Its 5:00am i just got up and got dressed in my hunting gear. i grabbed my gun and got into the truck where my dad was already waiting. He said, “Are you ready for your first hunt”. I said yes tiredly and we took off. when we arrived to the property we were hunting on we parked the truck and and walked to the hunting shed. When we arrived we opened the door and sat our chairs down. the hunting shed was a small box looking thing that our family have been using for around 40 years We waited and waited and then I saw something out of the corner of my eye. It was a doe i turned my head slowly and saw it about 100 yards away and thought is was a done deal. I picked up my gun and as I did I saw the deer running and by the time it stopped

so we did so. we arrived at my grandma’s, eat, and left and got back into hunting mode. but as we were, we look over and see a massive buck running across the field and then it jumped an 8 foot fence at a dead sprint heading right to our spot. We hurry back to our spot got set up and we hear splashing through the river. My dad looks back and says, “it's him”. I peek my head out of the shack and see this massive 12 point buck just standing there with 3 doe’s surrounding him like he was the king of the woods. Then I pull my head back in and i tell my dad, “thats definitely him”.I pull my gun around the side but i don't have a shot so i let my dad have the gun and try to shoot it because its the biggest buck he’s ever seen. but he can't get the shot he even tries left handed but it wont happen. then the deer caught our scent and ran. My dad got back in the shack and said,”so close”,and we packed up and left.but i wasn't sad. i saw the biggest deer of my life standing 10 yards from me. sure i didn't get the shot but i did get to experience seeing a buck that

The first hour and a half we listened to the birds and watched the squirrels eat away at the trail mix. The sight of this made me hungry so I got out my peanut butter sandwich and red Gatorade. Around 4:45, I was lightly sleeping when I heard a loud snap from a few hundred yards away. My mind began racing as I tried to figure out what could have made that noise. Every couple minutes I could hear another branch break and it was getting closer and closer. An hour later the noise had moved from a few hundred yards in front of us to less than 30 yards behind us. “Don’t move” my dad whispered. We could hear leaves crunching under the feet of whatever was behind us. The noise continued onto the path that leads right to the bait pile. I slowly turned my head to the left and saw a 325-pound bear with a furry, black coat. Instantly my breathing became heavy, my whole body was shaking and my heart was about to pound out of my chest. I grabbed by gun and raised it to my shoulder, almost dropping it from all my shaking. I rested my Remington pump shotgun on the chilly aluminum edge of the Rivers Edge tree stand. “Click” I took the safety off of my shotgun and looked down the iron sights. The bear was licking the frosting on top of the white cedar log. BANG! The bear spun and took off into the thick green underbrush and fell after 20 yards. I couldn’t believe it; I was so excited. My dad and I waited 30 minutes and then we got down from the tree stand and followed the trail to where the bear was laying. I reached down and touched the smooth, plush coat of the bear, thanking it for the meat it would provide for my…

I should’ve known something was wrong when the dear fell into the road on my way to the top of the Roan. I was driving along the rough road up the Roan, when out of nowhere, what appeared to be a yearling doe fell from the top of the Plateau and started running at full speed down the mountain. I assumed the doe had gotten a late start and was trying to catch up with her herd, but it had a primal fear in its eyes that I thought was brought on by the unexpected sight of me in the truck. This was odd because deer aren't…

As we get closer we see nothing we look around a bit and there was still nothing before we go back to the truck Matt checks around more and spots a deer lying on the ground. When I had shot it it had died almost instantly and there must have been a deer that was next to it that we didn't see and it was that deer that ran into the woods. We clean the deer then drag it a few yards to the truck and put it in the back. We drive to the nearest store and buy a few bags of ice and stuff them inside of it to keep it cool during the night.…

It was sunday, the end of deer season. After an unsuccessful morning hunt we were left with one more opportunity. We would have to start hiking a couple hours before dusk until dark. We hopped in the truck and drove slowly, our eyes scanning the brush for signs of movement until we reached a rusty yellow gate where only foot traffic was permitted. We continued on foot. Eventually the sun began fading behind the mountain and visibility became lower. My dad told me to wait a fork in the road and he’d be right back. Time came to a standstill, it felt like hours had passed when it was only minutes. I was tempted to yell his name but voices are one of the main things that scare off deer. I was on the verge of panic, anxiety and worry building up…

We pointed the gun, and bam, my first deer was down, this was when I knew that this place was going to be a special place to me. Growing up, going to deer camp with my daddy was always a very exciting thing for me. Hopewell was practically where I grew up; the dusty dirt roads, beautiful and quiet backwoods, deep mud holes, wild animals, friends and family made that place a home for me. Most people wouldn’t really consider their deer camp as their safe place and I guess that’s what makes me different from others.…

I threw my bait back in along the opposite bank, hoping to snatch the big one. Reggie threw in his line and we both sat there and talked for about an hour, then Reggie got bored so he reeled his line in, threw his bait out into the river and went down the bank and started messing around in the sand. I later got bored myself so I climbed down and started digging a tunnel in the sand without even thinking to reel my pole in. We were messing around in the sand, making an underground tunnel when I heard a splash, I looked up and saw my pole flying over our heads and into the water. I raced after knowing it was a huge catfish and it was taking my dad’s best pole. I kept stepping on rocks, holes and weeds and they were tearing my feet up, but I had to get that pole back. It was around 100 yards before I caught my pole, I grabbed it and pulled up to set the hook. I knew this fish was big it just kept pulling and pulling out the drag. Then I pulled up and started reeling when the line went slack I thought the line popped so I just stood there, then Reggie showed up and I told him the line popped so I started reeling then the pole flew down and went with it into the water. I felt like I was flying down stream when I hit a bank and pulled the pull back and stood…

Growing up in the Deer Run area I detested wilderness. I went to an elementals school by the name of Pete Gallego; it is located on the outskirts of Eagle Pass and we didn't have to go far to see vast wilderness. To the students of Pete Gallego Elementary, wilderness was a barren wasteland that only homed rattlesnakes and hares. We saw it every day at recess; there were mesquite trees, more mesquite tree and believe it or not a few hundred more mesquite trees. They weren’t even the green ones; they had this dirty grey hue to them, as if they had been bleached by years of children’s tears. So when my sixth grade teacher gave us the project of, “take time out of your day to look at and appreciate nature.” I was livid; I was not going to walk around this desert and risk my life to appreciate sadness and sorrow. Little did I…

Then my Dad walked up next to me and told me that I had passed out in there yard. He wanted to know who I was. I was shocked at first but eventually I told him that I was in town visiting my family in the neighborhood. When I walked out of the house I realized that the flashlight had brought me back in time to the day my parents were killed. My parents will be killed again tonight if I don’t stop the criminal that did it. That night I waited for the car to park next to the house. I snuck behind the car and when he got out I shined the flashlight in his eyes which blinded him for a few moments. That gave enough time to swing the hardest punch I had ever thrown. I hit him so hard it knocked him out. I grabbed the gun that would have killed my parents and threw it as far as I could from the house. Taking one last look at the house, I shined the flashlight on the ground next to me. The numbers appeared again and I picked the day that would bring one back to the present. I saw a flash of light and I was back to my house. My phone started ringing and I answered it. I heard my mom’s voice. She asked me if I wanted to meet her and my dad to eat lunch this afternoon and catch up. I just smiled because I realized that I had saved…
