This service learning project extends the Salvation Army’s ability to address the possible ways to increase the number of young adult volunteers and to promote the awareness of the Salvation Army’s mission and services. Moreover, the project creates opportunities for the Salvation Army to shape where they are standing on the community recognition. It can increase the visibility of the organization in the community or service area.

One of the weaknesses of the project is the interaction with the Salvation Army regarding identification of their needs and problems. Service is a passion of mine and I love to volunteer in my community through various service clubs, and scholarship pageants. At church, I've been the President of my Youth Group and a Volunteer Assistant Counselor and Staff Assistant for two years at our church girls’ summer camp. For nine years, I've been a Girl Scout and completed service projects that allowed me to earn my Bronze and Silver Awards. Now, I am working on my Gold Project, putting together a pamphlet with information about our support group campout and other resources for the Exstrophy community, which I plan to distribute…

Volunteering is something that can happen at all ages and each different age group has something that is important to offer when they volunteer. In volunteering the different age groups are broken down into five distinct generation cohorts (Connors, 2012). By breaking down the different ages into these generational cohorts it allows those working with the volunteers the opportunity to recognize the different strengths and characteristics that the different ages bring with them to the volunteer opportunity. The five different generational cohorts include the Greatest Generation or those that were born prior to 1926, the Traditionals or Silent Generation those that were born between 1926 and 1945, the Baby Boomers those that were born between…

I knew that they collect and spread resources throughout the community. What I did not know was that they provide opportunity for people to complete community service as part of a sentencing. They do not just give them work to do but counsel and advocate for them as well. One of the people that I worked with when I volunteered was convicted for drug abuse. He had to do community service to meet his sentencing requirements. He also had to do drug counseling. The Major at the Salvation Army works with these people to help them get off drugs and become a productive member of society. I also worked with a few young men who were completing high school through an alternative school program. Then there was Major Carol and I working that day. It was nice to see such a diverse group of people working together to benefit the less fortunate in our community. It was our job to sort and organize food for the Christmas Baskets and the food pantry. They have close to 300 families on their list this year from Marinette and Menominee who will be receiving baskets this year. It is amazing that by volunteering 3 hours one Saturday morning; I will have affected the lives of that many people on Christmas this year. The volunteer assignment experience relates to the theme of our course by showing us that there are less fortunate people in our community and it is the responsibility of everyone in the community to…

Being a big sister I have always been introduced into the basics of how to take care a children. For my senior project I chose the self-development option where I took a class at WITC on “Intro to Child Care.” The class had a Pass/Fail grading system. I decided to take the class as my senior project to expand my prior knowledge on childcare. Also I took the class to determine if I want to pursue a career in childcare so I would know what colleges to go to and what programs I would need to pursue. The initial goals I had before starting the class were to complete the class, to expand my knowledge and to decide whether or not to pursue childcare as a career.…

However, according to Sally Brown, volunteering brings these groups together and unites communities through bonding and “mutual understanding” (qtd. in Dykhuis 16). In fact, Pappas states that many youth volunteers get started in service work through church or school. Consequently, these closely knit programs encourage friendship and address areas of each community’s concern (Dykhuis 16). This allows communities to come together through a similar cause whether that be “illiteracy, teen pregnancy, high crime rates, or drug abuse” (Spiegel and Safrit 14). Due to the different opportunities for community service, volunteers are able to understand the barriers between affluent and limited resource areas and use their knowledge of these barriers for further personal and communal…

In general, most teenagers are hard to persuade about topics like improving schools and communities. “50 percent of students surveyed before participating in a service learning course believed they had a good understanding of the needs and problems facing the Rochester area.” After participating in service learning, the number rose to seventy-five percent. College used to be a place that would produce better citizens. Now the primary focus has turned to getting ready for professional careers. If improving society and our communities does not get taught in college, then we will have missed the original purpose for college itself. Students that participate in service learning classes…

When the semester began I had concerns about how much supervision time I would receive since my supervisor splits her time between four different agencies in the metropolitan area. Now that I have been at the agency over a month and had time to settle in at the agency, and has some supervision time with Marcela even she has expressed the importance of supervision. As Metropolitan State University of Denver requires as an intern we must receive a minimum of 1 hour of face to face supervision per week. Marcela made a comment on the importance of supervision and an hour a week is actually quite low as far as supervision goes. Even though Marcela is only at the Brighton location on Wednesday’s to give me supervision face to face, her office is always open to me or anyone else that needs to have time with her. She is always available to give me the one on one time that I need with her.…
