Maya Angelou was an amazing author, poet, and actress. She has written many amazing pieces from poems to broadway productions. She was greatly influenced by her childhood. Her pieces were influenced by the civil rights movement. All in all, Angelou was a phenomenal writer.
April 4, 1928, Maya Angelou was born in St. Louis Missouri. Growing up for her was very difficult. Her mom and dad split up when Maya was at a young age. Therefore, Maya and her brother, Bailey, were sent to live with their grandmother, Anne Henderson, in Stamps, Arkansas. This piece was written in 1978, which was during the time that blacks were being racially “persecuted”. They were humiliated. Angelou wrote this this to anyone willing to read it and possibly the white people during 1978. She wrote Still I Rise, because she was trying to show that she can be strong through everything she has been through. The poem addresses how whites might have seen the blacks in this time period. It is highly political and highly personal. The theme of Still I rise, is mainly about resilience and determination when forcing oppression. This theme generally talks about the historical oppression of African Americans. This poem offers many intriguing tones such as; playful, defiant, comical, angry, self assured, and bitter. Ultimately it is triumphant. The poem structure is it is sort of a lyric poem. It has a rhyme scheme in the first stanza is abcb.
