I Want To Pursue My Degree In Biomedical Sciences
Being a first generation college student has proven to be difficult, however, that sparked my interest in biomedical sciences. Growing up, my family did not have ample recourses, allowing me to become practical. Fortunately, we did have access to a T.V. and I enjoyed watching educational shows at a young age. I became extremely interested in the Mars rover and would attempt to create my own with objects around the house. As I became older, my love for creating and science continued to grow. I began to attend my grandfather’s lung specialist appointments; I became fascinated with the functions of the heart and lungs. From then I made it a goal to learn as much as I could about those organs though books and online research. Also, while attending college I become interested in …show more content…
My background in the biological sciences is vast, since I have acquired numerous courses offered in the biology department. Also, while taking a multitude of classes, I was required to do a thesis. While working on my undergraduate thesis I was able to pick up on laboratory skills such a conducting electrophoresis and analysis, prepping cell cultures, and conducting PCR and analysis. As an undergraduate researcher, I was responsible for prepping yeast cell cultures and nutrient broths, reviewing results after each step, having a well written and organized lab notebook, and reviewing results with my advisor. Even though, the research on my thesis did not spark my interest, I enjoyed coming into the lab every day to learn new skills. The failures that I experience while working on my thesis allowed me to understand that research is about a multitude of failed attempts, and successful results yield from hours of work and commitment. This state of mind constantly motivates me currently during my year off from continuing higher

In school, I have enjoyed learning sciences especially when the topics are related to human conditions. Ever since learning about general biology in my junior high school years ago, I have on my own taken additional anthropology, psychology, anatomy and chemistry classes from a local college for further enrichment and have grown very fond of learning the complexity in human machinery and interaction. Occasionally I do find learning these topics too weighty to continue. Whenever that happens now, I would always manage to pull through by remembering that particular good day where I acted as 'an orthopedic doctor'.…

I have always been a person who has found herself torn between the love of chemistry and biology. The manner by which all natural schemes of the human body work and even methods by which they could be manipulated to create something desirable, to where one can produce the answers to someone's problem is such a powerful and a blessed ability. At fourteen years, I was a dedicated, immensely caring, and vibrant young lady with great dreams aspiring to become a medical doctor. For the final two years of secondary school, I successfully…

I can still vividly recall the eleven-year-old me fawning over the likes of Lawrence Krauss and Neil Degrasse Tyson. I was completely immersed in everything and anything pertaining to the vast universe beyond our seemingly insignificant world. I thought I had it all figured out. I would devote my life to being an astrophysicist and eventually earn my PhD. I would relish in the pink lettering on my wall that said “Dr. Mia”, but as I approach my late teens, my mind has been bombarded with what-ifs and buts. Irrespective of my change of heart, I still have an intense passion for math and science since it is how we explain the world around us, and that is why I have settled on biomedical engineering.…

I was introduced to the field I am interested in from my 9th grade biology class. Prior to the course, I had never taken biology or any science, for that matter, that had captured my attention such as this year-long experience. I was intrigued by the subject and fascinated with all the advances in society that have been made by scientists throughout the years. The possibility of being able to do this in the future kept me engaged and I further pursued this interest by currently taking AP Biology. In addition, I was inspired by the change that scientists can make through research and…

One of my most vivid memories from my childhood was the day I received a plastic toy stethoscope from my grandfather. Years later, I realize how it was not only a new plaything, but one that would inspire me to choose my future career path. While medicine is a tough field of study, I know that it is tougher still to toil the earth as my grandfather did in the hot indian summers. At his side after a long day’s work, I would help him at the night clinic he opened for free vaccinations. As I entered high school, I strived to embody such initiative and leadership by running for the Student Council and serving as Class Representative. Taking AP Biology and AP Environmental Science ignited my fascination about how living organisms and cellular systems effortlessly work together, grow, and adapt to their environment,…

There are two instances in my life that has inspired me to gain interest in medicine. My grandmother when I was around the age of twelve received double bypass surgery and I fell in love with the physician who took care of her. The physician was a middle aged woman who was one of the kindest person I have ever met, and she gave us the news of how everything went fine during surgery. She also gave us great confidence in how my grandmother would return to normal soon. The look on my parents and aunts face when she gave the news gave me goosebumps and to this day I feel the same goosebumps when I think about this. I just wanted to one day be in a position to deliver good news to a family and to see that “look” of relief on their faces. Another…

My interest in the health field dates back to when I was twelve years old. My grandmother had suffered a massive stroke and the left side of her body was paralyzed. From that very moment in our lives, I became very involved with the paperwork and the health of my grandmother. I have witnessed the effect on her as well as my family of her stroke, craniotomy, heart attacks, seizures, chest pains, amputation of her leg, therapy, to so much more. Yes, this was a huge impact on my life as a young individual, but it allowed me to mature. With the great guidance from my school and family members it was a part of my life that I was able to get through. Learning what she went through, translating the comments from doctors to my parents, and vice versa, and informing my grandmother and my parents what the use of each…

As a child, I decided to pursue an aspiration that began with a child’s doctors kit. I wanted to have a career as a doctor. I was on board with being dressed as the part; wearing scrubs, and always carrying a stethoscope. Looking back, today I would consider myself wise beyond my years. I wanted to help others feel better, or assist them in any way I could. A main characteristic of mine was being analytical. I am an equally observant and curious person. I desire to find out how the world works, or find solutions to problems. I consistently had questions about my environment. In pre-school, I got along with everyone in my classroom. I loved going to school for the fact that I was always able to learn something new. I’ve always been drawn to…

As a future student of IUPUI I am wanting to learn independence and teamwork. I want to be able to have hands on experience that I was unable to obtain during high school. Going to an actual college will allow me to be able to be with others, who take their work seriously and want to be at the college. Challenges I have had over my high school year has made it difficult to be attentive and made it where I had to go from school to school. Raised in a bad situation, caused me to have to move to two different high schools. This consequently caused me to fall behind miss school and lose my way of transportation to and from school. The school however helped me out with a ride and this made it possible to get back in fourth.
