Humber River Hospital Personal Statement
1. Please share your reason for wanting to join the Volunteer Program at Humber River Hospital:
I want to join the Volunteer Program at Humber River Hospital for many reasons. Firstly, I really love helping people and I feel like getting an experience in this program could really allow me to express my full potential to make a person’s day better. I want to do everything I can to contribute to my community. I also want to go into the medical field someday and I really think this program is the best place to start. I say this because it will give me the chance to interact with different types of patients and visitors which will allow me to expand my communication and problem-solving skills. It would also give me a taste of the hospital environment. I also believe that I have the skills it takes for this program because I have many volunteering experiences like: at my elementary school’s summer camp, running high school events and at the Gibson House Museum.

2. Please indicate the characteristics and qualities you wish to share.

I would love to share my communication skills with this program. Not only that, I believe that I have determination and I am persistent in getting the job done even through tough times. I am driven to learn new concepts and idea and am able to work well with others. I am also

I’ve always wanted a job in the medical field and this career really caught my eyes. I love kids; and being able to help save a life with my growing knowledge and experiences could really make a difference. And giving a kid a second chance of life filled with happiness, excitement, and determination; it is just a great thing to imagine. What if the child I end up saving grows up to make a big scientific breakthrough? That would only be possible if there are more pediatric surgeons in the world where kids could get the chance of a long healthy

I have always tried to advocate for the underserved members of our communities, and I believe I could pursue this passion through the Magis Clinic. In the past, I have shown that I am able to schedule and train volunteers, and believe I can effectively do this moving forward. In addition, I believe I could effectively work in the Magis Clinic environment. I shadowed at the Barnes-Jewish Emergency Room (WashU affiliated hospital) as an undergraduate. Most of the patients that came into the emergency room were uninsured and used the emergency room as a source of primary care. Furthermore, we also saw many psych patients, people attempting to acquire narcotics, and patients choosing to self-medicate as a coping mechanism. I was able to effectively communicate with these patients, which can partially be attributed to growing up in many different environments including Japan, Cleveland, Rochester, and St. Louis. I feel comfortable in both an organizational role, as well as a teaching role in which I would show new members the ropes of the Magis Clinic. Furthermore, I plan on staying in Omaha over the summer, and volunteering at the Magis Clinic, which would help me transition into a leadership role going into my second year at…

In my UWMC volunteer application statement, I explained the reasons why I'm passionate in volunteering: because of my experience with hospitals and nurses, I developed strong interests in hospital setting, roles of medical staff, and the magnificent human anatomy. After working as both an escort volunteer and a postpartum unit volunteer for over 100 hours, I am finally confident to say that my intuition led me to the right path. Being able to transport patients between different units gave me opportunities to communicate with them, to help them with their needs; while being able to work with nurses helped me building my understanding of the hospital system and unit setup. These two roles not only offered me an opportunity to have both general…

For some reason, I always go into things with a negative perspective, it’s somewhat of a defense mechanism. My experience as a UCSF Mission Bay Volunteer completely diminished this defense mechanism. At first, I questioned volunteering at UCSF Mission Bay Hospital. I questioned if delivering newspapers and hot beverages would have any effect on patients. I was also scared and sad by the thought of being in the hospital each week and seeing how sick and upset people are. The main reason I wanted to become a volunteer was to gain an experience in the medical field. Little did I know, I would gain a lot more from being a UCSF volunteer. I never really thought I would form relationships with patients, visitors, and staff.…

As I have gotten older my goals have shifted to and from many professions that have caught my interests. The recurring theme was always children and my ability to help them. I gave serious thought to pursuing a teaching position, or a few different types of attorney that would put me in the position to help children making questionable decisions, or becoming doctor. I realized my dream of becoming a pediatric oncologist a few years ago when I became interested in oncology and then realized I could combine two of my passions, children and cancer. While I am aware that pediatric oncology is a tough, demanding profession I want to be a part of it because of the opportunity it presents to make a difference and help people. It seems especially rewarding…

Since the start of my clinical experience, I have found something to love in every specialty of medicine. Whether it is the cynical nature of surgeons or the broad based knowledge of internists, I wanted to be a part of it all. My favorite part of each specialty was the interaction and relationship I was able to form with every patient. However, I always found myself gravitating towards the pediatric population, particularly the adolescents. Whenever I saw a pediatric patient during my clerkships, I had this inner feeling of exhilaration. That feeling…
