“ Dad,I am taking it.” My dad said, “ Ok then do it.” But by the time I was ready to take the shot they all ran into the woods. So they ran off, then I was really mad that they ran away now because now I was even more ready to leave.

So again we were about to leave and all of the sudden two big deer came out and one was a 13 point and the other was a 16 point so we got our guns out and this giant came out of the woods. The giant brought with him two doe that were big too but the giant was the biggest deer i had ever seen. So I put my scope on that big thing and shot. The bullet hit him right in the brain for a drop and it died instantly.

So it ended up being a pretty good morning considering that me and Jesse have killed a deer so far. But right after I took the shot all the other deer ran off so I felt pretty bad for my dad. Then the 16 point I was going to kill came out and me and Jesse were packing our stuff up and then my dad laid eyes on him through his scope and shot. My dad hit him right behind the shoulder blade and it dropped right there when he shot

It is hard for me to admit that I'm afraid. Being a black woman in today’s society, I constantly feel the pressure to prove something. The pressure to destigmatize, and rise above—to be better than the ill-gotten images depicted of my race and sex. The pressure to carry the entirety of my race and sex wherever I go, yet still be an individual. Facing all the pressure to become the model “strong independent black woman,” I am hesitant to admit I am afraid because fear is seen as weakness. Picture a horse or deer with their stick-like legs shaking in fright in cartoons—the stark opposite of historically mightier figures like lions or jaguars which portray power and confidence. However, what one may forget is the legs of that horse help pull the weight of 400 pounds, and the body of a dear can annihilate a two-ton vehicle. So fear—or what looks like fear—isn’t always a bad thing.…
