The vampire fish. That is what the Sea lamprey was nicknamed when discovered in 1835. First spotted in Lake Ontario, researchers were horrified to learn that the Sea lamprey feeds on blood. These parasitic fish latch on to their victims and siphon their blood and other body fluids, sucking them completely dry. What separates the Sea lamprey from other fish, other than their horrifying blood fetish, is their unique body structure. These fish do not have jaws or any other bone structure in their anatomy. Instead of the norm they possess a skeleton that is made out of cartilage. With a unique body set up, comes a unique mouth. It is described to be a large hole filled with sharp, pointy teeth. And this teeth frame a just as deadly tongue.…

The passage discusses three possible reasons for strange noises, name "quackers", that Russian submarine sailors had reported during a period of time from the 1960s to the1980s. The author mentions three sources for these sounds, including nearby Orca whales vocalization trying to attract mates, the giant squids which live in the ocean and finally the undetectable foreign submarines. The professor, however, believes that none of these theories could justify the real source of these noises. The professor's reasons to refute these theories are as follows.…

It was a hot and luminous afternoon: we were preparing for a long, three-year voyage to find a grand fortune in the greatest maritime sport, whale-hunting. Nothing else was in my mind, except for the journey; it was like any other day until a young, flamboyant lad named Ishmael approached me for a spot in the Pequod. He did have some experience with commerce ships; however, this would be his first “whaling” trip. Immediately, I was furious at how he put up “the merchant service” as a credible sailing experience. Usually I would say, “No” to rookies, but there was something different about his tone and character -- his persuasion, persistence, and curiosity. Rare traits in select men; however, I admit: I tested the novice to see whether the boy was worth his salt, so I…

One of the most memorable books of my childhood is called “The Rainbow Fish”. In kindergarten, we read this book almost every day. I don’t know why I liked this particular book so much. Was it the colorful pattern the book cover had? I just don’t know. I thought this book was the most amazing book I ever heard of. Sitting in bed every night, waiting on my mother to come tuck me in and read me a bedtime stories. When she finally came, she would walk towards my bookshelf to grab a particular book every night. On November 20, 1820 the crew of the Essex spotted an unusual sight, an extremely large bull. The men estimated it to be about eighty-five feet long and weigh approximately eighty tons. However it was not only the large sight of the whale that alarmed the men, but it was its strange behavior. "Instead of fleeing in panic, it was floating quietly on the surface of the water, puffin occasionally through its blowhole, as if it were watching them. After spouting two or three times, the whale dove then surfaced about 35 yards from the ship (81)." After diving the whale began to do the unspeakable it began to charge the Essex, "Its twenty foot-wide tail pumped up and down slowly at first, with a slight side to side waggle, it picked up speed until the water crested around its massive barrel shaped head. It was aimed at the Essex's port side (81)." Upon noticing that the whale was going to ram into the ship the captain gave the order to "pull the helm hard up" to prevent a direct hit however the order was given to late the whale it the ship, "The Essex shook as if she had struck a rock. Every man was knock off his feet …we looked at each other in perfect amazement (81)."…
