evidence of abuse occurring, Jimmy Savile passed away last year before this was raised. Therefore he is not here to defend himself so is unlikely to go to court but there is talks of his knighthood being stripped.

Report two.
Castlebeck, Winterbourne View, Bristol – The daughter of an elderly woman who was in the home grow suspicious when she noticed bruising on her mother’s arm just six weeks of being at the home. She took it upon herself to place a hidden camera in the room and secretly film what was going on. The film showed her mother who suffers from Alzheimer being slapped in the face, stomach and the arms. There was times when the woman (who also suffers from arthritis) was manhandled and was not greeted when staff entered the room, instead they put the television on and watched it while seeing to her. There was one time they put her to bed at 5:30pm, they never switched the television on for her they just left her lying in her bed until the next morning.

Despite three inspections in a period of two years – and several letters to management from whistle blowers and former employees – the atrocities went untackled until it was televised on BBC

Winterbourne View, a private residential home caring for those with learning difficulties, challenging behaviour and complex needs, was closed in June 2011 after a CQC inspection found that the registered care provider, Castlebeck Care (Teesdale) Ltd had failed to ensure that people living at Winterbourne View were adequately protected from risk, including the risks of unsafe practices by its own staff. The CQC inspection began immediately after they were informed that BBC Panorama had gathered months of evidence of serious abuse. The report published on Winterbourne View showed that Castlebeck Care (Teeside) Ltd were not compliant with 10 of the essential standards which the law requires care providers to meet:…

The Winterbourne case was reported nationally because it was such a disgusting mistreatment of vulnerable people, 11 members of staff were caught on cctv after visitors and patients complained about mistreatments. The evidence that was captured showed physical abuse such as, slapping, poking eyes, pulling hair, even as unbelievable as trapping them under chairs, and soaking residents in freezing cold water. It also showed emotional and verbal abuse in the form of name calling. This was an inhumane and diabolic mistreatment of vulnerable individuals unable to defend themselves. Winterbourne appears to have made dicisions based on profits and returns, over and above dicisions about the effective and humane delivery of assessments and treatments. Where were the staff who should have been reporting these crimes to management , if management was not listening then they should have been reported to the authorities and organisations, such as social services and cqc that is what they are there for. The staff who didn`t abuse patients but didn`t report the incidents are just as abusive and responsible , as they were employed to help with patients welfcare, in turning…

The removal of the Bill Cosby statue is just one stepping stone in the list of bad news involving this celebrated comedian. It has come to light through reports from over two dozen women that he assaulted them. He admitted contributing false responses and denials to serious allegations when questioned about them. While he continually voiced his opinion by brushing the allegations under the rug, taking the assault on his character lightly there is now proof that his actions weren’t pure or morally proper when it came to young women he once worked with.…

He raised money for the Spinal Unit, NSIC (National Spinal Injuries Centre), and St Francis Ward – a ward for children and teens with spinal cord injuries. Savile also volunteered at Leeds General Infirmary and Broadmoor Hospital. In August 1988, he was appointed by junior health minister Edwina Currie chair of an interim task force overseeing the management of Broadmoor Hospital, after its board members had been suspended. Savile had his own room at both Stoke Mandeville and Broadmoor. In 1989, Savile started legal proceedings against News Group Newspapers after the News of the World published an article, in January 1988, suggesting he had been in a position to secure the release of patients from the Broadmoor Hospital who were considered "dangerous". Savile won on 11 July 1989; News Group paid the legal costs, and he received an apology from editors Kelvin MacKenzie and Patsy Chapman. In 2012, it was reported that Savile had sexually abused vulnerable patients at the hospitals. It was reported that the civil servant who proposed Savile's appointment at Broadmoor was investigated by police and prevented from working with…

The effectiveness of the Military Whistleblower Protection Act of 1988 will need to be looked upon, as this Act was made in order to protect our military from retaliation for lawful communication. Whether victims in fact do fear reprisal from superiors and peers will also need to be verified. In order to make an informed analysis, the probability of whether removing the chain of command from sexual assault cases would in fact eradicate or reduce fear of reprisal from the victims without degrading the authority of the chain of…

    Catholic Church Scandal

Many advocates want change in how the Church and lawmakers deal with these cases in states. Zoll claims that the history of these cases date back to the 1950’s, but it wasn’t until 1980 when a case went public about a pedophile priest in Lafayette, Louisiana. Although scandals begin to surface about a number of priests it wasn’t until 20 years later, the Boston globe had a breakthrough when the reporters persuaded a judge to release private documents of the archdiocese in Boston. Once the files were released to the public, there was an outcry, the truth about the cover-ups were finally being heard. This undeniable veracity shed new light on how Bishops would look the other way and keep priest that had previous history in molesting children, to only transfer them to different parishes, causing a stir within the police force and parents within the Boston area. This caused the diocese to take inventory of how abuse cases were handled and the aftermath of the victims spanning decade’s prior. Since 2002 Zoll mentions that the bishops have spent “tens of millions on child safety”(Zoll), and the immediate removal from any subject that breaks the boundaries of child safety. Background checks have been mandatory on any priest, volunteer, teacher, or whoever is working within the diocese organizations. Since the 1950’s to this date it is estimated that “6,500 clergy have been accused of abuse”(Zoll), over “17,000”(Zoll) in the U.S alone people have fallen victims to this abuse throughout this ordeal. This number does not include other countries that have also faced the same abuse under the Catholic…
