Hurt Johnny Cash
I feel like Johnny Cash in his music video Hurt is using a lot of imagery and symbolism to demonstrate the remorse and sadness he feels. In the video, there was a part where it showed this woman crying, and it probably means that woman was probably hurt by him or hurt someone she loved. The part where it showed Jesus on a cross probably symbolizes the pain because being nailed to a cross isn’t pleasant at all. I found the video a little confusing because there was so much going on at once. I wasn’t really sure why Johnny Cash was hurt or why he wrote the song, and who is it directed to.

Redness and blood is often connected to religious imagery. In All The Pretty Horses by Cormac McCarthy, the spirituality of blood connects man with the landscape, horse, history, and his destiny. Thomas C. Foster’s How to read Literature Like a Professor makes reference to the bible in chapter 6. The Bible states that wine is often symbolized for the blood of Christ and is thought to be a spiritual cleanser. At the end of Part III, after John Grady had lost a lot of blood while staying in Saltillo Prison, he continues his journey back to Don Hector’s ranch after being spiritually cleansed. Chapter one sets the scene of the main character, John Grady Cole, attending his grandfather's funeral. In the evening, Grady notices that “the sun sat…

“The Ghost of Tom Joad” is a song about Tom Joad in the book The Grapes of Wrath. Through this song, Bruce Springsteen tells the story of Tom Joad traveling back home to Oklahoma after being released from McAlester Prison. He is like a ghost in the sense that no one has seen him in 4 years. He travels from the prison to his home in Oklahoma and on the way he runs into his former preacher Jim Casey. Tom and Jim continue on the journey to the Joad House, discussing life and everything that’s happened while Tom was in prison. Tom learns that Oklahoma is in a drought and that many families were forced to move because crops fail and there was no money to pay the banks. In the first stanza, Springsteen says, “Families sleeping in the cars in the…

Throughout the entire novel of John Steinbeck's “The Grapes of Wrath” many observations of “breaking” can be seen. From breaking of the characters will to carry on, such as the story about Toms curious uncle who couldn’t handle losing the one thing that I believe that was keeping the poor man going through all these tough times. Adding on top of the stress from all the loss of farmland, increasing debts and other such challenges John, Toms cousin, wouldn't listen to a call for help from his wife when she had pains in her stomach. When the loss of John’s wife came about you could see in the story he was telling that John’s character and wit had been destroyed with the loss, broken if you will.…

The beauty of the written word is that everyone can experience and interpret it in a different way with some help from writer and their purpose behind the piece. The beauty of songs is that people are free to express those individual interpretations in ways that allow them to use their voices and instruments. The beauty of video is that the makers can put these two things together and then add images and audio-texts to enhance the meaning of the song for viewers. The song “The Ghost of Tom Joad” has brought about multiple YouTube videos for this exact reason. In the video The Ghost of Toam Joad by Harveywetdog, the use of imagery definitely gave me a better sense of what this song is referencing. Nearly all of the pictures that slide across the screen were taken around the time of the Depression. Since that is the time period in which the character Tom Joad was living, this allowed me to understand the song and the lyrics in a more complete way. All the pictures of families and children frequently on the road and having nowhere to go really spoke to me about the world we live in today. It is a bit easier to feel for these people and the cause the song represents when you have a face to stick to it. It somehow makes their struggles seem more real. Harveywetdog gave me numerous faces to connect with and this only evoked more emotion in me because it causes me to really think about all of the people out there who simply want to live their lives, but are being held back due to the limits circumstance and money and society put on them. Pictures from the film The Grapes of Wrath that show Tom Joad with a quote printed on the screen also show up throughout the pictures whenever the singers say something about waiting on the ghost of Tom Joad, and they made it seem like he was there at the campfire light and was urging them to go on. I also found it very effective that Harveywetdog used actual clips of sound from the movie…

    How Has Johnny Changed

One character that has changed from the beginning of the story until now (i.e. Chapter 4-6) is Johnny. He went from being an innocent puppy that was scared to a younger version of Darry, being tough, cool, and knowing what to do in certain situations. He went from getting beaten up badly by his father, and Bob (once) to killing Bob, and running away from the Police. What caused Johnny to change was that Ponyboy was being drowned by David (a Soc) and Bob was going to kill Johnny after Ponyboy was dead, so Johnny reacted quickly and stabbed Bob and scared away the other Socs. Johnny stated that he never wanted to get beaten up like he did in that lot when Bob almost killed him, so he took action. In the text, it says “If you can picture a little puppy that has been kicked too many times and is lost in a crowd of strangers, you’ll have Johnny.” (Hinton Page 11) This was when Johnny was still scared of Bob and was depressed to the point of mentioning killing himself if he didn’t see any action (which kept him sane). This was when Johnny was protected by older Greasers (Dally, Two-Bit, and even Darry), although Darry wasn’t a Greaser he seems to care about Johnny, this was when anyone could push him around when he was quiet and kept to himself. Later on, in the text, it said: “But Johnny, except for the fact that his hands were twitching, looked as cool as Darry ever had.” (Hinton Page 57) This shows how quickly he changed because earlier that night when in the movie theater he was still shy when first talking to Cherry, but after this, he was a totally different person. It’s like there is a totally different side of him which…

Paternity and the relationship between the father and son reflects mutuality, correspondence, endearment, a test of masculinity, and the collaboration of men. Explored in many medium of literature, in specificity novels, such as The Road by Cormac McCarthy, Open by Andre Agassi, and Mudbound by Hillary Jordan, the kinship between male elder and male junior proves to be a testament of the complexity and fluctuation between love and hate. Dalton Trumbo, most notable for being blacklisted by the House Committee of Un-American activities for allegedly participating in the Communist Party, demonstrates this father-son complexity with envy, nostalgia, and bittersweet moments in his 1939 classic, Johnny Got His Gun. Moreover, the narrator refrains from using quotations or be specific in who is communicating to really engrave the audience and the narrator themselves in understanding the tension and somber now that his son is soon departing to fish with someone else. Through imagery, foil, character development, rhetoric, point of view,…

In the song you will hear unorthodox and sensitive methods of figurative language. “Flow like the blood of Abraham through the Jews and the Arabs, Broken apart like a woman's heart, abused in a marriage, the brink of holy war, bottled up, like a miscarriage” This line is layered with symbolism and similes. He cleverly uses biblical stories with emotional tragedy to describe the splitting of a nation with foreshadows of war. As a listener it’s hard not to feel emotion with this imagery.…

    Crooked Smile Analysis

In some music videos, the theme of the song and the theme of the video can have totally different meanings. The video for J Cole’s “Crooked Smile” starts with a man in a police car at night looking unhappy. Then it switches to a comparison of the routine of a drug dealer, played by J Cole, and a DEA cop. The drug dealer is cleaning the house for his daughter’s birthday party and the cop is getting ready for his day, eating breakfast with his daughter at one point. After the birthday party, the cops, including the DEA cop, began to invade the dealer’s house to arrest him. In the midst of the arrest, the dealer’s daughter comes out of her room and is shot and killed by an officer. Although the video deals with the war on drugs, the lyrics of…

The two symbols that stood out the most were living spaces and sickness. The living spaces of the families in the video were all extremely crammed and small. Since every family had multiple kids, it made these living conditions seem even worse. Barbara and Jean stood out because they were taking care of various kids and also other family members. The small living conditions symbolized how much they struggled but always did the best they could to support their family. Sickness is another symbol throughout the movie that kept coming up. Barbara and her son were sick in the movie as well as Jean and her daughter, Bridgette, who had cancer. Sickness can be considered as a symbol because being sick did not stop Bridgette or anyone in the movie in living and being strong. Bridgette has cancer and was not supposed to live past the year, but she was strong, and with the help of her mother she lived many more years than the doctors said she would. Therefore, it showed how life can be challenging, but with support and a family who cares, people can move forward from a bad sickness and tough…

Johnny was born during the economic crisis we now call The Great Depression. In order to keep their family sustained, Ray Cash moved the family to the Dyess Colony in Mississippi County, Arkansas (Dolan 33). The Cash family started a farm there where they grew many crops that they sold and lived on (Dolan 36). The Cash family rested on Sunday’s; this day they attended church services. The one part of service that young Johnny remembered liking vividly, is the songs the church would sing (Dolan 53). John Cash once said, “Those songs carried me away, and they gave me a taste of heavenly things” (Dolan 54). Between the hymns the church would sing, and participating in his older brother Roy’s band, Johnny Cash got his start in the music world. (“Johnny Cash” 2).…

In the first section of the song’s lyrics the atmosphere of sadness is laid down through the first piece of imagery showing loneliness; “She walks to school with the lunch she packed” and “Wearin’ the same dress she wore yesterday”. This atmosphere, from imagery of loneliness, continues on throughout the second and third section by the teacher seeing bruises and not saying a word about it, or the neighbors hear her cries in the night but don’t do anything as well and go back to sleep. Imagery of abuse is created by the lyrics in the first section from “She hides the bruises with linen and lace”, and the fourth section “Somebody cries in the middle of the night” and “A fragile soul caught in the hands of fate”. For the fourth section where it says “the hands of fate” there is a double figurative display, the first one being that thy personify fate as if to have hands, and the second being the metaphor they use to compare the young girl’s fate and beatings, being derived from the hands.…
