4th Branch Figurative Language
The 4th Branch
To stay in the loop with society and everyday events, most of us flip on the T.V. or radio. Not Immortal Technique, an activist and rapper. In his song “The 4th Branch “he states the media has corporate ties, which sets a fixed agenda and manipulated perspective. This is done with the use of a soft-melodic tune, bringing emotion upon his aggressive tone and message. With his emotional sound, Immortal Technique adds symbols, similes, and metaphors to create a connection with the listener.
In the song you will hear unorthodox and sensitive methods of figurative language. “Flow like the blood of Abraham through the Jews and the Arabs, Broken apart like a woman's heart, abused in a marriage, the brink of holy war, bottled up, like a miscarriage” This line is layered with symbolism and similes. He cleverly uses biblical stories with emotional tragedy to describe the splitting of a nation with foreshadows of war. As a listener it’s hard not to feel emotion with this imagery.

He brings up this experiment to show the capabilities of our nations technology and practices, to prove a controlled media is realistic. Also his side of early upbringings in class struggle comes into play. He mentions “they” (the media) want to change how people look at the ghetto. Considering he was brought up in poverty it is clear his beliefs of media creating a negative, worthless image of the ghetto, are
