Ballad of a Soldier (1959)
By. Grigori Chukrai

The movie “Ballad of a Soldier” is about a 19 year old boy named Alyosha who accidentally shot two of the enemy tanks during a war and because of that, he was given the chance to go back home and visit his mother. While he was travelling back, he met some people and one of them was a girl named Shura who then later fell in love with him. And at the last part of the movie, he finally met his mom despite of the challenges he had been through going back home and even if their meet-up was just for a limited time only, both of them enjoyed each other’s company and his mom ensured him that she will wait for his return while Alyosha also promised her mom, that he will return to her after the war. The movie was very touching because even though the son-mother scene was not quite shown in the entire movie, the scenes were very uplifting. We can see Alyosha’s positivity and dedication in his work throughout the movie even in the war scenes which I think sends us a message that we should always be looking on the positive side of everything so we won’t get too much unhappy and it also shows the importance of being contented and in love with our own job. Lastly, it shows that a child and mother relationship is almost unbreakable.

The movie really highlighted the importance of mother figures and there importance of child development. There is a huge difference how my country raises children and how other countries raise their children. Every person in the world comes from a mother figure in their lives and will live their own lives. However there is a difference on how we live our lives and how we act when we are raised by that mother figure.…

Grigori Chukhrai’s Ballad of a Soldier portrayed a perspective on healthy sexuality that was considered liberating for the time period. After Alyosha cleverly disguises Shura in his military coat and hat, they both make it onto the train. As the train is moving forward, Alyosha and Shura laugh with one another until smoke fills the screen and initiates a dissolve into an intimate space that belongs to them. At first, there is a melancholic tone to their intimacy perhaps acknowledging the fact that they will not be with one another much longer. However, their infatuation is no match for the circumstances and they both fall in love. The romantic score dominates the soundtrack as the sound of the train is no longer existent. As Alyosha and Shura stare at one another, the director choses to use an extreme close up while fading out with a dissolve into another romanticized close up of Shura. Masked by the intercut shot of the train moving, these close ups and the final two shot of the couple seem to be filmed in a studio to create a suitable romantic dream like atmosphere with the use of specific lighting.…

I thought the movie was moving, empowering and touching. One part that was really emotional for me was when the one lady was telling a story about a woman who witnessed her husband being killed and her daughter being rapped. Anyone who can go through that much pain, disaster and hardship is a strong individual. If I were in their place I don’t know how I would be able to go through all of that day in and day out and there never be a hope of it getting better. Those women though they stuck it out and prayed so much that things got better and that just shows how amazing all of them are. This movie is one…

In Exodus 34:6-7 we see that the Lord himself describes his character to Moses, “The Lord, the Lord, a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness,7 keeping steadfast love for the thousandth generation, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, yet by no means clearing the guilty, but visiting the iniquity of the parents upon the children and the children’s children, to the third and the fourth generation.” This is what I have been taught since I was young and I believe what it says. However, in further reading and paying closer attention I begin to reflect on how God’s goodness can be followed by suffering to his people.…

This movie made me reevaluate my life, it made me wonder about the things I was ungrateful for, for all the things I take for granted: sleeping on a mattress instead of a floor, having more shoes than I need, and having money to spare on trivial things like ice cream and whatever else caught my fancy. The movie showed me to appreciate the life I was given, and to show sympathy to the less fortunate, to never turn a poor man away, because he may have faced the same problems those children faced.…

I did not expect to see what I saw and this performance completely changed my view of dancing/dancers, drummers/musicians/composers...artistry in general. The overall performance was good, but it were the little things, like having good posture and form while playing or dancing, or the use of instruments and lighting, that made it great.…

I have been a student in San Diego Miramar Community College for five semesters. I started in ESOL 20 until I reached in English 48 and 49. I learned lots of things every semester. I learned how to write a research paper and do academic journals. I enjoy doing the academic journals because it was an interesting way to write anything that is in your mind. However, the research paper was horrible because it was very difficult for me to put all your information together to try to make an argument that need to be cited if the information was not mine. This class has built up my confidence in my own writing and for that I am highly appreciative.…

‘Reflection is an exploration and an explanation of events’(Queen Margaret University 2013:1). It is an essential part of our study in this semester. Many experts indicated that study from feedback is an effective way to improve ourselves. OpenLearn, (2015) On the one hand, I received many feedbacks from my teachers. Theses feedbacks were about the PDP essay, which I got an unsatisfied grade. Writing references is the biggest problem for me because I often make mistakes of the format of Harvard referencing. For example, I often forgot to put the citation in the body part. In addition, the teacher also pointed that there were many grammar mistakes in my assignments. On the other hand, I also received informal feedback from the group presentation, which means teacher pointed many things I can improve more than just mistakes and these were not counted towards my final grades. Although I was nervous in front of the public during my presentation. My teacher said my pronunciation is very good, which improve my confidence to some extent.…
