I have been a student in San Diego Miramar Community College for five semesters. I started in ESOL 20 until I reached in English 48 and 49. I learned lots of things every semester. I learned how to write a research paper and do academic journals. I enjoy doing the academic journals because it was an interesting way to write anything that is in your mind. However, the research paper was horrible because it was very difficult for me to put all your information together to try to make an argument that need to be cited if the information was not mine. This class has built up my confidence in my own writing and for that I am highly appreciative.
First, I know that my ability to write and express my ideas, thoughts and knowledge has grown stronger each semester. I have always struggled to put my thought on paper in a manner that is coherent. In fact, I remember when my English teacher back in high school said to "organize your thoughts" or "provide more support and examples". Furthermore, these are the things that I have worked on and improved in this semester. The paper that I wrote is about social media affected students in their school. In this essay, I formulated my own ideas and need to research to support my ideas. Therefore, the classes I have taken the past couple semesters have really help me shed that bad habit and write better papers with better ideas. Also, I have learned how to write various styles of papers in different forms and different fields. I feel confident that I could write a paper about most anything and know how to cite and format it properly.
Secondly, another assignment that was completed for this class was the timed writing about the DREAM Act, which I didn’t know about. This essay I didn’t finish it because I didn’t use my time wisely. Also, I am not always confident to ask clarifying questions when I should. If I have a confident foundation of knowledge then it becomes easier for me to get my ideas out on that essay. Besides, making

When writing an essay there really is more to it than just writing words down and making sure the words is used correctly. When someone is having thoughts they need to write them down and just go from there. At first it may not be perfect, but the writer can always go back and change the errors that need to be fixed. Before reading this I figured it was going to be about bad writing and one should not worry if it is not perfect. This made me realize that it is not about how you write, but what you write about and how to get your thoughts across.…

What I need to do to improve and how I plan to do this: In future, instead of getting paralysis, or worrying that what I am writing about is not valid, I need to use what knowledge I have, back it up with theory and be confident that this is what’s needed. It would be better to get an essay in on time, than delay submitting it due to worry that it isn’t ‘good enough’.…

When I started this class, I believe I had strong writing skills, and now I believe these skills have strengthened, making me a more conscious writer. Before this class, I have not focused on aspects such as sentence length and specific words that I am using. Instead, I simply wrote and worked on proper grammar. My essay writing skills have definitely improved throughout this class simply due to the fact that I spend more time writing my essays. Now that I have mastered more skills, I can utilize them in every essay from here on out. While I know that I still have room to improve, I am pleased by my progress and I feel more confident about my writing. I have always enjoyed writing essays, but this class has helped me more fully understand the complexities of writing an essay. Previously, most essays I have written have been standard for English classes, and…

We had to write from narrative essays, to persuasive essays, to argumentative to reflective essays. This course expanded my knowledge of how to write different kinds of essays because each type of essay has to be written in a certain way with a certain tone. For instance, in my persuasive in class essay Without a Saddle, I had to persuade the audience that youth learn either through experience or promoting cautiousness through restrictions. I thought I was good at writing persuasive essays before but now I learned how to persuade so that the audience can understand my point of view. And after understanding what Professor Anderson is trying to tell me, I revised my paper into a well developed essay. I have noticed that I developed a better and a not so broad thesis, and I have clear transition sentences. That makes the reader understand what is going on and to keep the reader…

Reflection allows an individual to identify the reasons or purpose of understanding the outcome of a particular situation in depth in term of emotions on thought and feeling on the topic area. In addition, Reflection is something that we do implicitly as part of being human, underpinning our identities through a process of negotiation between our sense of self and our experiences of others (Demetriou, 2000, p.210). During this semester I feel that I have made many improvements to my writing process and the way I structure my papers. I now start by thoroughly researching a topic create and creating a detailed outline of all the ideas that I want to include in my writing. As this course progressed I found that techniques that I once found hard to incorporate into my writing were becoming more easy. An example of this is my addition of commas when they are needed, before I used to add commas when I was editing. This course helped reinforce the principles of writing that I knew and helped make them easier to put into my writing. My favorite part of this course was the in book assignments, they helped put the lessons into practice before having to write…

I have always enjoyed writing; however, I have never enjoyed the process of writing as much as I do now. Entering this semester, I felt confident in my skills as a writer and did not expect to learn as much as I have. Each class, I found myself learning new skills to apply to my writing. I think the most important thing I learned this semester is that writing does not have to be a daunting task and that writing is about what one does with the knowledge he has.…

A good essay needs good ideas. By idea generation, I mean that I have learned to think fast and get ideas quickly for my essays. One thing that has really been a challenge for me at the start of the semester in English 5, was getting material and ideas to use in my essay. While doing my essays, I have to see that typing freely works to generate ideas and brainstorming helps to get my ideas clarified. In addition, I also have noticed that making a rough draft has helped me to develop my ideas and also organize them. Now I always start my essays with ideas generation and a rough draft.…

Before transferring to Georgian Court University, I had already attended two other colleges. I lived in a dorm my freshmen year at Ramapo and decided that was not for me. After leaving Ramapo, I decided to take a few semesters at Brookdale Community College in order to fulfill some requirements while deciding where exactly was the right place for myself to continue with my education. After searching through many brochures and getting first hand details about schools from people I am acquainted with, I was overcome with joy when I found Georgian Court. Since I am double majoring in both English and Education, it is hard to find schools that offer the two as a pair as well as offer the special endorsement for teaching students with disabilities. Georgian Court is also one of the top teaching schools, with a very high rate of job placement after graduation, which was another thing that captivated me. The economy is very unpredictable at this point in time and it is only plausible to choose the very best school to go to that is well known for the extraordinary practices in the field of study you want to pursue. Here at Georgian Court I have found everything I have been looking for.…

Ever since I was young, writing has never been my strong point. I never divulged into the writing process as much as I have completed for this particular course called writing 101. The reason being, English was never my first spoken or written language. I am comfortable with speaking the English language however writing correctly and adhering to the writing process has always been a challenge for me. For once, I never had a clear idea of structuring an essay to reach a valid point. Without structural organization, all the essays I have written so far lacked the impact that good, strong essays usually show. However within this course period, I have obtained many skills that divulges into writing a good, strong essay or any writing pieces for that matter. I began this course with very basic writing skills; now I have acquired intermediate learning skills through using pre-writing, good grammar knowledge and transition words.…

I would like to start off by saying that this class has greatly improved my writing skills. Learning the other side of the thinking process was great. I came across some challenges, but seemed to overcome them the more I wrote and practiced throughout this semester. These skills I did learn will help me continue to grow, and take control as I travel my future educational roads. So far this class English 101 has been motivating and interesting for me. Some of the topics that we covered was the cyborg theory. I am a bit on the rusty side with using citations and quotations properly, but I know I have improved quite a bit in a short period of time while working on writing papers this semester. My biggest success, in my opinion, would be my unique writing style writing in ways that I have never written before or helped evolved my brain in another level of success, and my ability to use a broad vocabulary. Since I have been in this class my vocabulary has really improved I have used some words that I normally wouldn’t have used in high school. While writing my essays the biggest challenge that I have run into is using terms and quotes from other sources to back up my main points and explaining the quote. Before I came into this class I had a little understanding of how to place my quotes, but after learning from TSIS has really giving me a jumpstart to what I need to know about templates and inserting quotes from my sources. TISI has helped me make a huge improvement not only in my writing but has given me a better understanding then what I have had before in the English department. The movies in this class have affected me more than I had anticipated in a good way of course. I have never used a movie as one of my sources and this semester I have improved by learning how to do so. Reading about the cyborg theory has been interesting covering aspects and situations in life that could or could not happen, but it leaves a lot of room for the realization of…
