E.E. Cummings invites readers to “put yourself in someone else’s shoes” in his 1963 poem, Me up at does. Though short and, when evaluated according to traditional English sentence structure, “grammatically incorrect,” the poem exhibits the same basic elements found within any other form of poetry. Included in these elements is a speaker who narrates the poetry to the audience; the author’s unique selection of words, otherwise known as diction; an original use of syntax; the inclusion of various forms of figurative language; the incorporation symbols and allegorical elements into the poem; the use of symbolism requiring an imagination of each individual reader; and, of course, an underlying theme, which this author leaves to our own interpretation. This seemingly-simple poem actually provides a variety of themes for exploration in seeking to determine the author’s overall meaning behind the composition of E.E. Cummings’s Me up at does.…

Identity is the qualities or beliefs that make a particular person or group different from others. It’s a form of self discovery. When we find who we are, we can be happy, we accept ourselves, even though others may not. In the novels, Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen, and Autobiography of a Face, by Lucy Grealy, the main characters Jacob and Lucy both have identity issues. In Water for Elephants, Jacob has to learn to accept himself as an elder. Additionally, in Autobiography of a face, Lucy grew up with facial cancer and a disfigured face making it hard for her to be accepted in society. Both characters from both novels had to endure challenges to identify who they were as a person.…

What is the "Good Life"? There are many different interpretations of what the "good life" truly is. Individualists believe that the "good life" is pleasing oneself; while utilitarians believe that the "good life" is acting for the good of the rest of society and others. Philosophers also have their own interpretations. One philosopher that has his own interpretation is Plato in the Symposium.
